Zelda is in her room, curled up in her too-big bed under too-warm covers, the sheikah slate laying on her lap like a glorified rock. She’s getting closer to discovering its secret, but she doesn’t like it at all.
Link is just beyond the door, Master Sword in hand, ever vigilant. He (Zelda, inadvertently) had been ordered to keep the door open, at least a crack, but it is shut fully.
Link had shut it himself, without asking, without sparing a glance.
Zelda is thankful, she thinks, chest growing warm as she remembers him leaving.
One of these days I'll write a fic where pre-calamity someone asks Zelda if she's tried to make a bow made of light or something
And Zelda is rightfully indignant and says something a long the lines of "Do you really think that trying to shoot an imaginary bow will-" and then suddenly there's a literal bow and arrow made of light
Would she pissed that she's been praying for hours everyday for most of her life, only for THIS to work? Yeah. Is it really funny? Also yes
Getting to Know You: A Family Introduction CHAPTER 3
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 [you are here]
SYNOPSIS: Most people only know Link by his role as the Wielder of the Sacred Sword that Seals the Darkness for the prophesied Return of Calamity Ganon. But beyond this role, none paid much attention to his origins. Zelda was one such person and only saw him as her personal knight-bodyguard. Until one stormy day when she gets a glimpse of what kind of person Link really is and the family he was part of.
CHAPTER 3 - Rest and Purpose
The storm continued to rage on throughout the afternoon with endless rain and rumbling thunder. By the time it passed, the sky was in the colours of twilight with the golden rays of the setting sun. The ambient gold and pink lights glimmered through the window and down onto the sleeping princess. She had fallen asleep after her hearty lunchtime meal, tucked underneath layers of blankets and pillows on top of the tatami bed by the lingering warmth of the fireplace.
Like a bear coming out of hibernation, Zelda slowly wiggled herself out those layers stretching out her arms with a long yawn. Her hair was a mess. She was just able to sit upright to stretch out her arms while letting out a long yawn. It was the longest and deepest nap she had for some time.
“How…how long was I asleep?” she asked out loud while rubbing her sleepy eyes. She then hand-combed her tangled hair back and looked towards the window. It surprised Zelda when she realised that it was already sunset.
“Good afternoon, Zelda!” A cheery Aria greeted the waking Princess and knelt next to her, "How are you feeling?”
Zelda let out one more yawn, this time covering her mouth and stretching once more. "I feel much more refreshed. Thank you for asking, Aria. Where’s Link?”
“Link’s outside, checking on the horses. The storm stopped not too long ago. How is your ankle doing?” Aria then asked her.
Zelda had almost forgotten about that. She quickly pulled away the blanket to check on her injured ankle. It was still wrapped in the bandage placed there by Link, though when she moved her ankle around, it did not ache or have lingering soreness like before.
“Hmm, it does not hurt as much as before, so I should be okay from now on.”
“That’s good to hear, Zelda! Oh! Before I forget, here’s your jacket! Link also took the time to clean up your boots and prepare your bags for the ride back to the Castle!” Aria informed her as she presented to the Princess her folded blue jacket top.
“Oh, thank you so much!” Zelda said as she received her jacket, a little surprised with her own voice. "What was Link up to while I was asleep?”
Aria simply shrugged, "Not much, after lunch. I helped with cleaning up the kitchen. He asked me to watch over you while he dried out his and your clothes, cleaning the floors of mud, making sure that the horses are safe and dry and fed, and also making sure that you were safe and cosy while you’re taking a nap!”
This took Zelda aback with even more surprise. “I see! It sounds like he has been making himself busy. Did he not take any rest for himself at all?”
“Um…kind of? For five minutes between chores and checking to make sure that you’re okay.” Aria then let out a sigh, “I did tell him to relax, but he keeps telling me that he’s ‘on duty’ and gets restless when he doesn’t have anything else to do. So he does chores and moves around to make time pass. And….speaking of which!”
It was then that Link entered through the front door, removing his muddy boots when he looked up and noticed the now awakened Princess.
“Ah, good afternoon, Your Highness!” Link greeted her with a nod. He put his boots aside by the door and stepped onto the tatami mat. He then kneeled next to her and checked on her bandaged foot. “How is your ankle?”
Zelda looked down attentively as he unwrapped the bandage from her ankle. There was no sign of any bruising or redness. “It looks much better than this morning. No aches or pains.”
Link nodded with a brief look of relief. “That’s good to hear.”
He then stood up and, after fixing himself, offered his hand to her. “We should get ready for the ride back to Castletown. We are already far behind schedule for our return to the Castle.”
Zelda’s eyes widened with realisation and a sense of urgency. "Ah yes! My father would be already sick with worry by now.”
Without any second thought, Zelda took Link’s hand, and with his help, she stood back up onto her feet. A little stiff from sleeping on the tatami floor, but with her knight’s support, she was just able to steady herself. Though still holding hands, Zelda was standing rather very close to her knight, who checked to make sure that she was able to move on her own. Sky Blue’s glimmer met with Emerald Green’s shine. Their shared glance lingered a little longer than intended.
Just as Ocean Blue eyes observed the two with curiosity and a giggling smile.
Both Link and Zelda felt Aria’s curious stare with their cheeks flushing red. The two immediately let go of the other’s hand and took a step away from one another with awkward coughs.
“Ah right. You can get yourself ready in the other room. I will clean up everything here and prepare the horses,” Link then rushed himself away before Zelda could say anything else.
Aria simply let out a soft sigh, “There he goes again…”
.
Once steady on her own two feet, Aria guided Zelda to the guest room at the far end of the country home. The young girl explained that after the Princess fell asleep on the tatami bed by the fireplace, Link wanted to move Zelda to this room and onto a comfy bed. Aria jokingly explained that Link spent a good half-hour debating with himself on what to do before she had to point out to him that Zelda was very comfortable in her sleep and it was best to leave the sleeping Princess alone so they did not disturb her slumber.
Zelda blushed at the mental image but was grateful nonetheless for their hospitality. She took her time preparing herself by fixing up her blouse and trousers, then putting on her blue jacket. She tried to redo her signature braided hair after parts of it became undone during her long nap.
Aria had stepped out of the room to assist her brother in their cleanup and then returned to the room when she noticed the Princess struggling with her hair.
“Do you need help with braiding your hair, Zelda?” she asked.
Zelda glanced over her shoulder with one hand awkwardly holding up her half-braided strand of hair. “Ah, please do not worry about me!”
“No, no! It’s okay! I’m very good at braiding hair. Let me help!”
The young girl entered the room and grabbed a brush before pulling in the chair by the guest room’s desk. She then grabbed a small stool to stand on before she prompted the Princess to sit down in front of her.
Zelda was taken aback by how determined Aria was to help her. Though she mused to herself that Aria’s own sense of initiative was much like her older brother.
Once the Princess sat down, Aria immediately started her work to brush and comb her long golden hair and began to braid. The young girl’s handling was neither as rough nor did it pull on her hair tightly. Zelda could tell that the young girl was very good at her hair braiding craft.
“Who taught you how to make hair braids so well, Aria?”
“My brother taught me!”
“Link?”
“Yeah! He used to braid my hair when I was younger. He then showed me how to make braids so that I can make braids by myself and for the horse’s manes too!”
“I see. Link must be a very good brother to you, yes?”
“Ah huh! The very best brother I could ever ask for!”
Zelda smiled at that. Though she couldn’t help but feel a bit envious of how close their sibling bonds were. She sat still as the young girl diligently combed through her long and silky hair. Aria showed off a bit on just how serious she was in her braiding skills. After a while, the two began to chat during their impromptu hairdressing session, and it was then that the Princess learned more about Link and their family.
Their mother was from an aristocratic family and married their father after he was knighted into the Royal Guard. Their mother had unfortunately passed away when Aria was two years old and Link was six, around the same time as the sudden passing of Zelda’s own mother. It saddened her to hear that both Aria and Link had experienced the same tragedy. Their father remained a widower and had both siblings stay with relatives in Hateno Village where they spent most of their childhood together. It wasn’t until their father was promoted to becoming the current Commander of the Royal Guards that he was able to provide for his two children and bring them back to Castletown.
Aria was enrolled in the Girl’s Academy in Castletown, which she then complained was the most annoying change she had to endure in her young life. Much to Zelda’s amused query, Aria went on about how strict the teachers were and how snobby the other girls in her class were.
“It’s not like the school back in Hateno where the teacher was this nice old lady and the kids were fun and knew how to play! I only went to the Castletown Academy because Dad said it was important to my education and all. Though I really like the Academy’s archery club. I always get very good grades there!” Aria told the Princess as she completed one half of the braid before starting the new one.
“I see. What about Link?” Zelda then asked.
“Link… he went to the Boy’s Academy before he was accepted to become a Knight’s squire. He always wanted to become a knight like Dad. And I guess Dad was able to pull a few strings to make it happen. It only lasted one year though.”
“How come?”
“Because Link found the Master Sword.”
Zelda’s expression dropped. “Oh… I see.”
"Yeah. And as they say, the rest is history,” Aria let out a sigh. Just as she finished with the Princess’ crown braids. “All done! What do you think?”
The Princess was then given a handheld mirror to inspect Aria’s braiding work and grinned. “Amazing! You did a fantastic job. Thank you!”
Aria grinned widely with pride, “You’re welcome, Zelda!”
Shortly afterwards, both ladies returned to the living space at the front of the house. By then, the tatami bed by the fireplace had been neatly folded onto one side along with the blankets and pillows. Link was already dressed in his blue Champion’s tunic and was pulling on his hooded Hylian cape. The Master Sword in her scabbard was waiting by the front door alongside the Champion’s other equipment.
“Are you ready to travel, Your Highness?” Link asked the Princess.
Zelda simply nodded, “Yes, we should head out soon.”
Link agreed with a soft "hyah." He then presented to the Princess a folded cape.
“Please, wear this. It is rather chilly outside.”
“Oh, I do not recall bringing along my own cape,” Zelda mused with surprise. She neglected to take her own travelling cloak as they did not anticipate that they would still be travelling this late until the final hours of twilight.
“That’s actually my cape! I told Link that you can borrow it so that you don’t get cold for the night ride back to Castletown!” Aria said out loud with a smile.
The Princess returned the smile with appreciation. “Thank you, Aria. I will make sure to return your cape to your brother.”
Aria grinned with sparkles in her eyes.
Link simply nodded with a muted glance as he strapped the Master Sword over his shoulders and secured it onto his back. “Will you be okay here by yourself, Aria?”
“No need to worry me, Link! I know how to take care of myself! And besides, the Cuccos will get to any intruder first before they even reach the door.”
Zelda noticed a slight smile from her appointed knight, whose crystal blue eyes softened. She watched as Link bent down to give his little sister a warm hug. Aria wrapped her arms around his shoulders with the biggest smile and said in a muffled voice. “Love you!”
The Princess could just hear Link say, “Love you too.”
Soon Zelda was back on her horse with the help of Link before he saddled onto his own. Aria waved her hand with the biggest grin to the two and shouted out, “Take care and stay safe!”
Zelda waved back to her with a big smile before the young girl and the Satoru residence disappeared behind the trees.
.
Shortly afterwards, both the Princess and her appointed knight were back on the road towards Castletown. The lingering scent of rain and dampened soil was present in the air.
It was the first hour of nightfall, with stars starting to glimmer in the dark blue skies above. Zelda looked up with wonder as her horse followed along Link’s. She always loved to stargaze, ever since she was a child. She had memorised every constellation and their origins in both Hylian and Sheikah teachings. The Princess could see the Mother Bear and the Bear Cub constellations to the north. Along with the Scales, the Maiden and the Dragon constellations were even visible.
Though with her sharp eyes, Zelda did notice a tiny glimmering light in the Dragon constellation that was not there before. For a brief moment, she could have sworn it was an actual dragon. Though she could not make out its entire appearance. It was so high up in the sky.
“Oh, Link! Do you see that?” she asked out loud before looking over to her knight and realised that he was not paying attention to her.
“Um, Link?”
Link broke out of his focus and quickly looked back to her with a startled look.
“Yes, Zelda- I mean--!” The knight then cleared his voice before settling back to his stoic facade, “Yes, Princess?”
Zelda frowned at this. “I was asking if you noticed anything in the night sky.”
The Hylian Champion was confused momentarily before looking up, trying to see what the Princess was referring to. “Hm, I do not see anything unusual in the sky, Your Highness. Was it a shooting star?”
Zelda paused for a brief moment before looking back up to the night. She cannot see where that unusual light silhouette was amongst the hundreds of the glimmering stars.
“Never mind. It probably was.”
.
Link quietly nodded and returned his focus back on the road.
The lights of Castletown and Hyrule Castle beckoning in the distance. Once they reached the entry gate of Castletown’s fortified walls, they were immediately greeted by the gate guards and then by members of the Royal Guard knights who had been waiting for their arrival.
Both of them quickly learned that due to the storm delaying their return from Zora’s Domain and with so little information about their whereabouts, King Rhoam began to worry for her safety and had both the Army and members of the Royal Guards on standby and were about to be sent out in search of them when the two appeared.
Zelda let out a soft, if apologetic, sigh. “My apologies for worrying all of you. Both myself and Champion Link are now here, safe and sound. Now, please take us to my father. I am sure that he is still stricken with worry until he sees me.”
“Of course, Your Highness.” The Royal Guard knight obliged and mobilised the rest to escort both Princess and Champion through Castletown and towards the Main Gate into Hyrule Castle’s grounds.
As the convoy of royal-cladded horses passed through the streets of Castletown, many of the local residents and curious onlookers quickly gathered along the road to see their Princess and their Hylian Champion. Both Zelda and Link standing out with their sky blue attire amongst the dark blue, red and gold of the Royal Guard uniforms.
“Many blessings to you, Your Highness!”
“May the Goddess smile upon you!”
“Hail to the Goddess’ Chosen!”
Zelda could only smile and wave as her people looked up to her. So many smiles, so many eyes. She then looked over to Link and could see that he was silent but looked more numb. Even as he gave nods and small waves to the onlookers they were passing by. Though Zelda could tell that it was more performative than anything else. Zelda frowned slightly, saddened deep down with the knowledge she obtained from Link’s sister about his behaviour. With hundreds of eyes on him and the pressure from carrying their hopes and expectations. Much like how she felt with her destiny as the Princess of Hyrule and the looming prophecy of Calamity Ganon’s return.
The royal entourage soon arrived at the Grand Entrance Gate at the foot of Hyrule Castle. Its grand steel doors slowly swing open as the gate guards announce the return of Princess Zelda and her appointed Knight, Champion Link.
The cobblestone paths were still damp from the storm earlier as their horses slowly followed along the winding road. The lampstands that lit the way emitted a soft amber light that gave the Castle’s dampened grounds an ambient golden glow around them. Along the way, they were greeted by the staff, servants and guards who bowed their heads to the Princess and the Hylian Champion.
Once they passed through the first Gatehouse, they were escorted towards the western Grand Pavilion of the Courtyard where they were greeted by none other than King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule. Zelda’s own father. He was standing in the sheltered area of the Pavilion, still in his regal uniform with an evening coat over his shoulders and surrounded by his Royal Guard knights. There was a stern look in his eyes as he silently observed the entourage come to a stop before him.
Link quickly hopped down from his horse and assisted Zelda off from her own mount.
The Princess quickly dusted off herself before she approached her father, with her appointed Knight following behind. Once she stood in front of him, Link along with the rest of the gathered men silently bowed their heads in respect to their sworn monarch and heir.
The King and the Princess.
“Hm, you are late.” King Rhoam addressed his daughter with his firm yet booming voice.
Zelda became stiff in her posture but remained calm as she replied, “Yes, father. I truly apologise for the delay and any worry that it has caused to you and everyone here.”
The bearded monarch simply nodded before his eyes glanced over to the Hylian Champion, who stood behind the Princess.
“I trust that our Chosen Hero and Champion has taken care of your safety during the duration of the storm. We were beginning to worry for your well-being. We have not received any word of your whereabouts since your departure from Zora's Domain this morning."
“Yes. Champion Link has taken care of my safety just fine, father. We were able to find shelter in time to wait out the storm. And as you have experienced, the storm lasted much longer than…anyone anticipated.”
“Hm, you were not hurt during the storm’s passing?”
Zelda briefly hesitated but quickly shook her head, “No. I am fine, father.”
The King paused, looking down to his daughter. His eyes briefly shifted between her and the Chosen Knight behind her before concluding with a quiet sigh of relief. “As long as you are doing well. That will suffice, my dear."
The King then turned to the Champion behind her. Link could sense his strong gaze on him and silently stood up straight. His crystal eyes hardened as his monarch addressed him directly.
“Today’s delay will be overlooked. You have completed your task as admirably as was permitted, Champion Link. You may take your leave for tonight.”
The Hylian Champion silently nodded.
Princess Zelda looked back to Link and was able to say something to him when her father, King Rhoam dismissed everyone with his booming voice. And on cue, all knights and castle staff members began to disperse from the courtyard. She spotted her appointed knight guiding their horses away towards the Castle’s stable house and was able to run up to him when she was stopped by her father. His arm on her back as he guided her inside. A pair of Royal Guard bodyguards followed behind them.
“Come now, my dear. You must be exhausted from your journey. I’ll have the kitchen staff prepare hot meals for you.”
Zelda stopped, looking up to her father and then briefly glancing over her shoulder, beyond the entrance doorway. Link had already disappeared with the crowd. Any words she wanted to tell him had disappeared with his presence.
“Zelda?”
“Um, my apologies, father.” The Princess sighed quietly before looking up to him. “I will retire to my bedroom. You are right. I am very much exhausted from our prolonged journey home. I would like to have my supper there as well.”
This surprised the King, perplexed at first by his daughter’s request before nodding, “Very well. I will inform the staff of your request.”
“Thank you, father.”
Princess Zelda and King Rhoam exchanged glances. Their expressions were muted, if unsure. Even in private moments like these, it was difficult for them to break away from their royal roles within these Castle walls. King Rhoam was about to speak when the Princess’ ladies-in-waiting appeared to escort her back to her bedroom.
There was much to say, but that had to be delayed for another time.
“Alright then, Zelda. I wish you a very good night.”
“And you too, father. I wish you a good rest. Without worry,” Zelda then added with a smile.
King Rhoam returned the gesture. He then leaned forward to give his daughter a kiss on her forehead. He could hear her soft giggles as he did so, just like when she was his little girl.
He stepped back and watched as Zelda turned to meet with her ladies-in-waiting before they followed her down the hallway towards the west wing of the Castle. Once she disappeared around the corner, the King took a deep breath and retired to his own private wing for the night with his loyal Royal Guard bodyguards following behind. In his thoughts, he wondered whether in his duties, he may have been too hard, unbecoming of being a father. Such were the burdens that came with being King.

There was no time for second guessing, no time to come up with another plan. They had to fight, plain and simple.
Link was confident he would fight until his last breath.
“We can do this, okay?” he muttered to Zelda, squeezing her fingers. “Together. Like we’re meant to.”
Zelda’s green eyes bore into his, wide and fearful. Still, she nodded. “Together.”
i cracked up sorry ONE OF THEM IS 🙏 really sweet story except for the tragedy as it is one (among other things)
