Warren
Warren woke, still on the ground, probably only a few seconds later. There was a horrible tearing sensation down his back and he cursed, struggling to walk instead of being dragged.
âWhoah whoah rich prick, hold yourâhang onto me, dumbass.â Coal had him in one hand by most of the shirt, which was riding up under Warrenâs armpits. The other arm crossed Warrenâs welted back, and Coalâs hand locked around Warrenâs waist. It hurt.
Warren gripped Coal by the side of his shirt, weakly trying to hang on as he was dragged back into the sleeping quarters.Â
âGet all your screams out now," Coal said. âIf yer gonna do it later, trust me, these guys pack a punch, and they can make it worse.â
âKill me," Warren groaned softly.
âYou get over it," Coal grunted, kicking a couple pillows onto a bed and then, with surprising grace and ease, leveraging Warren onto the setup, so that when his legs gave out, he fell softly under Coalâs guiding hand, almost painlessly.
When his body realized he wasnât in immediate danger now, the pain caught up fast. Warren turned his face into the pillow so Coal couldnât see the faces he was making as he struggled not to start crying again.Â
âReally are blind as a Bane," Coal muttered, rummaging around in a cupboard nearby.Â
Warren watched Coal return with bandages and stuff out of the corner of his eye. He didnât resist as Coal put stuff on him, clenching his fists under the pillows and forcing himself to stay still even though the touch burned and stung.
âYâknow I told you notta do that cocky shit," Coal said through a smile. âI thought you said youâre smart. Whatâs the point of asking for advice if youâre not gonna take it?â
Warrenâs fists were clenched tightly.
âI tried.â
âYeah, well you failed.â Coal gently tugged the blanket up over the bandages. âLetâs see, yâtalked back, yâsnitchedââ
âI did not!â
âYeah, you defended someone. Now Canineâs gonna be Benjiâs next target. Same thing," Coal said, still holding up two fingers.
Warren cursed softly.
â...looked âim in the eye,â Coalâs third finger went up.
âThat wasnât in the rules!â
Coal held up a fourth finger.
âAnd, yer, uh, still tall.â
Warren finally glanced at Coal.
There was a pause as Coalâs frozen, neutral expression and his four fingers stared back at Warren.Â
Then Warren saw itâCoal had tilted his head ever-so-slightly. Warren gave a small scoff, and Coal chuckled, somehow barely moving his face at all.
âItâsâso thatâs how you do it," Warren muttered.
âWelcome, lordling.â Coal winked, walking toward the door with the lantern in hand.
âCoal," Warren said.
Coal stopped.
âKnowing who I amâŚâ He hesitated. âYouâre notâŚâ
âMm. And Iâm probly the only one," Coal said. âButcha know, poor dumbass, you just lost your sister. Iâm not gonna hassle you.â
Warren felt that like a punch in the gut, turning his face away. The lantern in Coalâs hand lowered as the man turned.
âHey, maybe not though. Maybe sheâll come back as a vampire.âÂ
Warren didnât look up to see if he was joking this time. He remained silent as the lantern-light faded out of the room along with Coalâs near-inaudible footsteps.

CW: Hypothermia, recovery from abuse, brief mention of counting calories/not eating enough, dumb cute caretakery shit I said I wouldn't write much of
Word count: 2950
Characters: Warren/Aziphem
"Aren't you cold?"
Of course he was, hell Aziphem got chilled when the temperatures dropped below 65. One of the many joys of being a demon.
"I'm fine." It had been his constant answer whenever Warren pressed on how he was doing. What was he supposed to say? Yes, he was cold out here. There was a threat of snow that night, only a dusting but still dipping below freezing. But if he told the human he would, of course, get the offer to come inside with mentions of hot food and warm blankets.
Not that Aziphem didn't want those. He had stolen one of Warren's blankets when he first arrived, making a little nest for himself in the shed behind the cabin they were hiding out in until the hunt for him cooled down.
No what he didn't want was that-- gentleness. The kind offers, the care, the sympathy. It made him feel... pathetic. Didn't Warren know what he was? He didn't deserve those things, just wanted them. Which was why he stole them. He deserved to be able to steal them, not be gifted them.
"Alright, well, there is a couch, I could sleep on that and give you the bed-"
"No."
"... You could have the couch?"
"No."
"You can... say the word no again?"
Aziphem opened his mouth to speak, but caught it before the word left his lips, only responding with a glare. Stupid human, with his stupid crooked grin, and the stupid way his stupid eyes crinkled and his stupid little laugh-
"Can I get you a jacket at least?"
"I have a jacket." Aziphem pulled his thin flannel closer around his shoulders. He had also stolen this, from Warren's closet. Why wasn't the human mad at him for that?
"Have you ever been up north for a winter Azzi?" Warren sighed, sitting down a respectful distance away from the demon on the porch step. Still, Aziphem scooted himself away. He didn't like the human so close. He didn't know why the human wanted to be that close.
"No. Not really. I saw some snow at-" He paused, twisting his fingers. "When he brought me to his house sometimes. That's it."
Maybe that was why he hated being given things. That angel, so gentle and kind when he 'behaved'. When he let it happen. He would get gifts, treats, allowed to sleep in a bed instead of on a cell, given clothes, food, and all of it came with the caveat that he had to allow himself to be poked, prodded, and pulled apart on those stainless steel tables. Accepting things gave the giver power over him.
Warren, thankfully knowing not to press, nodded. He had made it clear with the human early on that he was not to ask about the angels and what they did to him.
"Well, up here, it gets really fucking cold. And I know-" He held out his finger to stop the demon's predicted interruption. "It won't kill you permanently. But is it really worth the risk?"
"I'll be fine. I have a place to sleep."
"In the fucking shed?" Finally, Warren was getting frustrated. Aziphem knew how to deal with frustrated people.
"Yeah, and you want to stop me?" The demon bared his teeth, ready for whatever reaction followed.
"Yes actually, I do!" Good! Yell at him; that Aziphem could work with! Ok so it... wasn't a yell. But close enough.
" I could kill you so easily- and you think you can stop me?" He snarled, lunging just enough to get the human to scramble back away. With teeth snapping between his words, he glared at Warren. "You want to take that chance?"
Warren, to his credit, didn't look as scared as Aziphem had hoped. He looked more... disappointed. Muttering a few words in Spanish that Aziphem couldn't understand, the human stood up, shaking his head.
"I'll leave the door unlocked if you change your mind." Warren slammed the door behind him, leaving the demon alone again.
Good! He had won that encounter! Warren didn't get to hold the power of helping over him. It was a hollow happiness, but still one Aziphem relished. Making his way out to the small, spider infested shed, he curled up in his stolen blanket, munching on a stolen granola bar. Maybe tomorrow he would go hunting, show Warren he didn't need him. Why was he still here anyways? He didn't need the human's help!
Well-- he kinda did. Warren had found them this hiding spot, and these were Warren's clothes he was wearing. And Warren had driven them out here. And... patched up the bullet wounds Haziel had left him with in his escape. And was currently keeping an eye on his blood work since the drugs Kotarou had given him were causing withdrawls now that he was off them...
The more he thought about it, the more he hated it. Why did that human want him around? Why had the human always been so--- nice?! He didn't know what to do with nice, because nice was temporary and contingent on him not stepping out of line. Nice was fake and a tool to get him to do what someone else wanted.
Aziphem stewed over these thoughts for a few hours, watching the last bit of light turn blue, then black in the dark forest. Alone in the dark, he normally felt so safe.
Now he just felt fucking cold.
Shivering in his blanket, Aziphem pulled the flannel in tight. Warren had been right, this was not a jacket. And he wanted nothing more than to go inside. But that would be losing, and he would not submit to Warren and give him what he wanted. Even if that was what he also wanted.
Through the cracks in the shed walls, he could see the first bit of snow starting to fall, starkly contrasting against the pitch black sky. It was so peaceful, watching each flake slowly drop in the near windless night.
But that cold was anything but peaceful. The flannel and the blanket were hardly enough, the numbness setting into his fingers and slowly working up his arms. How long had he been unable to feel his toes? The dilemma was becoming more and more apparent, he wasn't going to last the night out here. Maybe he could sneak in, sleep in a closet, and sneak out before Warren woke up? No if the human caught him he would never live that down. He had to manage out here.
Of course he had been a little concerned when the shivering started, but he was more now that it had stopped. The basic drive to stay alive was kicking in, but he felt- tired. Like the night was starting to eat up the now heavier snow, leaving only darkness around him.
He needed to get up. He hated that he did but he needed to get warm. Stumbling out of the shed, he looked around for the house. Which direction was it? He wasn't more than 300 feet away, but with the dark trees, snowy night and with his brain addled by cold, he couldn't remember which way-
Right. He was certain it was a right. It had to be a right. Stumbling in the direction, Aziphem picked his way over the dusted ground cover, bare feet crunching frozen plants beneath him. The house had to be just up ahead, he would sneak in, steal a victory granola bar, and sneak out before Warren woke. Hell, he would steal himself a whole ass cookie if he didn't get caught.
There wasn't a clearing between him and the house. Aziphem stumbled into the small gap in the trees, looking at the definitely unfamiliar terrain. He had been so sure it was right, was it left? The snow had been coming down harder, masking his tracks as he turned around. He was lost, cold, and afraid.
For a moment, the demon circled the clearing, flicking his tail in the now blustering night night. Had he walked past that fallen tree? Or that stump. He felt dizzy, head pounding and body weak. If he died out here, the angels would find his energy signature from the revival. Would they find him before-
"Warren?" The last word of his thoughts escaped his lips, barely piercing the snow muffled night. "Warren? WARREN!"
Stupid human, making him need him. Making him want him to come to his rescue when he couldn't help himself. Aziphem was weak and pathetic and he hated himself every time he screamed that name into the darkness, pleading with a God who had abandoned him that by some miracle the human would hear him.
Shaking legs gave way underneath him, forcing him to the ground. The snow was no longer a dusting, now pelting him from all sides as he curled up on the ground. That familiar cold filled his limbs and his memories.
Ice cold water in his lungs.
Fighting his restraints as the ice froze around him.
Death. Revival. Death. Revival. The time between getting longer and longer until he inevitably would not wake up, frozen in a constant stasis.
He was going to die. And they would find him. And they would freeze him. And it would all be his fault for not letting Warren help him. Warren- Warren-
"Aziphem?"
Aziphem instinctively flinched away from the hand now brushing him off, but gave in to the arms as they pulled him in. Sticky hot human- he hated the touch but as the thick jacket wrapped around him, warmed and thick with the scent of Warren he buried himself into it.
"What are you doing?! It's too cold out here, you're covered in snow!" The human pulled him into the treeline, stripped down to his underlayer with his jacket wrapped around Aziphem.
"I -- got lost." He mumbled, pulling the jacket close around him. Not past the stump or the fallen tree, just a small break in the forest he would not have noticed in his cold delirium. The human was holding tight to him and he fucking hated it, but he was far too cold to fight back.
"Where were you going?" Warren had this way of being firm with him, but not in the way Kotarou had, ordering him to strip or kneel or shut up. The human would ask him these questions, pointing out that he was self sabotaging by making him admit it.
"I wasn't running away if that's what you're asking me." He tried to pull the jacket in with numb fingers, the fabric slipping through his grasp. Warren pulled the jacket on for him, helping him get his hands through. Any other day he would have snapped, demanding to do it himself, but numb fingers were useless here.
How had he gotten so far from the cabin? The walk felt long, Aziphem tripping over his numb feet and falling on Warren for support. At least when the human caught him there was no teasing, no gentle cooing that he was safe, just silently picking him back up so he could keep walking. He did have to give in eventually, leaning heavily on his caretaker as they trudged up the last hill and into the cabin.
"You're going to go warm up.' Warren commanded, once again in that firm way that Aziphem knew meant that this was not a choice and that the human would in fact make sure he got warm one way or another. "There's blankets by the stove. I'm going to make you some tea and soup. Did you eat anything for dinner?"
"Is now really the time to be grilling me on my eating habits?" The demon half-heartedly snarked, curling up in the warm nest of blankets near the wood burning stove that warmed the house. Wow, this was- worth the humiliation of submitting to Warren's wishes.
"Calories are important to making sure you can warm yourself up." Warren sighed, pulling a pot of something from the ice chest and placing it on that stove alongside a kettle. "Please? I just want to help you, so if you could just work with me-"
"A granola bar." Aziphem said quietly, pulling the blankets around himself. "And I am getting warm. Happy?"
"Incredibly." Warren turned to look at the demon. "Well, no, you probably should be eating more than that... right? I still don't know your anatomy- er- I don't know how to best take care of you- I know you don't like doctor terms but damn it I am a doctor I don't know what else to say."
"I should be eating more, but it is not a problem yet. I was planning to hunt something tomorrow. Just say you don't know how I work."
"Alright- I don't know how you work."
That was the one thing Aziphem appreciated about Warren's type of care. He... listened. If Aziphem told him no, he rarely pressured. When he told the doctor he didn't like hearing medical terms, Warren did his best to change the way he described his care. Imbalanced brain chemicals and abnormal bloodwork were what an angel would use to justify forcing him to be medicated. 'Whack ass shit' was what Warren would grumble and scratch his stupid gorgeous curly hair about when something came back out of the normal.
"I need to eat more than you do, averaging closer to 3000 calories per day. But consider it more... 12000 calories every four days? I can go longer without food."
Fishing out his small notebook from the snow pants, Warren scribbled something. Aziphem hated how it made him feel observed... but caved to the doctor on this disagreement long ago.
"Got it." The human did a few moments of quiet math, fingers counting to match what he was doing in his head.
"I'm under, I know, I was going to make up for it tomorrow." He sighed. "Catch a deer or something."
"Not in that storm. Light dusting my ass, it's threatening to break 3 feet before morning."
"I've hunted in worse. And it's not like I have a choice-"
"Yes. Yes you do." Warren pulled the pot of soup from the stove, foregoing the bowl and handing Aziphem the pot. "You can eat my god damn cooking."
This was defeat, but damn did defeat smell like a rich venison stew. Aziphem poked at it with a spoon for a moment before quietly taking a few bites.
"And while you're at it, you can wear my damn clothes and sleep on my damn bed." Warren continued, sitting down in front of Aziphem with arms crossed. "Or the couch, I will make an exception for that since I know you-"
"What do you want from me?"
The question must have thrown Warren off, pausing with his mouth open.
"What do I... want from you?"
"Yes. I know you're trying to get something from this. And I won't give it to you, you'll have to fight me for it."
"Azzi-" Warren just... looked exhausted. "I want you to eat, sleep in a warm bed, and maybe put on some fucking shoes outside, but I can compromise on that."
"Bullshit- I know how this goes." The demon pulled his blankets tight around him, creating a defensive wall. Soup inside that defensive wall of course, even if he didn't want to accept it, now that he had it it was a precious resource he needed to defend. "You act all nice, give me things, then take them away when I say no. I know how this goes, and I won't let you give me things if you're going to use them to control me."
"Aziphem--- Azzi-- no. I'm not going to do that."
"Allow me to reiterate- Bull. Shit."
"Look, I know you won't just-- believe me. So let's talk about this rationally. If I tried to take that jacket from you, what would you do?"
What would be do? It was Warren's jacket, but he had it now. It was a tool he now needed to survive.
"Tell you to not fucking touch me and get away from you?"
"Alright, and if I tried to get you, would I be able to?"
"No. I am faster, stronger, and more resilient than you." Ignoring the fact that he had been dying alone in the woods only minutes earlier...
"Exactly. You can beat me in a fight if you need to. So can I take those things away from you?"
"... no."
"So what can I gain from giving you things?"
Aziphem didn't have an answer, instead choosing to silently hide in his defeat blankets and eat his defeat soup. Did Warren really want nothing from him?
"Then why are you helping me?"
"I wake up every day and ask myself that question." There was that stupid crooked grin again... "You got me roped into this mess, figured I might as well ride it out with you. Besides, I'm a doctor, a real one mind you, and it's my job to help people."
Stupid human, he wasn't a person, he was a creature. And a violent one at that. When would Warren figure that out? Aziphem knew he would eventually, but for now... for now he could accept this defeat and let Warren give him these things. Even if they would be taken away, even if he knew he would be hurt or abandoned for it.
Right now, he just wanted that stupid human, his stupidly delicious soup, his stupid jacket that smelled like him, his stupid crooked grin and the stupid way he made Aziphem feel safe, even if he couldn't trust it.
Writing something post-whump and uh... let's just say things are gonna get intresting...

"And the award for No. 1 Hero is, as it has been for the last 11 years, NM!" the speaker announced.
I forced myself to keep my nerves under control. In just a few moments, they would ask if anyone had any objections, and I would raise my hand. I subconsciously searched for the hand of one of my teammates standing next to me and grabbed on to it. S ended up being said teammate and gave me a comforting squeeze.
The speaker finished up their speech which mostly boiled down to 'obviously he deserves this because it's him'. "Now, for something that I'm almost certain is useless, does anyone in the crowd object to this?" they asked.
I squeezed my eyes shut as I forced my hand as high as it could go. I heard a few gasps and murmurs. When I opened my eyes, most people were looking at me. "IâŚI have an objection," I said, trying to make myself sound as confident as possible.

TIMELINE: Post-No Matter What, one year after Oliver Branchâs death
When he comes back into his room, two plates layered with Jakeâs hash browns and fried eggs balanced in his hands, Laken is up and pulling their binder on over their head, carefully working the tight black fabric down to where the hem sits just at their ribcage. Their back is to him, and like always Chris is struck at the way theyâre so utterly, amazingly perfect.
âOooh, is that breakfast?â They glance over their shoulder at him, eyeliner smudged at the corners of their eyes, nose ring catching the sunlight coming through the blinds. âIâm starving. Whatâd Jake make us?â
âUm... hash-... hashbrowns and, and, and eggs. Over-easy, like, like you-you-you like.â Chris sets their plate down. âOver hard for, for me.â
âYeah, âcause youâre a wimp,â Laken teases, and if it werenât for his pounding headache and how even after three glasses of water his tongue still feels like dry dead weight in his mouth, it would be like last night never even happened.
But-... it did.
âPlease, please tell me he at least gave you-â
âHot sauce? Here, here, here you go.â He digs the little bottle full of fiery red from a pocket and tosses it to them. They sigh in gratitude and relief.
âExcellent. Thanks. Oooh, coffee.â Laken takes a drink, makes a face. âLukewarm.â
âWell, itâs, itâs, itâs been here awhile, I can get-... I can get fresh-â
âNo, thatâs cool. Thanks for it. Iâm just gonna drink it really fast. Youâre probably on cup, what, four? Can you feel the movement of the earth yet?â
âNo, but, but, I could-... last night.â Chris presses his lips together. Things are too much a blur - he knows he drank too much, he knows what he tried to get Laken to do. He knows that-
That he misses his Sir, is sad that heâs gone so far that Chris could never go back to him, slide back into Baldur, give up and forget himself completely if he wanted to. Not that he does. But-...
He knows that Oliver is still dead, and that he drank himself sick trying to forget and remember him, and he tried to be good for Laken, and...
âIâm, um, sor-... sorry about, about last night,â He says as they sit cross-legged on his bed, wearing the binder and a pair of boxer short underwear. They look up at him, a bit of heavy black hair falling over their forehead, the shaved sides short enough to see hints of scalp through.Â
Theyâre handsome, and beautiful.
And heâs a broken toy.
We love you, Chris, whether you like it or not. Youâre stuck with a couple of fucked-up brothers and Laken, too. Weâre all choosing you.
Jakeâs words downstairs echo in his mind and he tries to stand himself up taller, to look stronger. Like someone who doubts himself less than he really does.
âItâs okay,â Laken says, softly.
âNo, itâs, itâs itâs not. Youâre not... you werenât supposed to, to, to see me like... that.â Chris sits down next to them and slumps a little, hands between his knees. âIâm supposed to, to to not-... to not do that any, um, anymore.â
âYeah, well. You did. Shit pops back up even if you want it gone. Iâm still here.â Laken reaches over and takes one of his hands in theirs, pulls it up to their lips, presses a kiss to the back of it. Their hand and lips are warm. Warmer than Chris ever is.
âI just-... donât, um, do that. Normally. And I havenât, havenât tried to to to-â
You can choose to be good or choose to be hurt, trainee
â-come on to someone in... in, in, in a long time.â
âI know. I know you, Chris. Not-... everything, and Iâll never ask to know what you donât want to tell me, but... I know you.â Laken kisses his hand again. âI know that youâre kind, and gentle, and climb trees and do backflips and love that stupid show about the fucking French Revolution even though, objectively speaking, what is the fucking appeal, they donât even win-... Chris, that question does not require an answer... but I know you. And itâs-all-gone-to-shit-you is still you you. And thatâs who I love.â
Chris smiles, a little, down at his feet. âI, I, I love you, too.â
âGood. Now letâs eat these hashbrowns before theyâre colder than my coffee.â
âItâs not, not, not my fault you slept so late.â
âChris, I was up taking care of you, it is literally your fault-â
He takes the hot sauce right out of their hand and they laugh and throw themself at him to get it back.
Character A tilting character Bâs chin up to get a better look at their face and the evidence of the fight. A delicately thumbs away the streak of blood by Bâs mouth, saying nothing as they examine it. After a brief pause, Bâs heart skips a nervous beat as A looks them dead in the eyes. Their voice quiet and tense, anger barely restrained, âWho did this to you?â
Buck and Eddie mirror each other in ways people donât often see. Eddie burns with white-hot rage. And when Buck gets angry, well, itâs an ice-cold fury.
Also on Ao3
Eddie leans heavily on the door as he fumbles with his keys, trying to get hold of the right one. Eventually, after finding the right key he stumbles inside, toes off his shoes and drops his gym bag by the door calling to Carla that heâs home and apologising that heâs late. The voice that answers, however, was decidedly not Carla and heâs not sure if thatâs a good or bad thing.
âEddie? Man, where have you been? Itâs been hours since your shifted finâJesus Christ are you okay!?â Buckâs voice was loud and quiet all at the same time.
Eddie winces at the words, from the sounds of it he probably looked as bad as he felt, and he felt like absolute shit. Buck appears in front of him, hands feathering over his face briefly before moving to his side, bringing a supportive arm behind his back as he guides him to sit at the dining room table.
He frowns, wondering why Buck was even here in the first place. It didnât make any sense. The last they spoke was when they were arguing in the grocery store only a couple of days ago. Buck had made it crystal clear that he didnât care about them. Obviously he didnât care that in filing his lawsuit he had left Eddie unbalanced, teetering over the edge. Buck didnât get just how much Eddie had begun to depend on him. So why, after everything, was he here now?
Eddie slumps against the back of the chair at a loss of what to think while Buck disappears into the bathroom to get the first aid kit, moving quietly as he does so to avoid waking Chris up. He sets the kit down gently next to Eddie and then moves to the kitchen to fill a bowl with warm water.
Buck sets the bowl down on the table next to the kit and moves to stand between Eddieâs legs as he moistens a towel before beginning to lightly dab at the crusted blood next to Eddieâs eye. Buck hasnât said a word and itâs kind of scaring Eddie a little, He can be quiet but heâs never silent. Â
He wonât meet his eyes either, keeping his focus solely on what heâs doing. Eddie has always prided himself on his ability to read Buck's face, but right now, now he has no idea what Buck is thinking. The only indication he can see is a muscle tick as he clenches and unclenches his jaw.
Buck tilts Eddieâs chin up into the light to get a better look at his face and the evidence of the fight. Delicately, he wipes his thumb over a streak of blood by Eddieâs mouth but continues to say nothing as he examines it.
After a brief pause, Eddieâs heart skips a nervous beat as Buck finally looks him dead in the eye as he holds Eddieâs jaw steady. His voice is quiet and tense, anger barely restrained as he speaks, âWho did this to you?â
Eddie widens his eyes at the deathly cold expression on Buckâs face and shies away from his touch in shame and guilt, avoiding his intense gaze by staring down at the bowl of now pink water.
Unwillingly the answer comes unbidden to his lips and escapes out in a whisper, âI did.â
The anger is quickly replaced by concern as Buck crouches down while cupping Eddieâs face gently guiding him to look him in the eyes, âWhat?â Buck searches Eddieâs eyes for an answer, âWhat do you mean?â
Tears pool in his eyes as Eddie looks down at Buck, confused why all of a sudden Buck cared enough to look after him. And seeing Buckâs troubled expression, he canât bring himself to lie.
âI did this to myself.â
âEddie, I donât understand. What does that even mean?â
âIt means that Iâve been street fighting. And tonight,â Eddie gestures to his face and body, âtonight I lost. Badly.â
Buck releases his chin in surprise at Eddieâs answer, before standing up quickly and moving away from Eddie in one swift motion. Eddie flinches at the movement, taken aback at how quickly Buck goes from being concerned to furious.
âYou, WHAT!?â It's spoken in a harsh whisper, but Eddie could still hear the fury. âEddie, how could you be so stupid?â
The rage that always now seems to be simmering in the back of his mind rears its ugly head. He stands up quickly, his pain temporarily forgotten as he keeps his voice low and venomous, âHow could I be so stupid? What gives you the right to judge me? You gave that up when you filed the lawsuit.â
Buck stares him down with a glare, âSeriously? The lawsuit. Come on, itâs clearly not just about that. Youâre never this reckless.â
He runs an aggressive hand through his hair and takes a step closer to Eddie, âJesus man, you have a son. What happens to Christopher if you get arrested again? Or if you end up in the hospital from a bad fight? At any time did you stop to think about what could happen?â
Eddie doesnât have an answer. He watches as Buck starts pacing, clearly fuming before he stops and moves towards the door, lifting his jacket from the hook with his back still to Eddie.
âWhere are you going?â
Buck pauses but doesnât turn around, âHome. Clearly you donât need me here.â
âBuck wait.â Eddie moves quickly and catches Buckâs arm, stalling from going any further.
Buck whips around, snatching his arm out of Eddieâs grasp. âWhat Eddie? What could you possibly say that makes all of this okay?â
âI just⌠I donât know how to explain it.â
Buck drops his shoulders and looks at him imploringly, âJust talk to me, Eddie. Even if it is to say that youâre still mad at me.â
Eddie, once again feeling the pain in his ribs that heâd been ignoring until now, holds them gingerly as he moves to sit back down in the chair. Buck follows him and turns the chair next to him, so they could sit face to face.
Not sure where else to look, Eddie lets his gaze drift to his hands, inspecting the crusted broken skin of his knuckles as he speaks. âIâm not- Iâm not mad at you. I was never actually mad at you.â
Buck scoffs, âCouldâve fooled me.â
âI was just so angry about the situation. You used to be there all the time and then out of nowhere I wasnât allowed to talk to you? It felt like Shannon all over again, she became part of my life and then she was gone.â
Buck hums and picks up the discarded towel before gently taking Eddieâs hand in his and starts wiping away at the blood on his knuckles.
âThereâs just this rage thatâs been building inside meâŚBosko was the one to introduce me to street fighting, to give me an outlet for all this anger.  And well, now I canât seem to stop. The anger just never seems to go away.â He peers up at Buck, afraid of what he might think.
Buck pauses in his ministrations and puts the towel back on the table before sighing and taking both of Eddieâs hands in his. He looks into Eddieâs eyes without any of the anger or disappointment that Eddie was expecting.
âEddie, no more street fighting, Iâll be your outlet. From now on, we are going to the gym and you can fight to your heartâs content against me in the ring. Anytime that you feel the need to let it all out, Iâll be there.â
Eddie pulls his hands from Bucks grasp. âWhat? No Buck. Iâm not going to fight you. Youâre on blood thinners.â
Buck shakes his head and shrugs, âDoesnât matter. If you hurt me badly, then you can take me to the hospital yourself. Eds, as long as it stops you from fighting out on the street, Iâll do it.â
Eddie furrows his brow in confusion. âHowâs that going to work? Iâm not even supposed to be talking to you right now let alone us going to the gym together. You shouldnât even be here.â
âEddie, I dropped the lawsuit,â Buck says lowly, breaking eye contact.
âWhat?!â
He rubs the back of his neck, âYeah, after our fight in the supermarket I went to the lawyer and told him to drop it. You were right, I- I didnât think and I didnât know how much it was affecting you and- and Christopher.â
âYou did that for us?â
âOf course I did. I mean sure, I was mad a Bobby for not letting me back. The whole purpose of it was to get back to the team, to my family, but not at the expense of hurting you guys. What would be the point if I lost you all in the process.â
Eddie sits there for a moment, processing this new information before grabbing hold of Buckâs hands and pulling him into a hug. Itâs awkward from the way they were sitting but he didnât care at this moment, he was just glad to have Buck back here with him.
Buck tenses for a moment before melting into Eddie and wrapping his own arms around him. Heâs missed this, god heâs missed this so much.
They stay like that for longer than it's considered normal for most people, but between them it is normal and they were going to savour it.
Eventually, Buck leans back breaking the hug and Eddie is surprised to mourn the loss of his embrace, not yet understanding what his body is telling him.
Buck clears his throat, âUh, soâŚwe have a lot to catch up on and you still need to be properly cleaned up,â he chuckles, âdude, I know you said you lost badly, but have you seen your face? People are definitely going to notice.â
âWell then, you better get to work fixing me up.â Replies Eddie teasingly.
Buck gives him a look with mirth in his eyes but doesnât complain as he pulls out the betadine. And while he continues to tend to Eddieâs injures, Eddie updates him on everything that heâs missed. They end up staying at that table until the early hours of the morning, just enjoying being back in each otherâs company.

something Iâll never get tired of writing out: characters waking up post-whump. give me pain jolting them awake, injuries hurting worse than they remember, dulled senses and hazy memories and confusion because they just hurt all over and canât tell their wounds apart or even remember what happened yet, and finally they just give up and collapse back into place, trying to get what rest they can until their mind catches up and they recover enough energy to actually do something about it.
No heavy tws, only medical and bit of self deprecation.
Enjoy, and now i will disappear for three months again
I also have once again forgot how to do read more on mobile so excuse me TwT

Waking up in an unfamiliar place was a bit shocking for Cody. It seems he fainted, while on Ilai's knees. Opening his eyes, he saw a white ceiling, with equally bright also white lamps. Lowering his sight, he looked around himself. A lone blue curtain on the right, and a wall on the left. Cody was laying in a hospital bed, with tubes around him. Slightly panicked he jumped in the bed. His jaw was wired shut, immobilized completely. With pale fingers, he grabbed the curtain and pulled it back. Seeing other patients, his fear was at least a bit lowered. But that didn't mean he liked any of this.
- Ah! You woke up... That's good. - Ilai walked into the room with Max again. - The doc wouldn't tell us much, because we're not family. But since you woke up that must be a good sign.
- I mean your not dead, that's enough to be a good sign. No one knows your name though... And now you can't really tell us... - Max sighed, crossing her arms.
Cody looked around again. He only could let out a quiet 'mhm'. Eyes upon the pair, still full of fear.
- It will be okay, man. I promise. Um... Maybe u could write your name down? So at least we know how to call you. - Ilai started rummaging through his pockets looking for any pen and paper. He only found a pen though. - Okay so maybe just write it on my arm. - he held out the pen to Cody.
The boy slowly wrote his name on the punk's skin and looked up at him.
- So... Cody! - he smiled gently.
- Cody. We will remember you for sure. - Max laughed along. - You gave us quite the fright. Doc said you will probably be released soon, if you need a place to stay then just say so. Or rather just nod. - She shrugged with a smile, Cody nodding as she asked.
-Wait, Max, did you eavesdrop on the doctors? They wouldn't let Me know anything. God, you're such an ass. - Ilai couldn't help but laugh at the woman. Cody smiled lightly.
---------
Their flat wasn't very big, but it was enough for Cody. He barely knew them but he felt the best he ever did with anyone. His jaw was still wired shut to heal, but at least Cody could smile a bit.
- So, tell me, buddy, you either caaan sleep together with me in one bed~ as two bros do. Or just on my bed... Alone. I will be on the couch then. - Ilai hugged him from behind, he was much taller than him
- Don't listen to him, he will just sleep on the couch. You're the sick one here, you need rest.
- But Maaaaxiieeeee
- Worst case scenario I will sleep with him, he is my brother after all. - She sighed, with a hand on her forehead in embarrassment.
Oh. They are siblings. Cody thought they were a couple this whole time. No matter though, he didn't want Ilai to be uncomfortable. Since they got him a notepad, he wrote "We can sleep together in one bed. I don't mind", to the surprise of the siblings.
- W-well I was half-joking. But if you don't mind then it will be the most comfortable, since I have a big bed. - Ilai laughed, while his cheeks were bright pink.
Cody didn't have any clothes of his own, so right now he was wearing too-big clothes from Ilai. He sat him down on the big bed in his room. It wasn't... Big per se. But spacious. Light blue walls, a closet hidden in a wall, a big window with half-dead plants on the windowsill, a fluffy gray carpet, right next to the bed a modern-looking desk with a computer on it. Cody rarely had a chance to look at technology like that, not to mention even touching it. Seeing his interest Ilai's eyes lit up.
- Do you like it? Maybe we can play games together while you recover! I will beat you for sure though - His laugh filled the room - okay okay maaaybe I will go easy on you for a few first times.
Cody wrote on his notepad - "I never played any video games before. "
- Wait you're kidding right? No? Jesus. What were you doing in your childhood? Well, no matter, I will teach you and show you a bunch of games. We have a console in the living room too. - Ilai ruffled the boy's hair, which prompted him to squint and tense - Hey you good?
- mmhm... - Cody let his muscles relax finally. He looked up at Ilai. He wasn't going to hurt him, wasn't he?
He already entrusted his health to him and now he's living with him. He could do whatever he wanted to Cody. IF he wanted.
But he showed nothing but kindness to his worthless self. He kneeled on the floor and hugged the punk's legs. Squeezing himself tightly to them, while a confused expression painted his face.
- Cody...? - The brunette blushed lightly, slowly lowering his hand onto his head, again, the boy's eyes squeezed shut, but when the gentle touch went down to his cheeks, and brushed against his pale skin, with such tenderness...
Cody opened his eyes, finally letting himself cry. Ilai didn't know how to react, unsure how to console the boy, he sat down on the floor and put his arms around him.
- Whatever had happened... I will not let it happen again. I promise... It's okay now... You're safe.
