 Asking questions in English is a rather strict process. There are 4 and sometimes 5 essential components: The “question word,” (who, what, when, where, why, how, which) the auxiliary, (“to do”) the subject, the verb in its’ infinitive form and the object. In that order!

Here are a few examples without a question word:

1. Do you like to read? 2. Does she speak French? 3. Do they know you? 4. Do we have to go to school?

Here are a few examples with a question word:

1. When do we leave? 2. How do you spell “motorway?” 3. What does that word mean? 4. Why do people grow old?

We can also ask questions by simply inverting the subject and the verb. A very common way of doing this is when we use the verb “to be.” Here are a few examples:

1. Are you ready? 2. How are you? 3. Is that the Prime Minister? 4. Am I on the right bus?

When we ask permission to do something, we often use the word “can” before the subject in order to form a question. For example:

1. Can I have some tea please? 2. Can you tell me where we are? 3. Can I help you? 4. Can they run fast enough?

Remember that your auxiliary must always be conjugated with your subject. In the case of “do” and “can,” the verb remains in its’ infinitive form. “Can,” however, never changes, no matter the situation it, stays the same.

“Be,” must always be conjugated with its’ subject; it acts at once as the auxiliary and the verb, therefore it does not need to be followed by another verb. For example:
