Now that you're working, what are the best and worst parts about working in cpsc? Can you talk about what your job is like in general? From someone who's curious about the field but has no experience whatsoever with coding :)
As a Software Developer at a local tech company, I use a variety of technologies to develop web applications for use by other companies. I spend 1/3rd of my time programming, 1/3rd debugging and trying to figure out whatâs wrong and 1/3rd in meetings, planning what to do and doing technical design.Â
The pay is pretty decent for someone my age living in Vancouver
Very collaborative environment: Youâre rarely working on your own, our company Slack workspace is full of different channels, and my teamâs channels are very active with people asking for help and feedback, making comments, sharing knowledge etc. This is really different from the stereotype of âhackersâ doing things on their computers by themselves
Flexible working hours, but this varies from company to companyÂ
There are always new technologies and frameworks to learn and try, so things never get boring
Everyone I work with and meet around the company is very smart, with backgrounds in a ton of different fields
Typical business solutions arenât the most exciting things in the world, most people wonât be working at giants like Google or Microsoft
You can spend a lot of time getting stuck on one problem and it can frustrating, you definitely need to have a lot of patienceÂ
Diversity can be an issue at some companies and within teams; Iâm lucky Iâm not the only female developer on my team, itâs nice to have someone I can chat with and do things with
Computer Science and the tech industry in general is getting really competitive now, due to the pros I mentioned above. For example, UBCâs program is over-crowded with more and more people wanting to enter it. Even as a smaller, local company, we can still get close to 100 applications for one job posting.Â
The pay in Vancouver canât match what you can get elsewhere, especially in the States. So if you are looking for a really high-paying position in tech, youâll want to relocate. Otherwise, there are other careers here in Vancouver that pay the same amount or more.Â
It can be hard to make time trying to learn new things on your own, when youâre tired from a 8-9 hour work day
