she and ataqo are brother and sister, apart by roughly 2 years

they grew up on their home planet, nar shadda, with their entire clan (parents, uncle and aunt, grandparents etc)

I have a headcanon that mirialan have family tattoos that change design slightly with every new generation, the children’s tattoos being a combiantion of both parents tattoo designs

mayal and ataqo have the same “base” family tattoo but on different locations, he has it on his shoulder and she has it on her wrist. Ataqo added onto it, for example family losses, or other events that shaped his feelings and ties to his family, like... losing your force-sensitie sister at age 12, that was abducted by a sith in need of an apprentice 😶

mayal’s first sith master was a huge dick, he abused her mentally and mistreated her constantly. he kept shocking her with force lightning, so strong and frequently, that it caused severe memory loss

It’s permanent memory loss, she forgot most of her childhood and family. However, she will experience some sort of ‘deja-vu’ where she remembers smells or sounds that she had heard when she was a child, but she can’t place them

when she was 19, her former sith master got in trouble with darth vrupet for butchering an important imperial mission, who in turn killed him and took over. mayal was his only apprentice, and vrupet saw how mistreated and neglected she was, so she took her in in a matter of seconds.

with vrupets help, mayal received professional help processing and working through what had happened, and received proper training in the force

She also found great solace and support in Kai’vii, who had been with Vrupet by then for years already. It took Mayal time to fully learn to socialize again, but both Vrupet and Kai’vii were patient and supportive and let Mayal do things at her speed

as a juggernaut, mayal uses her saber along with her force abilities in combat interchangeably

She honored Vrupet and everything she’s done for Mayal with a tattoo, its the one at the chin. the one at the eyes is for her memory loss, also an addition she made after she was taken in by vrupet

She also has a tattoo for Kai’vii & Xoxai on her sternum, which she made after Xoxai joined the group years later

HERE IS WHERE THNGS WILL GET INTERESTING. Rylen, Vrupets right hand agent that, meanwhile, is in a relationship with Ataqo, will recognize Mayal’s wrist tattoo as to being similar to Ataqos shoulder tattoo.

He’ll ask Ataqo about it, Ataqo tells him about the family tattoo, tells him about his missing sister, Rylen connects the dots. Makes them meet. :)
