I can think of one big example to support your argument.

I remember my favorite childhood book series. Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, I’d be just as upset if they finally did a movie and a blonde haired blue eyed boy played Torak. Who is described as brown skinned with black hair and stormy grey eyes. I’d be upset because I wouldn’t of known it was Torak unless someone told me.

If I saw a trailer of a young brown skinned black haired middle school boy clad in animal fur’s and a dotted line on both his cheeks with a small scare that cut through on the left cheek. My inner 12year old self fangirl girl heart, would start racing. If a girl also clad in animal furs joined him who was pale with dark red hair and eyes as black as peat pools and blue black bars on her cheeks, I would start tearing up. Following her is a cute wolf puppy, I would start bawling. Because before the title was shown just the image of them was enough for me to know it was the characters I’d loved for years and got me into reading.

If Michelle Paver approved a blonde haired boy who looked like he be a part of the seal clan than someone who looked like her brown skinned protagonist. Then decided to attack her own fan’s because they naturally expected someone else who looked like her description of Torak, I’d be ticked off.
