The Tide is High: A Conversation With Meko $upreme Photo Credit: Tyler Moncrief Essential Tracks: Chubby God 4am Uncle Phil Thank You October, the third installment of Meko $upremes “October” series is a great look into the inner workings of the 24 year old rappers mind. His infectious flow serves as perfect guide as he displays charisma, wit, and honesty all paired with lyrical dexterity. On “Trust”, Meko lets off a stinging yet slick shot at his detractors: “Broke niggas the ones who have a lot to say/Man they don’t want me to operate/ I bet they just want me to stop the pace/ Get them squares up out your circle boy you out of shape”. Sharp enough to make you question yourself, but smooth enough to make you crack a smile even at the height of your hate. I think that sums up this project as a whole. From start to the finish Meko develops and maintains a steady, airy aesthetic. Using the drawl of his thick tongued delivery to spread across each track blending both worlds almost perfectly. The feeling is sipping syrup from a champagne glass. It draws you into a relaxed state while still being able to fully connect with the high points. Great mood music. As I see it, $upreme is definitely the wave. We caught up with him to chat about the project. I caught up with Meko to discuss the project. C.IV: So one of the main things I noticed about the project is that it has a very consistent soundscape. What’s your thought process behind picking beats? Meko $upreme: My thought process was putting together something cohesive that flowed together so you wouldn’t want to skip any song. C.IV: I can really see that. For example “Drowning” falls at a perfect place on the album. It gives a quick look at a more dark outlook on life without slowing the pace or dampening the mood. Did you feel it was important to put on display that ALOT of people our age have these moments? Or just something you wanted to get off for you? M$: Drowning was made at a hard time in my life I was lost, confused, and honestly ready to give up. It was more for me but for others who could relate. C.IV: Something else that’s apparent on the project is R&B samples. Would you say R&B influences your creative process? M$: I Iove R&B and sometimes I tend to write R&B songs or just create melodies. One day I’ll release some. C.IV: The R&B songs that you do write, how would you describe them? The Weeknd and PARTYNEXTDOOR? Or Tyrese and Tank? I mean, I have a guess but I wanna hear your take. M$: I would say neither but if I had to choose it would Be PND but in my own way, you feel me? C.IV: I hear that. What would you say was the main point you wanted to get across with Thank You October? M$: My main point was to reach an bigger audience. It’s only been out a few days and I love the feedback so far. Everything else is a plus. C.IV: You also have a very distinctive animated voice, was there a point where you realized that was a big addition to your music? Or was that something that didn’t really register to you? M$: As far as my voice or sound, I didn’t know people thought it was different. That’s just who I am I guess C.IV: Okay, well instead of asking top 5 MCs, I like to ask your top 5 favorite albums. It gives more insight to who you are. What are yours? M$: Top 5 Jay Z – Blueprint 3 . Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp A Butterfly, Drake – Take Care, PARTYNEXTDOOR – PARTYNEXTDOORTWO, Bryson Tiller – Trap Soul. It changes all the time, though. C.IV: Without giving away your master plan. What are some goals that you have for yourself? musically, business wise etc M$: Some goals are to bring a light to my city to showcase other talent here, and to continue to make music people can fall in love with or just vibe to. C.IV: I’ll speak for the people when I say we can definitely vibe with the music. It’s almost like a direct connection with you. I feel like if I found your phone, I’d see “4am” I’m a text conversation [laughs] True or not? M$: [Laughs] Very true that album is me everything I said is true want to give off my personality, I’m a silly dude. C.IV: I just wanna say they Sect25 supports you 100% and I’m grateful you gave us the opportunity to sit with you. Anything you want to say? M$: Appreciate it man, I’ll just say keep supporting I’ll keep providing waves. Catch the tide and stream Thank You October here: https://soundcloud.com/mekosupreme/sets/thank-you-october
