I still can't believe this is marble, even after staring at it for almost two hours. Bernini was such a genius! This piece is an excellent example of perfection. The strong contract of a muscular male body vs the soft/delicate female body; the lust on his face vs her desperate cry. Everything was so well thought out and carefully executed, from the softness of the skin to the veins underneath a working muscle; from the movement of the tears due to the struggle, to the swirls in the fabrics (they are so thin that light can shine thru). Bernini's Rape of Proserpina. I was in tears. This is my ultimate favourite sculpture! Can't believe I finally get to see it in person after admiring over textbooks and pictures for so many years. The details, movements, tensions, and emotions of this piece is truly overwhelming. I was sweating, crying, and shaking the entire time!! What an amazing experience!
