“What happened to ‘wait for backup?’“ Maxine’s voice is teasingly strict but her relief is still evident.

“I’m sorry,” Tess says, her voice scratchy from lack of use. It still seems hard to believe that she’s been in the hospital for almost two days; to her it seems like only moments ago that she was following their suspect, ignoring Maxine’s shouts for her to stand down. “I didn’t want him to get away…” She winces as her fingers brush against the stitches on her chest. “It won’t happen again.”

Maxine lifts her eyebrows but doesn’t say anything because Tess’s attention has suddenly become occupied by the figure in her peripheral vision. She turns her head to see Hayes curled up in one of the uncomfortably small, lumpy hospital chairs, her arms wrapped around her legs and her head on her knees. “What…?” Tess looks back toward Maxine.

“She’s been here the whole time,” Maxine says softly, a knowing smile on her face. “Hasn’t left once. Unfortunately for your doctors.”

Tess can’t stop staring at Hayes, trying to process Maxine’s words. “She stayed? For me?”

At the sound of her voice, Hayes starts to stir, eyes fluttering open. Maxine slips away, her departure unnoticed by the other women, who seem to have eyes only for one another.

thank you dear. buries face in hands. i just need to stay still and. not walk. not do things. which is driving me mad because i cant not do things i need to do things. my left foot is hurting A LOT like all the time i feel a pain that goes up my leg its so weird, i cant move it at all. the right foot is better but still i cant put my weight on it bc it hurts when i do.
