He needed to see the light leave Optimus’s optics to know he’d truly won.

That blue, sombering gaze….

The way it crinkled under Megatron’s jabbing insults. A quiet furrow of the brow and downturn of the lips, almost a pout.

They used to crinkle just like that when they read by the windowsill.

He could almost see them.

That lean red and blue mech curled up in a pile of pillows, overlooking a crystal clear view of Iacon stories beneath them. A city glittering in golden windows and trailing smoke that sent the stars blurring in shimmering swirls.

Megatron had found him like that for hours at a time some days. The mech would occasionally shift from neatly sitting, to being folded up like a gargoyle with his knees to his chin, before slowly sinking into a slow eyed, tired blink as they curled up amongst the sheets of their little nest.

But as long as they were awake, they always found the strength to smile ‘hello’ for Megatron, as warm as the first day they’d met.

He wondered if Optimus looked at the Autobots as warmly as he used to look at him. If that smile still lit up a room like the morning light in a darkened cave.

No.

He didn’t dare think of it.

He refused to.

He wouldn’t picture them lying dying in their berth. The way their faceplate would be cracking in muddied greens, their chest straining to lift for so much as a single breath in. And he wouldn’t picture the way that little archivist would have still forced on a smile for him. Because if anyone would be worrying for others sake while on their deathbed, it would be Optimus.

It would be his Orion Pax.

This is an excerpt from Chapter 2 of my long fic ‘Virus of the Spark’, featuring Ratchet X Optimus and past Orion Pax X Megatronus drama!

The story is a gayer, angstier rewrite of episode 13 of season 1 called ‘Sick Mind’. Exploring the histories of Optimus, Ratchet, and Megatron as the Autobots search through the Decepticon warlords twisted helm….
