So I looked up reviews of the profs I'll have this year on ratemyprof and some of the comments really scared me.. some of my profs got awesome ratings and others had absolutely TERRIBLE ones and awful comments too. Should I consider dropping these courses since the profs are apparently so bad?
It actually wouldn't hurt to go to the first lecture to see what impression you get. Sometimes the ratings are really accurate and sometimes they aren't. You'll likely learn enough about the prof from the first lecture to make a decision :)

I really want to like this class...
I've had Professor Cooper for Children's Literature, Fantasy and now for Mystery Novel... Up until now she has proven herself to be a woman of impeccable taste in fiction. In each of these classes she has assigned at least one Terry Pratchett novel and also tends to include tons of Tolkien. Maybe I just don't really enjoy the Mystery genre, because I have hated everything she has assigned for this class so far. I am likely going to skip to the Pratchett novel because it has to be better than this junk.
My math teacher got a 4.9 out of 5 on ratemyprofessor based on 210 ratings. Wow, right? I thought he seemed like a good teacher based on the first class but didn't jump to any conclusions. Now I'm convinced. 210 students don't lie.
Considering math is the most difficult subject for me I really need a good teacher.
is there a site where we can look up what past students thought of courses they took, like ratemyprofs for courses? i'm choosing an elective and I would really like to know what the classes are like for psyc 208 and eosc 114 and anthropology
Ratemyprof is the only one I know, but I've ended up on random Vancouver-based forums where people talk about courses they've taken at various schools. If you google something like "UBC EOSC 114", you'll most likely end up finding some threads with people discussing courses (the one I usually go on is Mallvibes).

This is from ratemyprof in 2010 for my biochem II lecture prof...the japanese guy: "It's really though for we American to have a grasp of his English. He should be confined to his research!" The part that is funny is the second sentence. LOL BUT I had no problem understanding him..."oxoacetate"
Steps to Deciding Between Two Courses in the Same Time Slot:
STEP 1: Go to RateMyProf and check out the profs. No matter how interesting a course is, if you have a shitty prof, it's not worth it.
<Choose the course with the higher rated prof>
<if both profs pass RateMyProf test, move onto STEP 2>
STEP 2: Google the course syllabus for both courses; gather as much info on the subject matter as humanly possible. Figure out which course would serve me better academically as well as personally.
