For ineffable husbands: (this might be dumb but bear with me) something with hurt Crowley where Gabriel takes revenge for the botched trials by helping a cult to trap Crowley for their own gain and he like taunts Aziraphale about it but Az is having none of it and after a while of looking finds Crowley and busts him out. Just like lots of hurt Crowley and lots of Az comforting him.
authorâs note: no such thing as too dumb around these parts! me and my 3 brain cells love this idea, anon, and hope we do it justice. :)
-âyou know, Aziraphale,â Gabriel says, voice dark and mysterious as he circles the angel, âI have absolutely no idea why you thought itâd slip by me.â
-Gabrielâs infiltrated the bookshop. only just renewed, only just returned from ash, Aziraphaleâs more than a little afraid the archangel is going to take his revenge by burning it down again. he canât start over again, doesnât have the energy, even if he has all of the time in the world.
-âand what did I think would slip by you?â Aziraphale asks innocently, despite already knowing what Gabrielâs talking about. what else would it be regarding?
-âyou donât fool me,â Gabriel stops, eyeing him intently, shaking his head slowly, âwith your accent and books and fancy little bowties... I see through it all, Aziraphale.â
-Gabriel sounds so sure of himself, it sends a shrill running down Aziraphaleâs spine. heâs careful not to let it show, however, because he can never let him know heâs winning.
-âIâm not sure I know what youâre referring to,â Aziraphale looks at him pointedly, holding his head up, hoping the archangel reads his posture and not the frightened look in his eyes.
-âoh, so youâre telling me if I snapped my fingers right now and transported you into holy fire, youâd just walk straight out again? is that right?â Gabriel barks out a laugh, though it sounds about as far from humorous as possible. âwell, your little friend has been put somewhere youâll never find him.â
-âyes, thatâs right, Crowley,â Gabriel makes a face like the demonâs name leaves a bad taste in his mouth, âheâs with some cult members, or Christians, or something. I didnât put him there myself, to be honest, but rest assured heâs having the time of his life... which is a good thing, because heâs never leaving.â
-Gabriel only shoots him a smug grin before heâs gone, vanishing into thin air, leaving only a cold breeze in his wake. Aziraphale finally drops his facade, and hurries about, trying to find something that might help him save Crowley, before itâs too late.
-he tries so very many places. just about everywhere he can think, visits every infamous cult and underground less-than-holy church. he gets himself into more than a few pickles, what with once appearing right in the centre of a seance, but thatâs not his problem.
-heâs always been rather good at getting himself out of things, but when it comes to saving others heâs, well, useless, and thatâs putting it lightly. although he loves to do so, he sacrifices sleeping for a while, figuring the extra hours might provide him with more time to find leads and the like.
-in a matter of weeks, heâs wholly burned out, and yet heâs nowhere near ready to give up. heâll never give up, he promises, and perhaps this is why, on the night that it happens, the call is so clear and vivid.
-it even makes him scan his surroundings, because it sounds like it comes from right behind him. out of nowhere, he hears Crowley say his name, and then again. once heâs searched under every table and beneath his bed, popped his head into every room and such, he realises whatâs happened.
-Crowleyâs praying to me, he tells himself, finally understanding. the demon who lost his faith so long ago is now praying to me, of all beings, like Iâm something comparable to God. and, above all, Iâm hearing him.
-he feels a sudden adrenaline rush. he scrambles about, not quite sure of what to do, but he follows the sound. by the time heâs nearing the source, itâs almost deafening, but he couldnât even dream of turning it down.
-after his long, gruelling search, he finds the demon trapped in the basement of a woman heâs never heard of before. sheâs not on the records of occultists, satanists, witches, extremists or anything of the like, then he supposes she wouldnât be; Gabriel wouldnât want to make it too easy for him, would he?
-âAziraphale?â Crowley says, sounding hoarse as he squints over at the new, unfamiliar-yet-all-too-familiar frame walking towards him.
-the demonâs not wearing his glasses. as Aziraphale nears him, he finds they arenât even beside him in his cage, either, and this is how the angel knows something is severely wrong.
-âCrowley,â he says, voice hushed, âweâve got to be quick. here, let me...â
-he doesnât manage to finish before heâs holding out a hand and snapping his fingers. to his surprise, this is all it takes to unlock the door of Crowleyâs makeshift prison, and yet the demon still seems reluctant to exit.
-âcome on, Crowley,â Aziraphale insists, though heâs sure to keep his tone friendly; he figures the demon has gone through enough lately. âwe have to get out of here, before she-â
-âis it really you?âÂ
-Aziraphale can only look at him incredulously, then furrow his brows with concern. âof course itâs me. who else would it be?â
-Crowley sits up straighter, but does not stand. âit could be another trick. Iâve seen this situation before, a hundred times. how do I know itâs really you, and not Elena?â
-âwell...â Aziraphale thinks, then slowly extends his hand to the perched demon. âlet me show you.â
-Crowley seems reluctant as he takes Aziraphaleâs hand, but he does. his hands feel somehow rugged and worn yet gentle as they take Aziraphaleâs, and then in an instant theyâre back at the bookshop, back in the safety of his little space, his home and somewhere Crowleyâs familiar with.
-he doesnât seem to be able to speak for a short while. his mouth falls open, Aziraphale notices as he watches him, and when he tries to form something like a word, he breaks into a flood of tears.
-âoh, dear, come here,â Aziraphaleâs maternal instinct immediately kicks in, and he envelopes Crowley in his arms. usually, he suspects Crowley would push him away and tell him heâs not a baby, but this time he lets himself be held, buries his face into Aziraphaleâs neck and weeps uncontrollably.
-âI- they- you-â Crowley tries three unique sentences, all of which are smothered by his cries. he sounds terrible, Aziraphale knows it all too well, and so he hushes him, knowing just how this sort of thing feels, and how long it takes to blow over.
-âthatâs alright,â Aziraphale says soothingly, running a hand through Crowleyâs matted red hair, trying to calm him though he canât tell how successful he is in doing so. âyou just let it all out, and you can tell me later, hmm?â
-his question is rhetorical, and yet he still feels Crowley nod against him. the image of the demonâs chartreuse eyes watering and spilling over like a poorly poured drink, or a well after a heavy the Great Flood, will stick with him forever, he knows.
-slowly, the demon begins to still against him. heâs still sniffling, still keening into Aziraphaleâs touch on his head like a contented cat, but his tears gently begin to stop.
-for the most part, they end. he pulls back just a little to look Aziraphale in the eyes, still looking scared of the unnamed events that had transpired, but thereâs a newfound hope that Aziraphale can see reflected in them that inspires him.
-âletâs go to Alpha Centauri after all, hey? just for a little while. wouldnât that be nice?â
-his voice steady, sounding more sure of himself than ever before, he proposes the idea. itâs not original by any means - if anything heâs a little late to suggest it - but that doesnât matter, because the smile that spreads across Crowleyâs features makes the wait completely and utterly worth it.
-âyeah,â Crowley agrees, sounding croaky and worn out, but excited by the prospect of a change to his routine. âyeah, thatâd be really nice, angel. thank you.â
