summary: general headcanons about the world of teyvat and, by extension, the gods that rule it.

warnings: spoilers for sumeru’s, fontaine’s and natlan’s archon quest.

inspired by @oliveden ‘s archon headcanons.

visions are strongest in the realm dominated by its element — geo visions will be stronger in liyue, dendro in sumeru, etc. the amount the vision’s power increases is dependent on how in tune the vision wielder is with their element.

mondstadt is the youngest of the seven nations. snezhnaya used to border liyue, and a harsh mountain pass divided the two nations. it was only after the massacre that was the archon war that the new cryo archon ceded the mountainous south in favor of retreating farther up north. with his newfound power, barbatos clumsily hand carved the jagged cliffs and sharp valleys that’s now known as mondstadt for the snezhnayans left abandoned by their former god. dragonspine stands as a reminder of what their home used to be before barbatos graciously gave them freedom.

all of sumeru used to be harsh desert. it’s no secret that rukkhadevata created the lush, fruitful jungles that most sumerans call home out of a barren wasteland, and it is because of the new dendro archon — nahida — that the jungle continues to flourish. flowers bloom in the wake of her footfalls and new forests sprout with a wave of her hand, its health inherently tied with her livelihood. should the dendro archon die and not reincarnate, appoint a successor, or relinquish their domain to irminsul, the vibrant and forested east of sumeru will wither and rot, the western sands reclaiming its old territory as nature returns to equilibrium.

the tsaritsa’s anguish hardened into bitterness, and bitterness into apathy. in turn, the pleasant and fertile rolling hills and gentle peaks of snezhnaya hardened and froze over, soft grass and fields of wildflowers being replaced with permafrost and tundra. much of modern snezhnaya is considered inhospitable and now lies above the arctic circle. only those with cryo visions are able to withstand its subzero temperatures and biting winds for extended periods of time, and one can find small pockets of life dotted throughout the glaciers and ice sheets — communities comprised entirely of cryo vision wielders and their kin.

i imagine snezhnaya’s music to sound similar to tennen composed by hania rani (listen to it here).

the archons are bound by their gnosis to their domain and thus physically unable to leave the borders of their nation. the capital city of each region in teyvat is rife with embassies and carefully selected diplomats to carry out international relations and their god’s wills.

natlanians are unable to leave their homelands for extended periods. phlogiston, being in the air and earth of natlan, has become a vital source of life alongside food and water. anyone born and raised in the nation of fire and war will quickly become dependent on the substance to live, and should a natlan native find themselves elsewhere in teyvat for too long, they will experience increasingly worsening fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, dehydration, dizziness, and hallucinations, which can lead to organ failure among other conditions. to avoid this fate, those who wish to travel must plan in advance and pack phlogiston inhalers, but the devices are only a temporary solution and cannot sustain someone for longer than a week or two at a time.

the pyro archon rises and lowers the sun and the geo archon the moon each and every day. akin to the circadian rhythm, they possess an internal clock that tells them when to perform this duty. during periods of war where even the pyro archon can’t afford to leave the battlefield, citizens of teyvat have recorded the phenomena of night or day lasting weeks at a time all while the moon completes its usual cycle. the longest period the daylight cycle remained unbalanced was during the archon war where it seemed as if even the sun and moon were fighting for dominion over the sky.

the anemo archon controls the winds and air itself and the hydro archon controls condensation and precipitation across teyvat. after the hydro archon’s death, this responsibility fell to neuvillette, who at first maintained a very rigid schedule and didn’t think twice about it before he read a bewildered meteorologist’s column in the steambird that remarked how it always rained for exactly five hours on tuesdays and fridays. he still struggles with creating the same level of spontaneity and diversity in weather that foçalors seemed to effortlessly have, but he’s noticed that the ability seems tied to his emotional state… it’s always overcast after a particularly troubling court case.

thunder and lightning storms occur when the electro archon wakes up on the wrong side of the bed.

rex lapis bleeds liquid gold, and there’s whispers of a band of hunters solely dedicated to profiting off this myth.

every nation has its own distinct language, but after the fall of khaenri’ah, its language was adopted as the lingua franca in order to keep part of it tangible and alive.

the pyro archon once targeted celestia with pillars of rock in the geo archon’s fashion, but missed. the displaced earth trail behind celestia’s orbit, almost mockingly, but a very keen eye observing from the right location and time of day will notice that behind celestia, it almost looks like a piece of the sky is missing.

Ayaka: In Ayaka's younger life, specifically late childhood to mid teenage years. She had really bad acne and would get insecure with how pretty and flawless Ayato's face is. Meanwhile, she's stuck rubbing whatever ointment she can find all over her face. Luckily, it went away after some time

Ayato: Whenever Ayato has a hard time sleeping or can't focus on his paperwork anymore. He'll sneak out near a cliff and watch the ocean. The calm breeze, along with the soft crashing of waves, makes him remember that he needs to breathe once in a while

Gorou: Obviously, it's known that Gorou is part dog and has been out to war, and most of the time, you get hit during battles or even terribly injured. In Gorou's case, one of his canines broke off while in the middle of a battle. Unfortunately, dogs canines can't grow back unless they're puppies, so now Gorou only has one canine left

Heizou: To pass by the time of being unable to solve a mystery, Heizou has picked up a hobby of wood carvings, specifically making them into cute animals like deer, foxes, birds, or even rabbits. Occasionally, he will make little figures of people that he knows, like Shinobu, Itto, or even Sara

Itto: Since it is canon that Itto paints over his horns to make them look colorful and bright, he doesn't just decorate his horns with paint. He also uses stickers, bows, and anything else he could wear on them! Although, most of the time, when he wears bows, they snap due to the horns being way too sharp or thick. He feels terrible every time that happens

Kazuha: For a moment of Kazuha's life, he had a very bad lisp. Which was awful for him since he is a very poetic man, so every time he stuttered in his wording, his mind would immediately crash, and he would forget everything he was going to say, stuttering like a maniac. The only one that helped him with his lisp was Beidou, who did laugh the first couple of times but apologized and helped him get back his composure

Kirara: If you had to ask Kirara what her least favorite place to visit for work is, it would definitely be Sumeru. The reason being the sand, she always gets sand in between her bean paws and, afterward, has to scrub it out once she leaves

Kokomi: Since I also hc Kokomi with pretty bad eyebags (due to the war, the vision degree, being a leader, ect), she normally uses concealer to hide them/get rid of them. After all, she doesn't want to get bombarded with questions on how she got them or people suggesting she heads to bed. She has way too many responsibilities to deal with!

Raiden: The reason why Raiden loves sweets so much is because she can not stand citrus fruits/flavors. She's okay with spicy foods, savory, and even occasionally salty foods, but citrus? She absolutely hates

Sara: In secret, Sara is actually really good at creating statues and even made the large statue of Raiden placed right in the middle of Inazuma. Of course, she never tells anyone since it's her secret

Sayu: Whenever Sayu is about to fall asleep, she'll try as hard as she can to sleep on the floor. People have no clue why she does, and whenever they ask, she just says that it's better

Shinobu: The reason why Shinobu wears a mask all the time is because she has facial dysmorphia, which means that Shinobu fully thinks that she's ugly. The only people who have seen her face are Itto (who she showed on purpose) and Heizou (who accidentally walked in on her dreading on how she looks)

Thoma: Thoma doesn't like alcohol one bit, not because he's a lightweight, but because he hates the taste of alcohol, but if you tell him to watch over your drink, he'll immediately stand guard

Yae Miko: Since Yae Miko is a kitsune and can turn into a fox. She can also communicate with them, and on multiple occasions, Ei will walk into Miko's shrine just to see a bunch of foxes gathered around her, sprinting off in fear when they see the newcomer (Ei)

Yoimiya: Since Yoimiya owns and puts on a lot of firework shows, she's very strict on being safe when using fireworks. On multiple occasions, she's had to put on little shows to make sure the kids stay safe when watching or setting fireworks off. It's tough, but if it makes sure everyone has a fun time and no one gets injured. She'll keep on doing it

I’m sorry this has been sitting in my inbox for so long.

This is adorable and yet I somehow never was satisfied with how I wrote it, but I think I finally got it.

Raiden and Fujin Meeting Baby Cassie for the first time!!!

Raiden is honored that he is chosen to be among the first to meet the newborn.

Fujin is freakin’ out though. He rarely gets to see earthrealmers up close, let alone the tiny ones. He just has more responsibilities away from civilization, despite him adoring humans.

Humans are already really tiny (compared to him at least, dude is a mountain of a man, even if he’s shorter than Raiden, He’s still stupid tall) so he just marvels at how small and fragile babies are.

Raiden maintains his composure outwardly for the most part, but internally he is panicking. She’s too cute and she adores him but dude has zero clue what to do. Raiden.exe has stopped working. Tiny human is adorable and he’s scared he’ll break her.

I personally headcanon that Cassie was a smaller newborn. Like, you’d think she was a premie. But she’s a little fighter like her dad and stubborn like her mom. Once you meet her, you’d forget she was so tiny.

With her being so small, Raiden can basically hold her in one hand. He doesn’t though. At first he’s really apprehensive to hold her, but when Johnny Cage insists, since he’s basically her god(grand)father (not in the way Jax is, but just literally). Raiden holds her like she’s the most fragile glass, and he’s just “Look at her wrong and I’ll electrocute your ass.”

Fujin did research on how to hold a baby beforehand (he is too excited, someone just give him a kid already. New fic idea..) but when he actually does it, well, he can’t handle the cuteness. He uses a gentle breeze to play with her tiny puff of hair and she giggles and Fujin just melts.

Fujin holds out one of his hands (Raiden panics briefly when Fujin doesn’t use two hands, but Fujin just adjusts to support her properly) and lets Cassie grasp at his hand. He’s surprised by her grip, considering she’s like, a month old at most.

Cassie is honestly just super grabby with anything she can get her little mitts on. Fujin’s braid briefly falls near her, and she immediately tugs on it. But it’s too cute to bother Fujin.

Both Fujin and Raiden love Cassie, they just show it differently. Fujin is very up-front about it, smiling at her and letting her play with his hands or his braid sometimes.

Raiden doesn’t really know how people normally express it, but it’s clear he’s very fond of Cassie with how protective he is of her. He even offers to watch Cassie on some occasions if Johnny and Sonya need a break. Although his idea of watching her involves literally watching over her and standing guard. Dude acts like a bodyguard for this baby.

HOW THEY CUDDLE~

🔥 Hanzo is a full-body CUDDLE MACHINE. Big spoon, little spoon, it doesn't matter to him, he just likes to be close to you.

🔥 In the winter, it's like having your own personal heater, but in the summer, it's a little unbearable at times. Hanzo will pout if you shove him away.

🔥 Hanzo has a lot of nightmares since his time in the Netherrealm; at times he is inconsolable until you take him in your arms and give him reassurance.

🔥 Hanzo is impossible to wake in the morning, and he will fight you tooth and nail over getting out of bed.

"Just...five more minutes. Come on, I'm the Grandmaster."

❄ Kuai likes his space- he also knows that he is literally cold to the touch, which isn't always favorable.

❄ That's not to say that Kuai doesn't ever cuddle! He's just sort of low-key about it. An arm slung over your shoulder here, a forehead touch there.

❄ Kuai is not one to admit when he's tired, so you might find yourself locked in the arms of a snoring grandmaster. Smack him awake and he will irritably say "I wasn't sleeping. I was merely resting my eyes."

❄ After an especially dangerous encounter for you or for him, he will hold you like his life depends on it, mumbling little praises into the nape of your neck and tell you how important you are to him.

"I could have lost you- I will never let that happen again. Never."

🍡 Jade is a very intimate person, and this translates to her physical touch as well. Expect lots of small tracing of your features and little compliments being showered over you.

🍡 Hair play QUEEN. Jade will run her fingers through your hair constantly while cuddling, and will even do it until you fall asleep.

🍡 Absolutely will not let you go if the two of you have been separated for a long period of time.

🍡 Is the master of sneaking out from under you to go make breakfast or get a glass of water.

⚡ Raiden is a god, and unlike his brother, he has not meddled much in human affairs. The first time you snuggle up next to him and rest your head on his shoulder, he's a little confused.

"Are you feeling unwell? Would you like to lie down?"

⚡ It takes some time to explain to him that physical touch and affection are important to you- but once he gets it, he goes all out.

⚡ May or may not consult Fujin for cuddle techniques, and of course the windy brother gladly obliges.

"And they...like this feeling of being smothered by a loved one?" "Quite a lot!"

5. Crying

You’re awesome! *Keanu pointing* Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! And yes, I can (well I hope I can, if this is bollocks then feel free to hate me).

A Romance with Raiden

This man is deeply romantic, because how else would he be? You are the very light of his existence and he wants you to know how much he loves you.

He’ll do flowers and chocolates if you want them, but he’ll also whisk you away to a mountain top to watch the first sun of the morning break through the thick clouds and warm you both up. A stroll through an orchard whilst a gentle breeze (provided by a hidden and chuckling Fujin, he loves seeing Raiden so happy, and if Raiden loves you, then so does Fujin) stirs the blossoms from the branches to swirl around you as if in a dream. This isn’t going to happen everyday, that would cheapen it, but whenever Raiden feels the moment is right (and he doesn’t stick to traditional dates such as Valentine’s or Birthdays), maybe you’re upset or you’ve shown yourself to be even more loveable, then he’ll let you know just how he feels.

It isn’t all rose petals and a swelling chorus. He loves to take you to places he’s discovered through his many years and travels. One of his favourite places in all the realms is a small Chinese market where the best tea you’ll ever taste is brewed by tiny old man with one tooth and skin so wizened and wrinkled he looks like a mummified apple long forgotten at the bottom of a barrel.

Raiden loves you to meet everyone he considers special in his life. First you’ll be introduced to Fujin who’ll tease you both mercilessly, but will congratulate you for “finally bringing a smile to that grumpy git’s face”. Next will be Liu Kang and Kung Lao, Raiden beaming as brightly as the proudest Father when you meet the pair. When you meet Bo’ Rai Cho it is for brief moments, Raiden’s eye narrowing to slits whenever the man offers you a drink, and despite his protests that “it is only tea, and they’re old enough to have a drink anyway, come on Raiden!”, you never actually get to drink whatever Bo’ Rai Cho offers you, Raiden always tidying it away with a pout and an eyeroll.

Raiden will try to get you to meet the Elder Gods, thankfully Fujin always appears in time to distract Raiden with pictures of teeny baby animals. Raiden loves teeny baby animals (don’t tell Johnny Cage, Raiden will never hear the end of it) and unless you’re falling down a well or his amulet is cracking (again), then Raiden will stop whatever he is doing so he can look at the picture.

(Raiden has a picture of a teeny piglet as his phone background and will sometimes look at it when he is fed up with “those exhausting humans, but not you my love!”).

Raiden doesn’t need to eat, but he can eat and does enjoy it, especially if he’s made the meal. He once surprised you when you came into the kitchen and he was chopping away at the salad, his back to you, wearing nothing but an apron, his magnificent bum on display. Luckily nothing was on the stove because you couldn’t resist that bum and you both ended up sweaty and completely naked on the kitchen floor. (Fujin had made Raiden watch ‘Flamin’ Hot’, a Johnny Cage film about an undercover detective (Detective Sebastian Flame, Johnny obviously chose the kharacter’s name himself) who has to become a chef in order to infiltrate the French mafia, with the most famous scene being Johnny cooking in just an apron, his magnificent bum on display. Raiden will never, ever admit to watching this film. Ever.)
