Corpsman’s Guide to Summer Safety
Hello everyone. If nobody know by now I served in the US Navy as a Corpsman. I had to deal with summer climates and went through safety training. I have seen what the summer sun can do. So here are a few help tips and warnings for you.
Water
You should be drinking at least a half-gallon of water everyday. This should of course be split up during the day, paying special attention to when you wake up and go to bed. A water bottle like this is very good. No weird flavor, and BPA. You want to drink four of these a day.
We had a bunch of Marines drinking creatine without water. Their dumb asses were chugging energy drinks and preworkout... They were falling out left and right. Drink water. Please.
Urine
This sounds gross but look at your pee. The color of your pee will be your guide. No joke. The amount of water you consume will change the color of your pee.
Where it gets dark, this what the Navy doctors called the dumb ass zone. This is where you start having heat injuries and kidney failure. If your pee looks like this, call 911.
Heat Injuries
I have a handy-danddy, break it down Barney style chart.
I swear, I dealt with so many dumb ass Marines in the ER because of this. Stop if you start to feel sick! Do not try to be a man and tough it out. We had Marines die this way. We had a whole battalion in the ER, a battalion! This happens every Goddamn summer. Do not be that guy...
Heat Index/Flag Conditions
Here is a little chart for you, check the weather often. In the military we have flag conditions. This tells you whether it’s safe to do training and PT.
These flags are the same as the above chart, it’s just “Military like pretty colors...”
Please just be safe this summer. I don’t want to hear about anyone getting hurt or sick.
