Prankvertising
Pranktvertising is a marketing ploy that can anywhere from humorous and light hearted to frightening for shock factor. The main point is to be clever and to get a reaction out of the audience. Whether this is to get a message across or to promote a brand. Either way it can be a very successful marketing tactic.Â
One that I found that I think is very successful (and also horribly cruel to those who are unfortunate enough to be caught by it) is #PubLooShocker by the Department for Transport. It’s about drink driving and the consequences it can have. It focuses on people (young men in particular) that are at a pub having a drink and perhaps thinking about driving home intoxicated. It very much takes the scare/shock factor tactic which is very effective in this case.Â
Prankvertising
This week I am looking at different formats of campaign advertisements. Â Today I did a little research on Prankvertising and what the advantages can be. Â One of the main things I found with Prankvertising is the anticipation, knowing what is going to happen, however the entertainment was watching it all unfold. Â Some used comedy, others used scare tactics or just pure shock. Â It creates excitement in advertising and has a sense of something new, a new kind of way of advertising and not making it so mainstream and at times boring to watch. Â It engages you and keeps you watching until the very end, I felt like I didn't want to stop watching in case I missed something at the end.
Here is an Adobe Photoshop Prank advertisement . Adobe are promoting one of their Creative Day Events. Â Here they have used their product and members of the public at bus stops to grab our attention. Â In just 3 days Adobe received over 9 millions views on Youtube of this form of advertising. Â WOW!
Another one I found was by Pepsi, I found this Pepsi Prankvertising just pure entertainment. Â Where pro NBA players are disguised as the elderly and pretty much kick ass against these younger guys on the court. Â A great use of comedy is used here to help promote the Pepsi brand.
IKEA Late Night Trading Hours - Happy HalloweenÂ
I loved the Ikea one as I am a sucker for scary movies. Â the advertisement is inspired by the movie The Shining, it is advertising their extended trading hours.Â

Spooky Car Wash Prank Will Work You Up Into a Lather
Spooky Car Wash Prank Will Work You Up Into a Lather
For most of us, the scariest thing about a car wash is the price tag, but this video from Ford gives you another reason to be afraid As a Halloween prank, Ford enlisted some actors in scary masks to swarm people’s vehicles inside a car wash. Between that and the spooky lighting, drivers get predictably freaked out. Most also start guffawing though, as they quickly realize that it’s a prank See…

North Face Explores Prankvertising in new Disappearing Floor Ad
I'm a fan of prankvertising videos. From Jeff Gordon's stint as a heavy-footed test driver for Pepsi to the coffee shop Carrie, these videos (when done well with an original take to it) make for some real entertaining fare that blend both the shocking and the hilarious, a mix most brands wish they could find in their ads.
This week, North Face joined the fray with their own prankvertising video over in South Korea, as unsuspecting customers were faced with a disappearing floor, a rock climbing wall, and 30-seconds to take a leap of faith for a brand new North Face jacket just outside of their grasp. See it all unfold in the video below:
This is the 2nd time they've attempted to go viral with this style of ad, with last year's Snow Room video released almost exactly one year ago. That video, which has been viewed just over 2M times in a year, has already by surpassed by this month's video which has seen over 2.5M views and counting (thanks to pickup by several North American websites including Adweek and Refinery29).
Although I wish the video was in English, or at least had English subtitles, I realize that it was designed for their Korean audience. Fortunately, the content and context of the video are universal, showing that no matter what the story is being told in your ad, as long as it's good and compelling, it will find people.Â
This video also makes me wonder if a stunt like this - one that puts customer in a situation to do something physical within a store - could ever happen in the United States. I'm sure there are ways to pull it off, but I just can't seem to recall anything similar to this taking place here America.
Regardless, this ad is a really great example of prankvertising in action with global appeal. Like the customers featured in the video, North Face took a leap of faith on this one and nailed it.
What do you think of the ad? What other good prankvertising videos have you seen?
