This is a similar poster to one I have seen in a classroom whilst on placement. It gives the students some guidelines to follow so that they are able to construct an interesting and imaginative piece of writing. Planning their narrative before they start writing was essential so that the writing piece was stronger and utilised a better use of the subject matter with their sentence structure, language and words, as well as conventions and grammar.

After watching the debate, I am still sitting on the fence. I think both points are important in teaching students to read. English is a very confusing language, with lots of different rules and I think all teaching strategies should be welcomed.Â

To engage with students I have presented my questions as a Popplet. This allows students to add their answers, see what other students answers are and compile the whole classes answers into one. Students can add text, drawings, pictures and also a recorded video of themselves.Â

I’ve chosen to write about the comic book editor.
This isn’t a bad resource, but I wouldn’t say it’s a great one either. The story provided is a great basis for students and it allows them to solely focus on their language and making the story more interesting. It is good that it includes mini tutorials about the use of pronouns, verbs and adverbs, however, it is very easy for students to just skim over this feature and guess which word fits in each box instead of actually using the information available. It would be beneficial to go through the information provided beforehand as a whole class, and just use this as a refresher or reinforcer activity. Writing out the ending is the next part and the teacher should also set some guidelines for this as there is no minimum length ending and it doesn’t actually make you write anything if you don’t want to. By encouraging students to share their comic at the end of the lesson, students would be more likely to complete the activity properly so that they have something to share with their peers. This activity could also be used to emphasise what a difference an ending can make to a story as all the stories created would be the same up until the ending. This could be used as a preceding activity to students writing their own alternate ending to a text they’ve been working on as a class.
Overall, not a bad resource but it needs to be paired with explicit teaching lessons and other activities to make it meaningful.
