longest English sentence using the same word
Today I found out that “Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo” is a completely valid English sentence!
It is an antanaclasic, which means it uses the same word but for its different definitions.
“Buffalo” can mean the place with that name, the animal, the plural of the animal, an expert on a particular topic and the verb meaning ‘to bully’.
So the sentence above means (in order) that “Buffalo buffalo” [the animals from a place called Buffalo] “Buffalo buffalo buffalo” [(whom) others of the same animal bully] “buffalo Buffalo buffalo” [(then) bully others of the same animal from the same place].
Compare the sentence to “Local animals local animals bully bully local animals.”
Try reading it again and see if it makes sense. It’s quite a silly sentence, but it makes sense and it’s perfectly valid.
