Main Verse (untagged) Eight [fc: Paul McGann] was too gentle a spirit, and between at least 450 years of continuous conflict followed by feeling the telepathic presence of his people wiped out during The Moment, Something inside him Broke. When he came to in the console room of his beloved TARDIS, Nine [fc: Christopher Eccleston] loathed himself so much that for a (long) time he could not bear to see himself. He spends an undetermined amount of time travelling, occasionally for the sake of it, but more often than not throwing himself into the midst of Events and hoping that he wouldn’t made it out alive. After surviving an event that he really shouldn’t have (even with his superior Time Lord physiology), The Doctor begrudgingly accepts that the Universe isn’t Done with him yet.

But going back to travelling like he did before the War didn’t feel like a viable option just yet: there were too many things that could set off his PTSD, and he was still a bit too sensitive to low-level telepathic stimuli. He needed time to sort out his head, but the amount of time he needed would either drive him insane or back to suicide. He couldn’t do it alone and he couldn’t do it as he was. After some time contemplating what the best course of action would be, Nine reaches out to his old friend, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and makes arrangements to work his old job at UNIT for a few years while chameleon arched as a human. He would get the help he needed while also giving himself more time to heal.

Once the agreed upon amount of time had passed, the Brig opens the watch and brings The Doctor back. While still not great, time with his friends and at his post as scientific advisor and sometimes alien diplomat, for the first time in this incarnation and since being pulled into the War, he felt slightly more like himself. The urge to be The Doctor, to get back in touch with what that meant, was at least stronger than his self-loathing and wanting to die, which meant that he could move on. With hearts-felt thanks, he parted ways with the Brig and resumed travelling. He goes on a couple of adventures before finding himself back in London and trying to thwart the Nestene Consciousness’ invasion of Earth. It is during this time that he meets Rose, and the rest, as they say, is History.  

Now, while the Doctor says he’s 900 years old, he actually doesn’t have a clue. He’s pretty sure he’s much older (it was around seven hundred that he stopped counting and that was three or four regenerations ago and several centuries at least), not to say anything of the Time War and the fact that time itself was used as ammunition and seriously messed with his aging. He settled on 900 after regenerating because it sounded better

In terms of canon, everything from Classic!Who TV series to the movie to the end of Nine’s Season applies. Nine will recognize Ten [David Tennant], Eleven [Matt Smith], Twelve [Peter Capaldi], Thirteen [Jodie Whittaker], Fourteen [David Tennant], and Fifteen [Ncuti Gatwa] as his future regenerations, but the cracks in time/ wedding of River Song/ Gallifrey Falls No More/ the Flux/ the Timeless Child plot-points do not. These events are not canon in my main verse. John Hurt’s Doctor does not exist in this verse. As a general rule I don’t include the novels/audios just because I haven’t read/heard them, with the exception of Eight’s audios pre-Day of The Doctor.

v: still this daft old face Nine does not regenerate into Ten after the events of Game Station and the Bad Wolf, but Rose is in a sort of coma due to her time spent bonded to the Heart of the TARDIS. She does eventually wake from it, and life goes on as per usual for the Doctor. Events from Seasons 2-4 including Doomsday/Journey’s End can/will happen to Nine in this verse, but otherwise main verse canon rules still apply.

v: TV Canon  Events of the tv show up to present date are canon. Please note however, that this verse is either by request or for canon muses from Moffat and Chibnall’s era only.

v: just one heart (human AU) This verse applies to Nine being human in any one of the following scenarios:

Following the events of Journey’s End, The Meta-crisis degenerates/takes on the form of his previous self (aka, Nine). Still the Doctor, still the same memories, just one heart and no more regenerations;

The Doctor has used the Chameleon Arch and is hiding in human form from something or someone (depending on what was plotted), alias: John Gallagher; or

John Gallagher was born in a Manchester town, where he grew up and went to school. His mother was Irish, and his father is originally from the south of England. He speaks several languages (including Irish), is an avid reader, and has a love for the night sky.

Note: The details to Nine’s human back story are intentionally vague, and will vary from thread to thread depending on what vibe I get from Nine. He is generally either a teacher or some form of healthcare professional.

v: the force be with you (star wars AU) Theta Nine of House Lungbarrow was born force-sensitive into a society that did not believe in powers greater than what science and engineering could produce - including hokey religions like that of the Jedi. Force sensitives born on Gallifrey usually wound up being ostracized fairly early on if they did not learn to hide it. So hide it he did (though he still tried to figure out how it worked in secret), and focused on engineering and tech (which he had a certain talent for).

Unhappy in the strict and rigid society of his home world and eager to explore the galaxy, though, it wasn’t long before he became restless. He decided to run away when still rather young by negotiating passage on a vessel in exchange for work. He would spend a few decades hopping around the galaxy, careful about how and when he used the Force, but grew cocky when he realized he could influence a lot of people much easier than he could on Gallifrey. Until he tried it on another force sensitive, and had a moment of panic. Amused by his attempt, however, the force-sensitive - a Jedi sentinel, as it turned out - befriends him and eventually offers to train him, even though Theta Nine is well beyond the traditional age of a padawan. Theta is initially wary, but cautiously accepts the offer.

Affiliation: Sentinel/Grey Jedi (after Order 66)

Lightsaber colour: yellow (primary), green (shoto)

NOTE: Time Lords do not exist in this universe. Gallifreyans do, but they only retain the physiological and biological characteristics of their race: respiratory bypass, double hearts, accelerated healing factor, and higher resistances to certain toxins/radioactivity. They have only one life, but are extremely long-lived compared to a human’s life-span.

v: an aos si (fantasy AU) Cillian Donal is a fae with a soft spot for humans who has been wandering the Earth for longer than he cares to remember. Seeing as how names have power, he trusts his true name to no one, and goes under the assumed name Cian O'Niall (translating literally to “ancient of clouds”). He is bound to the air and sky (hence the name), and can take the form of a raven. Like most fae, he is sensitive to iron (it is one of the few things that can kill him).

His fondness for humans has made him a bit of a pariah amongst his kind, so he mostly travels in the human world and keeps to himself. He is, however, known to help the mortals in particular circumstances, and has even held friendships with some.

As the centuries roll past, he becomes increasingly disenchanted with Humans. Oh, he still has a soft spot for them and is still fascinated by their world, but he has little patience for their arrogance and pettiness. As benign as he may appear, he is ancient and powerful, and his anger, once roused, is as terrible as a raging thunderstorm.

v: to boldly go (Star Trek AU) Ensign Theta Nine of House Lungbarrow is a top notch engineer who should have been promoted several times over, except he keeps refusing each time he’s offered one. He doesn’t care much for ranks and procedure, all he wants is to tend to whichever ship or station he happens to be on, tinker in his free time, and explore the vast unknown that is space, so as to see as many wonders as possible.
