š Authorās Note
i really loved writing this chapterāgetting to slow things down and let emma breathe for a moment meant a lot to me š¤
Emma rose when the sun roseāusually.
But today⦠she did not.
She remained where she was, tangled in silk and warmth, eyes still closed as golden light spilled softly across the bed.
Not from exhaustion.
Not from defeat.
But from something far rarer.
Peace.
It settled around her like a second skināquiet, steady, unfamiliar in its gentleness.
The silk sheets clung loosely to her legs, warmed not only by the sunlight filtering through half-drawn curtains, but by the lingering presence that had only just left them.
For onceā
There were no whispers outside her door. No tension coiled in the corridors. No expectations pressing sharp and suffocating at her spine.
Only warmth.
Only breath.
Only himāstill felt, even in absence.
Maekar had risen before dawn.
She had stirred when he movedānot fully waking, not enough to speakābut enough to feel it.
The brush of his hand against her shoulder.
Grounding. Steady.
Not a farewell.
Never that.
Something quieter.
A promise without words.
He had departed already.
A village near Summerhall, he had said the night before.
Duty.
Always duty.
But not distance.
Never distance.
Emma exhaled slowly into the pillow, letting the stillness stretch just a moment longer.
Just a breath more.
Just a heartbeat more of something that did not demand, did not takeā
But simply was.
The transition from quiet to reality came gently.
A soft knock.
The faint clink of porcelain.
The door opening just enough for a tray to be left inside.
By the time Emma rose, wrapping a loose robe around herself, the world had begun againābut not harshly.
Not like before.
The morning tray waited by the window.
And atop itā
A letter.
Folded neatly.
Sealed imperfectly.
Too much wax.
Slightly smudged.
Emma smiled before she even opened it.
She already knew.
Dearest Emma,
Elinor says I must write neatly but I think she is being dramatic because I am writing neatly.
We are well. Or at least we are safe, which I think matters more. Elinor says to tell you that she misses you terribly and that she has taken over your place in the gardens (poorly, according to her, but I think she is doing fine).
She also says you must not worry, which I think means you absolutely are worrying.
We heard stories. About the trial. About everything after. They are saying your name with respect now. Even the ones who used to whisper.
I like that better.
Elinor says to tell you that you were always brave, even when no one said it.
I say that if anyone tries to hurt you again, they will regret it (Elinor says I am not allowed to threaten people in letters, so pretend I did not write that).
Please write back soon.
We love you. Always.
ā Edmund (and Elinor, who is correcting my spelling as I write this)
Emma pressed the letter briefly to her chest.
Her eyes closed.
And for a momentā
The world narrowed again.
But not to fear.
Not to tension.
To them.
To something steady.
To something worth protecting.
I will keep you safe.
The promise she had made no longer felt like desperation.
For the first timeā
It felt possible.
She had not expected him back so soon.
The door opened quietly.
No announcement.
No guard.
No formality.
Just presence.
Emma did not turn immediately, still seated by the window, letter in her hands.
āI thought you had left,ā she murmured, voice still soft with sleep and lingering warmth.
āI did.ā
The reply came far closer than it should have.
Her breath caughtājust slightlyāas the mattress dipped behind her.
Maekar.
His hand found her waist without hesitation.
Steady.
Certain.
Drawing her back against him with quiet inevitability.
āI returned.ā
āFor duty?ā she asked, though the answer was already thereābetween them, in the way he held her.
A pause.
His breath brushed her shoulder.
āFor you.ā
The words settled low.
Heavy.
Undeniable.
Emma turned slowly, deliberately, meeting his gaze.
There was no court here.
No expectation.
No watching eyes.
Only the truth.
Her fingers traced the line of his jaw, grounding herself in something real.
āYou are supposed to be gone,ā she said softly.
āI am supposed to be many things.ā
His hand slid along her spine, firm and anchoringāpossessive, but never confining.
āToday,ā he added, quieter still, āI chose otherwise.ā
The space between them dissolved.
Not rushed.
Not desperate.
But inevitable.
His mouth found hers with restrained intensityācontrol held too tightly for too long, finally loosening.
Emma exhaled into the kiss, her hands finding his shoulders, pulling him closerānot from need.
From choice.
From certainty.
From something that had long since passed the point of denial.
And for a momentā
Nothing else existed.
A sharp knock broke the moment.
Thenā
Without waitingā
The door opened.
āEmmaāā
Rhaeās voice stopped abruptly.
Daella, just behind her, froze.
Silence.
Absolute, stunned silence.
Emma blinked.
Maekar did not move.
āā¦Oh,ā Rhae said slowly.
Daella turned bright red. āWe canāleave. We should leave.ā
āYes,ā Rhae agreed immediately. āWe are leaving.ā
They did not.
They lingered exactly one second too long before turning sharply and exiting.
The door shut.
Silence returned.
Emma buried her face briefly in Maekarās shoulder.
āā¦We will never hear the end of that.ā
āNo,ā Maekar said, entirely unbothered.
If anythingā
There was the faintest hint of amusement in his voice.
Laterāfar more composed, at least outwardlyā
Emma sat in the gardens of Summerhall, sunlight filtering through carefully tended greenery.
A small tray rested between her and a visiting noble familyādistant kin, drawn now not by obligation, but curiosity.
They had come to see her.
To measure her.
To understand what she had become.
The shift in their behavior was unmistakable.
Less dismissal.
More caution.
More respect.
A young childāno older than fiveābroke through all of it instantly.
āAre you the lady who made a prince lose?ā he asked, loudly and without hesitation.
Emma blinked.
Across the garden, Maekar went very still.
The boyās mother looked horrified. āMy lordāmy ladyāI am so sorryāā
Emma laughed.
Soft.
Genuine.
āIt was not quite so simple as that,ā she said gently.
The boy frowned. āBut you won.ā
Emma considered that.
Then smiled.
āNo,ā she said. āWe did.ā
The child accepted this immediately, satisfied, before running off.
Emma looked upā
And caught Maekar watching her.
Not sharp.
Not guarded.
Something quieter.
Something proud.
And when the boy disappeared into laughter and sunlight, Maekar stepped just slightly closer to her.
Not touching.
But near enough to be felt.
A silent promise.
The final letter arrived at dusk.
Heavier.
Sealed in deep crimson wax.
The sigil unmistakable.
This timeā
Emma did not smile.
She did not open it immediately.
The weight of it sat in her hands.
And Maekar stood across from her, watching.
Waiting.
When she finally broke the seal, the parchment inside was precise. Measured. Deliberate.
Lady Emma Ashford,
Word of recent events has reached us in full.
Your conduct during the Trial of Seven has not gone unnoticed. Nor has the⦠complexity of circumstances surrounding your household.
You have shown composure where others faltered, and strength where it was required.
We would see you.
The Crown extends an invitationā
You may present yourself at Kingās Landing at a time of your choosing, that we might better understand the woman whose name now carries such weight within the realm.
You may come alone.
Or not.
The decision rests with you.
ā By the order of the King and Queen
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Significant.
Dangerous.
Emma lowered the letter slowly.
āThey want to see me.ā
āThey want to assess you,ā Maekar corrected.
She looked up.
āAnd?ā
His expression did not shiftā
But something deeper moved beneath it.
āAnd I will not have you walk into that alone.ā
The words were quiet.
But absolute.
Emma studied him.
Measured him.
Trusted him.
Thenā
Very softlyā
āThen we go together.ā
Not a question.
A decision.
Maekar inclined his head once.
Agreement.
