Folktaleweek Day 7: Crown The last illustration for FolktaleWeek! I decided to illustrate Queen Mab, the queen of the fairies. She has been legend in English and Scottish folklore and most famously written about by Shakespeare. I imagine her floating through the forest checking in on all the fairies wearing her forest crown. . Richard Dadd — who died today in 1886 — was a young British painter of huge promise who fell into mental illness while touring the Mediterranean in the early 1840s. He spent over forty years in lunatic asylums but never gave up his calling, producing mesmerisingly detailed watercolours and oil paintings of which The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke (detail here) is now the most well known. The picture’s history encapsulates the peculiar rise and, if not fall, then at least suspension, of its maker’s reputation, and indeed begs the question of what happens to any long-dead forgotten genius after they’ve been rediscovered.
