So I was thinking it over and I must say, the Toronto Maple Leas’ PR play is amazing.

Lose in the 2nd round, but reassure the entire fanbase that no rash decision will be made and that their goal is to bring back the entire core, disappointing some of those who want changes, but also reassuring the rest of the fans.

Then show a commitment to negotiating with the core to bring them back.

Afterwards, sign Reaves, Bertuzzi and Domi to massive deals, exciting the fanbase with the promise culture change and toughness.

And then let slip that Nylander wants a 10+ M contract, and let the fanbase realize by themselves that hey, they really need that cap space, and it won’t be such a bad thing to lose Nylander, especially if this comes in exchange for that trio of ‘toughness’.

To full win the fanbase over, all they need now is to land a great trade for Nylander but that might be a bit more difficult with how no team, except for the Coyotes, the Blackhawks and the Ducks have space to accommodate him (and the Leafs cannot take back any cap space in return.)
