Riverdale ‘Chapter Twenty-Three: The Blackboard Jungle’
Riverdale is back! To be honest, I found this episode a little boring. There were great moments, like Archie beating the crap out of someone who deserved it and finally meeting Betty’s long lost brother. But overall it was just a little uneventful.
Southside High has been shut down, due to it being the place where Jingle Jangle was made. So, Jughead and the Serpents are transferred to Riverdale High. Cheryl, Reggie and literally half the school are not thrilled about them being there. But surprisingly Toni and Sweet Pea were excited. I mean it is a huge step up from Southside High, which was pretty much a dump.
I agree with Principal Weatherbee that they shouldn’t behave in gang like behaviour while at school. That means not wearing Serpent jackets, no visible tattoos or anything relating to the Serpents.
Jughead annoyed me this episode. Like, he was acting all arrogant and wanted to flaunt that fact that he’s a Serpent. Just don’t wear your jacket at school. How hard is that to do?? Anyway, I have to admit the Serpents looks hilarious in their new Riverdale high uniforms. And I never thought I’d see Sweet Pea in a turtleneck!
So, Jughead takes the liberty of making a club for the Serpents, called the Swords and Serpents Club. Where they basically just come, during school hours, to be the Serpents. Umm, sure. I mean, can't they just hang out as the Serpents after school and on the weekend? How about that instead of making a fake club? Jughead is so deep in the Serpents now and I’m not sure how I feel about it.
In other news, there’s defiantly something between Cheryl and Toni right? Honestly, I think I’d be into that.
Archie is approached by some guy who claims he's from the FBI who is investigating Hiram Lodge. He wants Archie to help him. I’m not convinced that he’s actually from the FBI, he just seems too sketchy. I don’t know why Archie just blatantly believed him. He’s a minor, so shouldn’t his father legally have to know? The whole thing just seemed a little odd.
As suspected, Cheryl uses the kiss she witnessed between Archie and Betty to blackmail Archie. Oh, and Cheryl also spills that Nick assaulted Veronica too, which was news to Archie. The FBI guy pushing him to find out what truly happened to Nick, and hearing this news, he decided to go pay him a visit.
Archie tells Cheryl she’ll get another cheque from Nick, because her mother burnt the other one. And speaking of Cheryl’s mother, her face has miraculous recovered (or maybe she got plastic surgery??) from her burns, and she is now a prostitute. Cheryl is disgusted, the only reaction I’d settle for from her. And she doesn’t even want the money because she’s enjoying her new job so much.
For some reason he wore Jason’s blazer to go visit Nick. I’m not sure why. Nick knows who Archie is so why dress up like Jason? I have no idea. Both of Nick’s legs are in casts. He basically can’t move which goes Archie the advantage. He agrees to write the cheque, but they both know that’s not the reason Archie came to see him. He ends up punching the crap out of him. I’m kinda not okay with Archie being violent like this, but Nick does deserves it. He breaks his nose, but I’m worried for Archie. First the whole fiasco with the gun and now this?
But hey, Veronica forgives him because he was standing up for her. Which in a way was kinda sweet. And Archie tells her the truth about what happened between him and Betty. Veronica is a bit surprised, but is she really considering their history? And besides, they were both broken up at that point.
Polly had the twins! About time, it seems that she had been pregnant for ages. But she had them and didn’t even bother to tell her family. As Betty says the ‘farm’ she’s living at is basically a cult, which would explain her kinda weird behaviour. And the names of her twins are Juniper and Dagwood. What the hell kind of names are those? I had the exact same reaction as Betty.
Polly leaves and Betty is feeling lonely. Maybe that is really the end of her relationship with her sister. It’s obvious Polly wants nothing to do with her family. So Betty decides to track down her long lost brother. To maybe fill the void of Polly being gone.
She finds him. Quite easily actually. Maybe too easily? His name is Charle Smith. Honestly PLL has ruined the name Charles for me and I am not here for that. But he goes by the name Chic so thank god we hopefully won’t have to hear the name Charles on this show ever again.
Betty and Alice go to see him. And I got creepy vibes form him the moment he was introduced. He knows exactly who they are and where they live. That sounds a lot like someone who goes by the name the ‘Black Hood’. And he works in ‘fantasy fulfilment’. So he basically works in the sex industry. Anyone else think there’s a good chance that he knows Penelope??
He wants nothing to do with them, and I kinda feel bad for Alice. Also, doesn’t he look a little bit like FP??? Maybe he’s Alice and FP’s love child?? I think that’s a big possibility. And wouldn’t that be interesting for Betty and Jughead to share a sibling!
There was no talk of the Black Hood at all this episode, except for Archie expressing his doubt to the (fake?) FBI agent and saying that he doesn’t think they caught the right guy. At least one character thinks the Black Hood hasn’t been caught.
After her first meeting with her brother doesn’t end well, Betty goes to see him again. And perfect timing, because he’s being beat up by some guy and she pepper sprays him and brings her brother home to get cleaned up.
Her parents are surprisingly okay with him now, although there was something weird between Hal and Chic. I think he knows that Chic is not actually his son.
And Chic creepily watching Betty sleep. That was actually so disturbing. And the creepy horror music didn’t help. This show has never made me feel that way before.
I got serious Psycho Derek vibes from him. He’s seems obsessed with Betty, to the point of I don’t know, wanting to kidnap her maybe. I’m thinking either he’s not actually her brother and he’s pretending to be him for some reason. I mean, Betty pretty easily found him. Almost too easily. Or he’s FP and Alice’s secret love child.
I still think there is a possibility that he’s the Black Hood, but they made him really creepy on the first episode he’s on so I’m kinda thinking maybe he’s not.
Interesting to see where things go from here and to find out what Chic’s deal is. But to be honest, that ending just made me feel really unsettled and I don’t know if I like it.
