Public persona Jesus (all cheer and hope and Good) vs Private persona Jesus (melancholy, pessimistic stress response) vs Core Jesus (still full of fucking hope until gethsemane which we don't know except for the implications of Gethsemane itself being the point where he loses/gives up that hope)

Private Pilate (Pilate's dream, gentle acoustic guitar) vs Public Pilate (1 minute brass fanfare before Pilate and Christ WHICH ALSO BTW roughly follows the structure of the Theme of Accusation)

The silence after Judas arrives at the Garden at the beginning of The Arrest. Theres just the two of them, the intimacy of the Kiss (tm) is entirely preserved, no music accompanying that moment. Just. The visceral Cut that that moment is.

There aren’t any characters in peril. Even when they are, their plot armor is so strong that I’m not worried they’re gonna die. I’m not saying it needs to be a bloodbath, but it would be nice if, as a viewer, I felt like there were stakes.

Don’t get me started on how sterile everyone’s relationships feel. Other than Steve and Dustin and Max and Holly, there haven’t been any multiple-episode relationship threads that have interested me. And Holly is an entirely new character in spite of there being a bunch of series regulars that could get her time and development! I really like Holly, but damn— the ST writers do this shit every single time!

Will and Mike had that nice talk in episode 4, before barely interacting in volume 2, completely killing the tension of Will’s unrevealed feelings. Jonathan and Nancy got fuck-all until their “un-proposal” scene, which was so ambiguous that people didn’t even know it was supposed to be a breakup. Mike and El’s relationship is so stilted that they might as well be broken up.

Hopper and El are going through the same emotional arc they’ve been going through since season 2, and at this point, Hopper isn’t even a likeable character anymore (for me). Hopper and Joyce simply exist to worry about their kids together. I’ve never liked them together in the first place but I wish they acted like they actually like each other. At least Lucas and Max are a satisfying couple.

I was excited about the reintroduction of Kali, but she hasn’t gotten to use her powers or do… anything, really, and her relationship with El doesn’t feel genuinely meaningful. The baby-farm sideplot is scary and could be well done if there was room for it, but it seems so silly and insignificant in the face of Vecna’s plan to end the world.

Speaking of, why do we still not know anything about him? I thought that we would learn the truth about his trauma at the Nevada Cave, that Joyce would fill us in on his backstory— it seems important for the characters to know that, going into the final battle.

God, I could go on. I’ve never been so simultaneously stressed and bored watching a show before.
