My take on the “Temporary” brief was to focus on the symptoms of narcolepsy – a rare, neurological disorder. The symptoms occur in lifelong temporary episodes.
From the mind map that I created and the workshops that I have taken, the progression of my ideas are reflected in my project book covering both 2D and 3D areas of expression.
Trying to match the technique to the narcolepsy symptom, has been helped by researching the work of contemporary artists. In particular, Roxy Paine’s industrial stainless steel “Neuron” inspired me to create my own interpretation of a neuron with 3D drawing with wire.
Including the core elements is an ongoing process: Exploration of Media; Ethics & Sustainability; Engagement with the Learning Environment; Communication & Knowledge Sharing; and Research & Reflection. I feel this will improve as I move beyond the settling in period.
To date, I have explored fragmented night-time sleep through photography, visually connecting the brain with various symptoms through acetate etching, a damaged brain (& its inner animal) through digital composition and acetate etching, a decaying brain (leaf) through stop motion (in progress), brain fog through slow motion video, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic & hypnopompic hallucinations through 3D scanning and 3D printing, a line drawing of the brain with wire and a 3D neuron with wire, and in the slow drawing workshop the central subject of my drawing was the horse chestnut tree in its temporary state before the change imposed on it by the seasons.
