So first there was issues with ClexaCon last year with the new management (mostly white lesbians if I remember), now QFX (founded by original ClexaCon founder and a bunch of white lesbians) is looking like a hot racist mess right now yikes... twitter(.)com/moonstiina/status/1290696225662988291
Me, sleeping soundly every night, knowing that I told yāall FROM DAY ONE that the people behind CC were garbage and continue to being proven right.
They literally said they had to save face in front of their āracist and terfyā attendee base LMAO
Reflections on QFX CloudConās Fanfiction Panel
-Ā āI figured out how to make it gayā- my entire writing process in ONE LINE.Ā
- Does theĀ ālegitimisationā or encouragement of fan-written works in certain fandoms encourage an obsession with canon? Does it make canon superior? How does this change the landscape for fanfic writers who veer from canon? A huge question; the answer remains unclear but itās definitely something to think about within your own fandom.
- The IP law in the US surrounding fan fiction and fan-created works is muddy. The key take away points were: 1. there is a cultural value in fandom brought by artists and writers. Ā 2. in many cases, it would cause more harm to take fan works down than to leave them alone. Ā 3. It is important to know who'sĀ āsandboxā youāre playing in; know the brand and stay within their limits. 4. As an AU writer, you weirdly have more of a standing in defending your work asĀ ātransformativeā because you have contributed more original intellectual property to your story.
- Queerbaiting andĀ āfix itā fan fiction. A very interesting discussion led by Care. The main point being that, in order to be truly angry about queerbaiting, you are implying that you believe in the legitimacy of the canon and the world. So, in some cases (*cough* Rizzles *cough*) anger is a moreĀ ālegitā or predictable response and fan fiction will never be enough to repair the damage of queerbaiting. In other fandoms, for example Pitch Perfect where (direct quote from Care)Ā āthe canon is garbageā, itās a lot easier to enjoy the re-telling of the story with a more satisfying (read: gay af) ending.
This was SUCH an interesting discussion. I learned so much. It made be proud to be a fanfiction writer; seeing other queer women talking about this always helps me see it as a more legitimate form of expression.Ā
In case you missed it
last year there was a ton of clexacon drama, even actually talent spoke out about how terrible the event was.
the entire crew of clexacon apart from the 2 people who ruined it ended up resigning after this past year, and a bunch of them have now moved on to a new queer event called QFXEvents
This one in particular is called QFX East which makes me think theyre gonna have a total of four all over the world so we dont have to travel as much to get there! so far this is the first and only one they have announced. I have a lot of great friends working hard on this and I encourage you to check it out. They are composed of trans men, queer women, and POC.
A big issues with cl*xac*n was their accessibility, qfc released their accessibility info and it is... so well done
Please check out QFX Events!!!
