what do you think of "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down for J? π
Based on the title alone, I was starting to nod to myself, but then I checked the lyrics and... π. It's perfect for them on multiple levels.
But all the miles that separate
They disappear now when I'm dreaming of your face
I'm here without you, baby, but you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you, baby, and I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you, baby, but you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight, it's only you and me, yeah
The yearning J has felt for the Returning Visitor for years, at this point, still persists in the current TFS timeline, and this song conveys it in a beautifully wistful-sense.
At the start, the lines about 'lies making them colder' and how the 'time without you has made them older' (mature/less naive, imo) also tracks since J learned how to guard their heart and became reserved instead of being the quiet childhood friend you knew. There is a lot about their time in Fernweh while you weren't able to be by their side that you don't know about yet. We'll be discovering that throughout the series, many reveals and twists. π The dream aspect is angsty for J who works very long hours and sleeps fitfully, so dreaming of you could be something they have mixed feelings on. The self-projected comfort vs. inevitably waking up and you being nowhere in town that would make the ache of missing you and worrying about if you're okay that much more acute.
Plus, there's ???, so.... π₯²
Thank you for sharing this song choice for them! π
He misses you too, Anon, and has for a while now. π₯Ή
Today is J. Corvin's birthday! π In honor of it, you'll find character sketches of James below, though there are more pictures: here! This gorgeous collection of art is by Three. I love that there's a wistful longing to his gaze! I wonder what (or whom) he's thinking about?
Here's a scene for J-mancers from TFS: Book Two. Both are versions below!
James
. . .
A solid connection of something against metal disrupts the collective pause and wrenches free a measly squeak.
It takes everyone by surprise.
Instantly, you're moving before your mind can fully quantify James staggering only a fraction of a step, mere inches at best. You reach out before Reese, who was much closer, can. He shoots a knowing look your way that's tinged with unabashed respect. You rest your palm on James's upper back in what's hopefully a steadying motion despite how you're wrinkling his ironed shirt from alarm.
He doesn't shrug off your touch, leaning in as if recognizing who it belongs to before turning around. James clasps your hand mid-turn to prevent your frozen palm from inadvertently resting on his chest. You're a little intense after waiting for his late arrival tonight and from watching that video tape, your fingers catching in cotton instead of letting go as they normally would. He makes up for that by very delicately releasing yours.
*page_break
You locate what's wrong in seconds.
Peeking out behind James and Reese, there's a water fountain that's fit for a grand museum. It blends into the surroundings thanks to its ebony, wrought iron trim, no speck of dull plastic or loud chrome to pull people's focus. James must have caught his sideβpart of his hipβon where it juts out into the hall.
That will leave behind a bruise.
"Detective?"
"Didn't see it there," James mutters. He overlooks the range of attention he's receiving to adopt a kneel. He puts weight on the fountain's curve to test its mounted hinge. "It's okay."
"They can swallow their spit," you dismiss his diligence while mildly perturbed. He's way more important! "Do you think we're worried about a fountain?"
"Besides, they have many others," Reese adds. "Soda is 'all the rage'."
"Wait, why'd you say it like that?"
"I do not particularly care for fizz," Reese explains to Becca. "Champagne is an exception due to my preferred decanting method."
"Why do"
You completely tune out Becca and Reese's conversation about carbonated drinks, stepping around to where James is shining a light on the wall mount. From the corner of his eye, he must spy you, setting his jaw so a jawline you've often traced stands out further. Is he embarrassed? It was a hard smack; the fountain is encased in metal after all.
*page_break
"Are you okay?" you whisper.
"Yes, thank you."
His flashlight's illumination is mostly absorbed by the underside of the machine, throwing faint shadows over his expression that's reserved. When you lean in out of childhood habit, the same one that had you walking faster once there was a slim possibility he was hurt, James inhales. It's hushed to your ears, a tentative breath that will easily be stolen once he witnesses something beautiful, one of preparation. Despite the years in between, you recognize it from marveling at stars together in the tree house. He never tired of them.
Thinking back on what happened, didn't James's head turn before the collision
Where was he looking?
You soon find the answer in intense green eyes you should've known your whole life.
They're the same ones that regarded you gently after your first kiss that's a nostalgic memory compared to your new reality.

Jane
. . .
A solid connection of something against metal disrupts the collective pause and wrenches free a measly squeak.
It takes everyone by surprise.
Instantly, you're moving before your mind can fully quantify Jane staggering only a fraction of a step, mere inches at best. You reach out before Ruby, who was much closer, can. She shoots a knowing look your way that's tinged with unabashed respect. You rest your palm on Jane's upper back in what's hopefully a steadying motion despite how you're wrinkling her ironed shirt from alarm.

Is there 0% chance that we could romance A? Or at least have a fling? Ugh, I'm a sucker for the kind of relationship I set for my MC and A (admired X admirer)
Hi Anon!
I hope you're doing well. π
I wouldn't say it's a 0% chance. π I've received many asks/comments about A. Corvin or a potential romance. I adore writing them--their carefree nature and smitten yet somehow still smooth af flirting. A's enamored crush on your Returning Visitor is alive and well in Book Two, giving rise to unique scenes with them and other characters/the ROs.
I'm happy you enjoy the idolized + crush combination!
If anything develops further between you remains to be seen. π
It's something I've pondered, even receiving your ask prompted me to go peek ahead in Book Two's outline to confirm an upcoming section that's A centric. Like Mal, they aren't currently a member of the Fernweh gang, which is a lesser plot point and conflict for J (π₯²), so it would be an interesting, more off the beaten path romance of them seeking you out and you feeling admired/wanted by them. There's a story split in Book Three that makes this tricky. I'll think on it more.
I'm excited for you spend time with our dollop of sunshine! π

i wish we could be an animal whisperer, kinda like a princess thing from disney, lol. so far i've befriended the dog and spared the baby deer, and i'm really excited to meet R's cat (although if the little kitten is any like their owner, i have my doubts about us becoming friends anytime soon...)
Perhaps, there could be something like that in store for you, Anon. β¨
A wish is a dream your heart makes, so I encourage you to believe (and also make choices that show kindness to Fernweh's fauna, possibly its flora too, even if we know how that ended in Book One. >.>) I'm happy you've enjoyed befriending the animals you've encountered thus far in the series. R's cat comes up in Book Two alongside A's, hmm, 'less traditional' pet whom you'll be meeting when visiting J's parents. In both cases, there are sweet, teasing, and fun scenes alongside more neutral ones before we round it out with those that are impolite/cruel.
While there is a range, I bet you'll leave a positive impression! π₯°
Much like their owner, R's cat is finicky and carries himself with pride, but his mischief is often well-meaning. (The cat can help trigger a few romance moments. Alternatively, it may feel like he's judging your choices in relation to his owner if you're being harmful/messy. He is an intelligent cat.) πThere can be cute scenes between him and your RV!
There's also an achievement at some point in the series that relates to your ask's wording. Hopefully, you'll trigger it. If not, I'll be here to help.
Best wishes! π
Bonus: There is an upcoming one called: 'Curiosity Killed the Cat'. The names/text for TFS's achievements often have a ??? tone to them.
Oh man and doves are monogamous!!!! I'm rereading the Mal asks and posts and going Galaxy brain over here mannn
The dots you're connecting, Anon!ππποΈ
The 'mate for life' aspect for Mal is heartbreakingly crucial in a way you'll discover throughout the series alongside other symbolism!
Doves are devoted, often found in pairs and represent a lasting love, if not an everlasting one. (Depending on what you read and your own romanticism, there's more strategy to this than emotion, lol, but I promise there are ~reasons~ for this association.) There is a scene at the end of Book Two where this 'dove link' is brought up by someone who knows Mal personally! It varies based on your dynamic with Mal + other choices. I'm excited for you to read it for that a-ha feeling! π―
(I'm realizing that this ask likely relates either to the alpha or a Mal POV, so if anyone's confused, no worries. It'll come up.)
got my first ever official customer complaint because when i was going over the terms of their life insurance they were like "well i don't plan to die" and i was like "well you're going to"
