Final year students at Staffordshire University are showcasing INVISO a new and exciting photographic exhibition, at both the University and at CUBE in Manchester. The exhibition will be the culmination of three years of study and presents imagery from thirty-one graduates covering many genres from documentary, portraiture, fashion, landscape and art projects, including contemporary and traditional images utilising black and white, colour, digital and traditional processes.
Photography is a part of every day life with millions of images being uploaded on social media sites and camera phones it might beg the question therefore, what are photographs and what do they communicate? INVISO aims to show that visual communication through photographs can tell a story, describe or reveal things or even in some instances function as a form of therapy. In Yvonne Grimshaw Baker’s intimate documentary series ‘The Weird Toe’ she photographs her sister who is intersex, which she states has helped both become closer in the process. In a different way Kelly Mitchell through props and costumes, and Cerian Chandler’s self portraits are using the medium to examine mental illness. In Ian Gotham’s series ‘Here Be Dragons’ is an eerie night urban vision and Kevin Clegg’s long exposures depict the effect of the metropolitan crowd in motion. Tish Scripps challenges the way we think about beauty and body, whilst Steve Ferneyhough’s work expresses his religious faith. Ian Hilditch’s black and white photograph explore ancient sites like Arbor Low in Derbyshire, while Cat Egerton details decaying meat and reflects upon the beautiful image once we have detached ourselves from the difficult subject matter. This is a show of contrasts.
