Garden progress 🪴 🍇
I spent a while today and yesterday pulling weeds and root systems out of the garden beds. Holy crap. So much weeding needs to be done. Though I have to say, there’s something very rejuvenating about sitting and playing in the dirt. Today while I was out in the garden, I listened to an Armchair Expert podcast episode with Susan David, a psychologist who discussed emotional agility among other related topics. It was a great listen.
Excitingly, 6 of the 8 grape vine plants have started budding and 1 of my raspberry plants has grown leaves. I can’t wait to be able to walk out back and pick berries. I hope the other 2 raspberry plants start to show some signs of growth soon too.

Tips on Growing Raspberries
Rooting for Raspberries - The original raspberries weren’t rude noises made by booing boors, but succulent summer fruits. We will concentrate on the summer-bearing varieties, which produce one large crop in June or July. Set out bare-root raspberry plants in early spring, about six weeks before your last frost. Choose a location that has full sun and well-drained soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Avoid areas where other berries, nightshade-family crops, or roses have grown—and make sure that wild berry bushes will keep their distance. (Preferably a minimum 1,000 feet of distance!) The site also should offer good air circulation, protection from wind, and at least 1 inch of rain or irrigation per week. Check for raspberry plants for sale to obtain organic fruit.

Raspberry 'Autumn Bliss'
PLANTED ROW NEAREST THE CONIFER TREE
A truly exceptional variety!
Without a doubt, one of the best and most reliable autumn fruiting varieties. Bliss is a heavy cropper from late August through until the first frosts with the highest yield coming in September.
The attractive berries are large with a firm texture, and the flavour is excellent. The fruit is mid-dark red in colour and has good keeping qualities. The short, erect, spiny cane are sturdy and need only minimal support.
Bliss has good disease resistance to Root Rot. Primocane variety – produces fruit on the first years growth.
An excellent British bred variety – very highly recommended.
Cropping season: late August-mid October. Self fertile.
Fruit is produced on the current seasons cane.
Cut all canes to ground level in the winter.
Remove unwanted canes in the Spring.
Height: 150cm (59”). Spread: 50cm (20”).
How do I get a second crop of raspberries?
Cut these just harvested canes down to the ground. Do not prune back new canes that have emerged during the summer. After the old, fruit-bearing canes have been cut back, train the new canes to a post or to one or two horizontal wires. These canes will produce a crop next year.
