Rock Inscription in Ajerbaijan made by a Roman legion
"Imp(eratore) Domitiano
Caesare Aug(usto)
Germanic(o)
L(ucius) Iulius
Maximus (centurio)
leg(ionis) XII Ful(minatae)".
The stone was discovered in 1948 from Caucasus/Caspian Sea region that Greeks and Romans called Albania. The inscription was made by legionis XII Fulminatae and it dates back to 84-96 CE. The stone is the world’s easternmost evidence of Roman presence. Scholars believe that the legion was on a campaign and had marched into Ajerbaijan either from Turkey or Armenia.
