 * in the dark of night  my town evokes scents , in the shadows of streetlights & beyond is the midnight air of your town  mingled with the heady aroma of romance, or does terror-fueled fear reign, fading only under the glare of dawn’s early light?

do chilled blossoms & cut grass permeate, as does the morning’s dew;

or does despair & deadened dreams, wet newsprint & ashy bottoms suffuse?

does the pavement, wet from driving rains share a rubber-slicked scent, with plastic trash tossed about; or reek of cobbled muck & mud, mashed refuse pastiches of the once-precious pastoral?

could one catch a whiff, capture scents of centuries-old customs culled from boiling soups & spiced stew cooked in earthen pots?

this & more i need know before setting foot on your town’s hallowed ground;

i’m instantly transported  homeward, enraptured by some scents   

others point to a hot, hollow haven, a total rejection of place & i’m incensed & offended - no defense. *
