Here are the final (post bowl games) 2017 season conference records in out-of-conference games versus Power-5 teams.
As you can see in the first table above (click on table to expand for better viewing)...the B1G, whose champion was ironically not invited to the playoff, had the best record in OOC games vs. the Power-5 for the 2017 season. Every other conference, yes including the SEC, was pretty pedestrian against Power-5 competition.
Versus the 5 BEST teams in a particular Power-5 conference
Pure numbers are nice, but how did each conference do against the BEST of the P5? (not just the lower-tier teams in a P5 conference)
The second table above is each conference’s final overall record in out-of-conference games versus any of the 5 highest-ranked teams in a Power-5 conference (according to the final DPS rankings).
For example, the American Conference (AAC) was 1-4 against the best of the P5, and that 1 win was UCF’s “National Championship” win over Auburn, the 3rd best team in the SEC according to the DPS.
As you can see, the PAC-12 finished the season without a win over a team that finished the season as one of the 5 best teams in P5 conference. (Note: Texas finished 7th-best in the Big 12)
The B1G was best in that metric also, going 5-4 against the best of the P5.
