“Be whoever you want to be,” Harry tells Harries at his concerts, and then he grasps a pride flag to wave over his head. He reads signs fans have brought to signal that they are coming out. (”No, it’s because of YOU that you’re coming out.” “Tina, she’s gay!”) He promotes gender fluid designers and plays a gay policeman in a movie set in the 1950s. Harry makes his opinion clear on this topic: he’s an ally for everyone.Â
(x) During this Pride Month, your Themed Weekends team celebrates all Harries -- no matter who you are. You’re important to Harry exactly as you are, and you’re important to us too. That’s why, on Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13, @ihearthes and @harolinastyles (respectively) will bring you a #PrideCelebration. We’re proud to know and be part of this supportive community of Harries.Â
As always, thank you for letting us be your TW Team!

Fan Submission:
In June of 2018, during the American leg Harry Styles Live on Tour, Harry's store featured two Pride-themed Treat People With Kindness T-shirts whose proceeds went to GLSEN. GLSEN is an American education organization working to create a harassment and bullying-free educational environment for LGBTQ+ students. But that harassment doesn’t stay within the school walls. And our fandom is no stranger to that kind of behaviour. It's good to recognize the responsibility and power that fans yield, and make the spaces that we occupy safe and open to everyone.
Any subject that brings traditional values of gender and sexuality into question leads to many conversations about the gendered properties of clothing and people’s self expression. As someone visibly supportive of the queer community, and someone who has repetedly expressed his disinterest in labels (of his sexuality and his clothing choices) Harry has a large queer following worldwide. However in that following, trans and non-binary fans face disproportionate harassment in this fanbase compared to their cis counterparts.
Cis fans have the priviledge to safely debate the meaning of She, joke about Harry’s exploration of gender non-conformity and what that means to him. In reality, femininity in men is treated as something inherently insidious or perverted. The constant questioning of Harry’s authenticity or motivations behind his self expression only serves to prove this point.
Trans and non-binary fans and creators who try to navigate these conversations with the nuance that their experience provides, through speaking or through their work, are put under a microscope. They are bullied, harassed, and more often than not pushed out of social media platforms under threat of physical harm and/or death. In this context (and in many others) gender non-conformity and the exploration of what gender means to someone, is only acceptable when it is created or interpreted for the pleasure of cis audiences.
As trans fans have pointed out, a space that celebrates a gender non-conforming man should be a safe haven for trans people. Instead it ends up being a cesspool of queerphobia and vulgarity. With the rise of transphobic rhetoric on a global scale and legislation that aims to strip away the rights of trans people, now more than ever it is our responsibility to make it clear that transphobia doesn’t belong in this space. Refuse to participate in the transphobic rhetoric that questions the validity or authenticity of gender non-conformity and tries to present it as inherently insidious or even pornographic. Continue to celebrate feminine or masculine people all over the gender spectrum. Support and help protect trans fans.
During Pride month it is important to remember the BIPOC trans people who helped lead queer liberation in the US and continue their legacy.
The Equality Act, currently in congress, is a bill that extends the prohibition of discrimination based on ex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The bill allows the Department of Justice to intervene in equal protection actions in federal court on account of sexual orientation or gender identity. Such discrimination disproportionatelly affects the trans community and particularly BIPOC trans people.
Treat People With Kindness has, and will always include trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people.
