"You understand us?"

Morgan pulled back from the giant Typhon and nearly dropped his wrench. The coral stretched out before him, following the creature. He felt it pulse and hum as it encircled him. This was the breakthrough they'd been searching for. The neuromods made from the telepaths finally opened up communication between human and Typhon.

"Why do you consume us?" It reached towards him with a tendril. Where it touched his skin was freezing. "Why do you torture us?"

Imagine if, when you installed the Typhon mods, you gained the ability to speak to Typhon. What would they say? All of this time, you've been keeping them in containment, feeding them prisoners, studying them to turn them into mods, and recycling them to turn into 'exotic material'. I cannot imagine they'd be happy.

He takes a long drag from the bottle, wincing slightly at the burn of alcohol down his gullet. He never fancies duck beer but this is all that’s left… He removes his psychoscope, dropping it on the floor, and runs his fingers through his hair. ‘You know,’ he says. ‘There are enough seats for us all on the shuttle.’

‘We won’t be able to make it in time,’ she answers softly, gesturing at the sleeping figure on the lounge chair behind them. ‘Besides, it won’t get any easier even if our brother is awake.’ A pause: ‘You know how it is to argue with him. You saw it yourself just a few seconds ago.’

He lets out a short bark of laughter, amused at the reply, and asks no more on her decision to remain on the doomed space station.

They have saved as many survivors as possible within the span of a day - healing the injured, freeing the possessed - and cleared a straight path towards the shuttle from the alien freaks. But there is this one last task to perform: and that is what forces them to use the stun gun against their brother.

The silence that follows is interrupted occasionally by the soft snores from their sleeping brother, and the ticking of the hidden timebomb.
