A great front loading activity to complete in small groups is to ask students to describe the front cover of the book in one word. each student will get a turn to share their word. students must then agree on one of these words to elaborate on and come up with a short synopsis of what they think the book will be about.
1. Night had approached, and there I was sitting in silence, out in the cold, my stomach hollow[ed] for food, I tried to move but I had no strength, my eyes started to blur and my sight became transparent, I felt like something is side me had died tonight. 2. As I stood outside on a cold winters night with no strength, i cried in silence watching other human beings throw away good nutrient food, food my stomach hollow[ed] for, it’s like I was transparent to them as I watched them commit such a selfish act.
3. Front Loading: From the book the students can look at the cover and have a brief flick through some of the pages to brainstorm some ideas & questions regarding the book and what they predict it to be about. From these questions, they can be used to ensure they comprehended what it was they read, they can see if their predictions were accurate or not contrasting and comparing their initial ideas.
