July 29th - Challengers of The Unknown
When four acquaintances miraculously survive a disastrous plane crash unscathed, they conclude that the quartet must be somehow āliving on borrowed time.ā Ā Furthermore, they decided toĀ band together to utilize this time so to take on hazardous exploration and adventures. The four included expert veteran pilot Kyle āAceā Morgan, renown daredevil Matthew āRedā Ryan, celebrated strongman Leslie āRockyā Davis, and the acclaimed scientist Walter āProfā Haley. Together they became the Challengers of the Unknown. Soon famous, the Challengers accepted many āunknownā challenges assigned by The Pentagon or at the request of people in need. Over time the Challengers established the hollowed-out Challengersā Mountain as their headquarters and base of operations. They encountered all manner of threats, from wizards, thieves and evil geniuses to aliens and deadly robots. Their adventures later veered toward superheroics, and they took on everything from occult menaces to Bermuda Triangle mysteries. The Challengers traveled through space, time, and other dimensions. They encountered the likes of the Doom Patrol, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and the Sea Devils (with whom they battled the criminal group known as Scorpio). The Challengers of The Unknown have since partially retired although Ace Morgan has remained active and shows up here and there. The group of heroes first appeared in the pages of Showcase #6 (1958).
