CELERY WAS ONCE AS SEXY AS KALE
Well, that is certainly a headline I never expected. Good piece with some great links. I’ll certainly never think of Kalamazoo MI in the same way.
Disclosure: Fresh celery is a staple in my kitchen, as much as onions and carrots.
Of interest: Celery is regularly on the Environmental Working Group’s annual “Dirty Dozen” list, along with kale and tomatoes, as being one of those items most likely to be contaminated with residues of one or more pesticides. Celery in central Europe is very different - and much more strongly flavored - than the celery we purchase in North America. Unsurprisingly, like most produce California is the leading grower but Michigan continues to supply a substantial amount. (AgMRC) I imagine that they could be cultivated in Western Washington but it would be a steep learning curve. Not an easy vegetable to grow for marketable quality.
