I might've missed it, but did anyone beyond Colleen, Claire, Jessica, Luke, Danny, and Misty witness Matt-as-Daredevil at Midland Circle? Before Defenders, it sounded like the public thought Daredevil was dead or retired, so its possible no one could connect the 'death' of DD at Midland, and the disappearance of Matt before the Midland collapse. Do you think the others came up with some sort of story how Matt got separated from them before reaching Midland, just to keep Matt and DD apart?
That’s a really good point– Matt had already been inactive as DD for a while pre-Defenders. But there were a few chances for people to catch him in action later. It’s tough to tell if there were any witnesses to the fight in the restaurant in Episode 5 (when Matt and Jessica rescue Trish), but it’s possible someone could have caught a glimpse of him there. At the very least, someone must have seen him strolling around town in Episode 7. NYC is full of people at night. There’s no way to be subtle about something like this.Â
(We always laugh about the framing of this shot, which makes it look like Matt stripped down and changed in the middle of the street. Which, for the record, is something comics Matt has done…)
Thus, the public may have had some confirmation that DD was still around prior to the explosion– though of course, they could easily interpret his “death” as just another period of inactivity, and nothing to be concerned about. And yes, it’s likely that his friends all came up with some explanation for Matt’s pre-death disappearance (if only to avoid being charged with murder)… but if someone did see DD power-walking around with Jessica and Luke in the scene above, we think that would still raise a whole bunch of uncomfortable questions for everyone involved. Â
Essentially, all of the circumstances surrounding Matt’s death are vague. There’s no way someone official found his body in the rubble, because he was wearing his DD costume, and his secret identity would have been blown right then and there. So how does anyone outside of his inner circle know he’s dead? Did everyone lie about how he died? Because if they say he was killed in the Midland Circle explosion, that makes Luke and Jessica– his “kidnappers”– look responsible. Was his death kept secret? Maybe the funeral was a private one. Does the world at large (the NYPD, his clients, etc.) think he’s… missing? Still alive? This is a messy situation that extends beyond secret identity issues, and we’re eager to see how it’s handled. Â
