So I was listening to my Midas playlist and realized that one song on there is so so incredibly coded I just had to share. âIs There Anybody Out There?â by Lord Huron is arguably the most Midas song Iâve ever heard. Please please please go give it a listen bc it is so them, but in case you donât, hear is my full lyrical breakdown of just how Midas-coded this song is. Strap in, itâs a looong one:
All alone in the long night/ Staring up at the moon/ I've been looking a long time/ What's your name? Am I ever gonna find you?
Obviously, Midas as Quixis in the Worldport. Theyâve been trapped there for so long already, waiting for Icarus to come switch with them and it just⌠never happens. Also the âwhatâs your name/am I ever going to find youâ through the lens of Icarus not even knowing their own name, and getting glimpses of the other worlds, so how is Midas supposed to know who and where they are? Delicious.
Am I reading the wrong rhymes?/ Are you too far to hear?/ I've been talking a long time/ Hope my message will find an ear
Midas, again, desperately trying to give Icarus signs through the Wack but being completely unable to bc of the resets. Theyâre âreading the wrong rhymesâ bc everything they say or do comes across as glitched to Icarus. âHope my message will find an earâ screams Chat/the Things to me, too. Sherb said in the tell all that Chat glitching in is the inciting incident, what allows Icarus and the rest to start timbering the resets, ie the wack. Chat helped decode Quixisâ lettersâ we were the ear they needed.Â
Is there anybody out there?
Midas, again, utterly and completely alone. They donât even have the chicken
Glimpsed a ghost in the darkness/ Stared me straight in the eye/ It was only my own face/ Faintly mirrored in memory and moonlightâÂ
This one in particular is SOOOO coded. âIt was only my own face/faintly mirrored in memory and moonlightâ IS Midasâ character, especially as Quixus, to me. They watched versions of themselves for millennia, to the point where they didnât even know who they were anymore. They have basically nothing left from their own world, nor that itâs really theirs since itâs been so long. Their own past is faintly mirrored now. But also, they watched versions of themself. Legit their face, but not quite right. Faintly mirrored, if you will.
Heard a voice in the vastness/ Whisper words in my ear/ It was only my own noise/ Dimly echoed across the years
Again, same bit as above: the identity crisis of it all. Hearing other versions of you live their lives while youâre stuck, trapped with only your own noise? For years? Get that dude in some therapy STAT. Also, Chatâ voices in the vastness, whispering words in an ear?
Is there anybody out there?/ Am I ever gonna find my way to you?/ Is there anybody out there?/ Is there anybody out there?/ We haven't met, but I wrote this song for you/ Is there anybody out there?
This. Desperately, endlessly reaching out time and time again. Hoping that something will be different this time, that Icarus will be there, that anyone would be there. Midas hasnât meet any of them but they know Icarus, they know all of them. Also, consider briefly how the bleeding eye kept trying to autocorrect back to Icarus, also searching for themâ desperately searching for anyone to fill the Quixis role.
What's the worth of a lone soul?/ Don't they count 'em by two?/ If I only get one roll/ How the hell am I ever gonna find you?
This is also tasty, bc the og concept of the sherbs is two people smushed into one body. âWhatâs the worth of a lone soul/donât they count them by twoâ is absolutely crazy in context of the sherbverse bc yeah⌠theyâve always been two, especially Icarus. Hell I still instinctively write Ic with a bleeding purple eye bc itâs part of who they were, who they all were, for so long. And we can even see that in Asri, who while weâve never seen him with the bloody eye, she wears mismatched converse. Bc across the sherbverse, theyâre all united by the two. Now the second half is also extremely coded, and a fun play on words. âIf I only get one roll(role)â is so good bc yeah Midas only had to screw up ONCE to nearly destroy the multiverse. Like yes I love them thatâs my guy, but they waited once and everything went wrongâ they rolled the dice one time and it didnât work. It also can be heard as âroleâ however, a reference to Quixis. Midas only had the role of Quixis and had no idea what to do after that. And ofc, âhow the hell am I ever going to find youâ is self-explanatory.
Maybe someone will find me/ I'll be waiting right here/ I'll be broadcasting all night/ Hope my signal is loud and clear
Cries. Imagine Midas just waiting in the Worldport as it decays around them, hoping Icarus will figure it out before itâs too late, realizing there is literally nothing they can do anymore except wait. All Midas can do is wait, and hope, and keep sending messages out. Hoping that one of them maybe, just maybe, will be the right one, that Icarus and Chat will be able to decode it.Â
I'm alone in this place/ As I stare out into space/ And I feel something strange/ Like my world has changed
Cries pt 2. This is the moment when Icarus realizes all of it. Maybe not quite in the Worldport during the finale, but close to it. Realizing who Quixis is, that they need help, that something is deeply wrong. Midas in the Worldport, decaying, realizing that it wasnât hopeless after all, they can fix it. Still alone, especially once they arenât Quixis anymore, but still alive too.
Is there anybody out there?/ Is there anybody out there?/ Is there anybody out there?/ We haven't met, but I wrote this song for you/ Is there anybody out there?
Midas waiting for Icarus in the Worldport, hoping and praying that this will work this will fix everything. Icarus, hoping that they can fix everything too.
I'm alone in this place/ As I stare out into space/ And I feel something strange/ Like my world has changed
Midas passing Quixis onto Ic and most importantlyâ they donât die. They get to live, they donât crumble and fade into nothingness. But theyâre still alone.
I'm alone in this place/ As I stare out into space/ And I feel something strange/ Like my world has changed
Struggling to make their own world until, not wanting to be alone without their world and family and Chat and brother untilâ Rael, creation of Queue.Â
Is there anybody out there?
Yes Midas. There is. Youâre out there now.
