#NowPlaying: 'Maidenhead' by 'Protomartyr' out of 'Under Color of Official Right'.
...
Dianne Coffee & Protomartyr at Siren Festival.
For a relatively ‘new’ band (I use the term new loosely; they formed in 2008) Protomatyr have a writing style way beyond their time as a group of musicians. Their 2014 album ‘Under the Colour of Official Right’ is an album which is simply exquisite and rather than having the usual heavy guitars pushes far further, with the lyrics actually matching the playing: a rare moment of clarity. Words rely heavily on a postmodern outlook – reflecting on what they are doing as they are doing it but with a brilliantly dark and carnivorous attitude, which few bands can do. All right, it isn’t a cutting critique or a none cliché ridden love song but it’s still very engaging as subject matter.
‘I’ll Take That Applause’ is the very last track of the album, encapsulating everything about the album into a rough three minutes. A confident goodbye to a successful album the self-referential nature of the lyrics help it to feel like an extra otherwise ignored though without it the album would not feel complete. Unlike any other the track is split away from the previous by a larger gap – this one rather than carrying over delivers an impressive build alone, to the deliverance of a masterpiece.
