i can't help but feel that ghita skali was picked partly because she critiqued the whole award process and its history. but i do agree with her point that artists are becoming 'guests' within the art world. things aren't run by or for them, institutions are using them for the appearance of cultural significance or to carry out a certain idea/concept as an exhibition. i agree with her on that but it was a very minimal part of her work.

josefin arnell's film was wacky, objectively not very artistic and essentially parodied the worst parts of 'what we do in the shadows' but the board probably wanted to be seen as progressive and modern, i think. personal opinion, someone else could have loved it, but i'd seen better independent films at the cork film festival.

jonas staal had a wonderful documentary about Ascension Island off the west coast of Africa. He accompanied it with a mini model of the island, both before and after its being inhabited. The documentary can be accessed on his website. https://www.jonasstaal.nl/projects/empires-island/

michael tedja's work was nice. poetry accompanied abstract art in a large scale installation that was quite pleasant to observe. he also created statues with unclear purpose, laid out, supine, for the viewer to see and question. the text of the work was layered, painted over and rewritten, a very honest display of the thought process of an artist, which i enjoyed a lot. there were collages reminiscent of some reduced Combine or cubist collage, but I didn't feel it was a rip-off if either of those things. His sculptural language was very unique to anything I had seen before in this kind of context.

Sœur de la célèbre compositrice et pédagogue Nadia Boulanger, Lili Boulanger fut comme un météore dans le firmament musical, illuminant le monde de sa splendeur avant de s’éteindre bien trop tôt. Cette virtuose, première dame à s’adjuger le Prix de Rome en la noble discipline de la composition musicale, a quitté ce monde à l’âge cruel de 24 ans. Issue d’une lignée illustre, fille de l’éminent compositeur Ernest Boulanger et de l’exquise cantatrice russe Raïssa Ivanovna Mychetsky, elle grandit en un terreau fertile qui fit éclore son génie précoce. Sa grande sœur Nadia, pilier et guide, fut son mentor et son inspiration, elle qui enseigna aux plus éminents compositeurs de son siècle. Dès l’aube de sa vie, à l’âge de six ans, Lili déchiffrait les partitions avec une aisance déconcertante. Malheureusement, son corps la trahit, la tuberculose intestinale l'assaillant avec une cruauté sans nom. Pourtant, elle ne céda point, continuant à composer avec une ardeur inébranlable. À 21 ans, la voici à Rome, parmi les lauréats du Prix de Rome, à la Villa Médicis, berceau de la créativité et de l’innovation. En 1915, Lili et sa sœur fondèrent la Gazette des classes de composition du Conservatoire, tissant des liens entre les musiciens engagés au front et ceux restés au pays : une lumière dans la tourmente de la guerre. Hélas, le mauvais sort s'abattit et elle s’éteignit en 1918, laissant derrière elle un monde musical ébranlé mais enrichi. Sa musique, empreinte d’une profondeur émotionnelle et d’une sophistication rare, continue de résonner à travers les âges, témoignage éternel de son génie éphémère.
