Handcolored picture postcard of Main Street in Prattsville, New York, circa 1905. The town is named after Zadock Pratt (1790-1871), a prominent local who established the largest tannery in the world at the time. The town was established to provide housing for the necessary labor force. Pratt later went into politics and was a congressman.
Before entering the town from the east along NY Route 23, Pratt Rock is a unique park and picnic on a hillside opposite Schoharie Creek, worth the time it takes to wander around in. It commemorates Pratt with a bevy of bas-relief stone carvings and a historical display. While I can’t corroborate it online, Pratt was instrumental in getting the White House rebuilt after it was burned in the War of 1812. This unsubstantiated tidbit was (as I recall) on the historical display at Pratt Rock.

SUMMER IN THE CATSKILLS NY 2017
Spent a couple days Upstate New York photographing the people and town of Prattsville which was devastated in the Hurricane Irene 5 years ago by flooding waters. The story also took me to Albany where I photographed the resulting weather forecasting technology that was developed and implemented in the wake of the disaster. Read the full store here.
