   he hadnât told pietro where he was going. it wasnât that he didnât trust the kid, but more a cautionary measure -- if tony had been discovered by ross or his goons, he wanted pietro to have some level of plausible deniability. FRIDAY would have told him the instant something went wrong anyway --- giving the kid enough to chance to get himself the hell AWAY.Â
   as it turns out, none of tonyâs precautionary measures had been necessary. he had gotten both in and out of the raft undetected, with a lengthy conversation with the incarcerated captain in the middle. he swims a couple hundred miles underwater before surfacing, zooming back to new york at full speed. he can barely breathe for the rest of the flight, the geniusâ mind racing far faster than normal. by the time he drops into the compound and steps out of the suit heâs gone through their ENTIRE conversation in his head at least three times, and moved on to analysing every instance of communication heâs had with ross since heâd ANNOYED him in a bar back in 2010.Â
   heâs not entirely sure where the other members of his team are ( heâs sure FRIDAY could and would tell him in excruciating detail but it doesnât MATTER. theyâre not HERE. he can talk to them later. ) right now, tony is bursting with energy and anger and a desperate need to tell SOMEONE all of what heâs just uncovered. everything heâs just figured out.Â
   pietro is sat in the common area when tony strides into the room and the genius makes a beeline for him. âyou ever broken anyone out of prison during your criminal career?â he asks, not waiting for a greeting, too antsy to explain properly.Â

     âfunny. last time I gave my own answers, you told me I couldnât say that in public.â probably because his own answer involved a certain cuss word starting with F, that resulted in quite aMURMUR going through the flock of reporters, followed by a flood of angry mail from parents complaining about their kids hearing a hero cuss on national television. one word. just ONE. and Ross had slapped the metaphorical muzzle on Pietro. he knows he shouldnât bug Stark like that. more or less camp in his office, feet propped on the desk, idly throwing a stress ball and catching it again.
    thing is, the new system is BORING. thing is, they have a lot less to do since signing. thing is, Pietro doesnât handle boredom well. âjust so I get this right      youâre saying if I want to find my sister before HE does, Iâm on my own.â
   heâs not sure when he, tony stark, the guy who caused migraines for his own PR department every time he opened his mouth, had become the RESPONSIBLE one. ( maybe about the time all these KIDS had become superheroes, making him feel old. ) he sighs, flicking his holographic display so that it rearranges itself around pietroâs feet. less effort than shoving off the offending body parts. somehow tony has grown used to working around this kid and his tendency to try and annoy tony as much as possible.Â
   âofficially youâre on your own,â tony answers, rolling his eyes as he glances at pietro. câmon, did the kid really think he was just gonna accept rossâ word and leave it at that? ( maybe that was what steve had never understood --- tony could sign whatever they liked, make everything official and pretend to agree with all the red tape, but that didnât mean he wasnât still going to do his own thing. follow his own rules. it was the boundary line that tony had been balancing on his entire life. )
   âthe avengers arenât gonna search for the rogues. that doesnât mean that a private civilian, such as myself, or my girlfriend, canât help a young sokovian refugee search for his lost sister.âÂ

âyou should be on a high right now. you defeated death. mere mortals cannot do that.â

when they'd told him to report to the secondary gym he figured there was some sort of problem or some of the agents had gotten into a fight and they needed him to come break it up. he never expected to walk into the room and see it in its current state. then again maybe he should've expected it. ever since they'd returned from sokovia, it seemed as if wanda and pietro were having a difficult time adjusting to life in the avengers compound. steve had offered to help them whenever they needed it but more times than not it felt like they would've preferred to be on their own. so he'd allowed them to enjoy the compound until it was time for training and then he brought them in with everyone else. clearly that had been the wrong thing to do judging by the amount of damage done to the gym.
"uh huh," was all he could say as he shook his head at pietro. they both knew he wasn't sorry and in his current mood he didn't feel like chastising the kid even more. what they needed to figure out was how to rectify the situation so this wouldn't happen again. plus, they needed to get the gym cleaned up and ready to be used again. "you know if there's something going on you can talk with me. i've made the same offer to your sister. there's no need to do â " steve waved his hand around to remind him that there had to be better options for him.

âBecause I kinda need some caffeine, but I already drank my 11th cups for today although I still kinda need some. So I thought, tea would be quite good as a substitute and gives a placebo effect of caffeine.â He rambled, waving his hand in a no particular direction.Â
âSo, no tea? What do you drink then? Orange juice?â he was still rambling, making himself a big mug of tea. âCome on, donât give me that look. Just tell me whatâs your problem is.â
@quxcksilber
Tony leaves his meeting with a dark look in his eyes, hidden by the GRINNING persona heâs forced to plaster on for the HORDES of press. for the PR, Tony Stark, co-operating with the government. the expression falls as soon as heâs in the privacy of his own car, hidden behind tinted glass. his bright car drives away at top speed, heading for the new facility. not a place that tony frequents often, no, heâs given THATÂ up now. but he needs to talk to Cap, and maybe Romanoff too. because who in their right minds made Thunderbolt Ross Secretary of State? dealing with the politicians and the military breathing down his neck recently has already left Tony in a SHORT temper recently --- and now he can see that itâs only going to get WORSE. he doesnât know entirely what the government have planned, but he knows that if Ross is at the helm, itâs going to be DIVISIVE.Â
Tony growls to himself as he speeds down the private road, skidding to a halt in front of metal doors. but thereâs nobody around to question him as he STORMS into the building, and he canât find Steve in any of the obvious places. or ANYONE else. at least, not until he pushes a door open and finds Pietro Maximoff slumped in a chair. Tonyâs stride actually FALTERS at the sight of the young man, stopping short in the doorway. the kid looks PISSED about something, but that might just be because of Tony --- certainly, heâs never looked at him in any other way. but he canât just back out of the room now, so he just squares his shoulders and steps forward.
     âhey, kid. you know where Steve is?â
