GUIDE TO MELANCHOLIA’S CAGE
LOCATIONS P1: Summerhall
QUICK INFO: Maekar Targaryen is the prince of Summerhall and was gifted this castle as his personal seat (whereas it’s usually used as a summer vacation-type location). It’s significantly more intimate than Redkeep, as it lacks visiting nobility (other than handmaidens and the like) and is more comfortable than Dragonstone, given its open atmosphere.
LOCATED:
Dornish Marches / Stormlands are very isolated and surrounded by lakes, forests, and rivers. Neighboring towns are too far to be frequent.
Prince Maekar’s royal residence was a never-ending maze, sprawling across rolling green hills and made up of tall towers, open archways, and windows as wide as the walls. Just like the castles from the intricate fairy-tale illustrations in those storybooks she watched the princesses read, Summerhall was guarded by a massive forest rather than swords.

INTERIOR:
“Warm light poured into every room, every so often tinted by the colorful stained glass artwork. The library itself was three stories tall, and she nearly broke her neck trying to peek in as they walked by.”
— Melancholia’s Cage Chapter 2 “The Smell of Summer and Stone”
EXTERIOR:
"A beautifully manicured courtyard, full of statues and water fountains, sat at the center, and the lush garden beyond led to a magnificent godswood."

my very personal headcanon for the maekarlings is: The main Targaryen line by dany's time is descended from egg. So in a without robert's rebellion au (or lets just say robert loses), lets say thats rhaegar, rhaenys, aegon, jon, viserys and dany. And with extention of egg's daughter rhaelle's line we have robert (with or without depending on au), stannis, renly, shireen.
and the tarth line descends from daella (wiggles eyebrows) so thats brienne and her father.
the hightowers from rhae, so thats leyton, baelor, gerold, malora, alerie, leyla, alysanne, lynesse and much more. And by extention of alerie, willas, garlan, loras and margaery.
and then we have from aerion, maegor. maegor who i headcanon married the princess of dorne henceforth making doran, oberyn, elia, arianne, quentyn, trystane, sarella, tyene, loreza, elia jr, dorea, obara, obella (WHY does oberyn have so many children) nymeria and in addition rhaenys and aegon. (eggs worst nighmare, having his bloodline mix with aerions)
and at last daeron, from him we have vaella. i headcanon vaella married back into house dayne. so by canon time we have arthur, ashara, ashara stark baby, edric, allyria and for funsies gerold.
everyone of these people are in a family reunion, arguing targ style. in the centre we have maester aemon, smiling softly at the chaos around him, his siblings are all still here with him.
the reunion was in fact his 100th birthday that king rhaegar hosted for him in a reconstructed summerhall.

One thing about Maekar and Summerhall is that in the books and novellas Summerhall is described as a castle built originally for King Daeron as a "second residence" to Queen Maryah, near to Dorne.
But later it became Maekar's family residence. I think this is not casual and probably was a strategic move for King Daeron part.
Because he had two warrior princes: his heir and his fourth son; and I think that annexation of Dorne to the Seven Kingdoms was so difficult on the ground that he didn't only married Baelor with Jenna Dondarrion and Maekar with Dianna Dayne. He sent Maekar to Summerhall in order to take care of the Dorne frontiers.
Half the architectural choices you made for Summerhall wouldn't even go together if it was actually designed
That’s because I’m not an architect; I’ve just gone by what I imagined. It’s also fan fiction – lots of love
CRAZY SHOWER THOUGHT:
The witches prophecy when she told Aegon that "He'd be king someday, and die in a hot fire, and all will rejoice in his dying" what if later down the line, Egg belived the rejoicing wasn't from him being a bad king, but rather the fire bringing dragons back.
All will rejoice because in your death, there will be dragons again! Which is why, SPOILER, he lights Summerhall on fire with him and the dragon eggs inside! It's the prophecy! Or what he believed the Witch meant. But I think it was actually referring to the rejoicing of Rhagaer being born during the tragedy.
Perhaps I'm crazy though...
