Aelin woke up feeling different in a way that she never felt before.
Different in a way that had her hand drifting to her stomach. Glancing over to the empty side of the bed, Aelin found herself wondering.
Her and Rowan had officially starting trying for a family just a little over three years ago. And while Aelin knew that it would take a while to become pregnant, each time her cycle appeared she couldn't help but be disappointed.
Rowan was far more patient than her, and would always kiss her softly and telling her that it would happen when it would happen, but he understood her disappointment.
She had to go to her primary healer before she jumped to conclusions. But she was all ready wondering how she would tell Rowan, who was three days away helping with reconstruction of a village that had been damaged by violent winds and hail. He had been gone for four days and she received a letter from him yesterday saying that he should hopefully be back by the end of the week if everything went well.
Getting out of bed, Aelin went about her morning routine, but couldn't help herself from staring at her naked body side on in full body length mirror. Her stomach didn't look different, it still looked taut and toned. She had even tried to see if she could scent anything different about her, but all that she smelled was her perfume lingering from yesterday.
Dressing slowly and throwing her hair into a lazy braid, Aelin sprayed perfume not just on herself but on her side of the bed to deter anyone with a keen sense of smell from potentially figuring out what Aelin believed.
If she was pregnant, she didn't want anyone with loose lips spreading it around the castle. Other than her healer, Magnolia, from knowing, Aelin wanted to be the one to tell Rowan first before anyone could accidentally let it slip.
So Aelin made her way to the healer's compound in the castle. Aelin lied about a sprained muscle injury in order to see Magnolia, but when the healer closed her door, Aelin told her the truth.
And when Aelin left the compound, she struggled to keep the wide smile of her face, struggled to stop the tears from falling as Magnolia confirmed what she suspected.
Aelin couldn't wait to tell Rowan. Couldn't wait for the life inside of her to be in her arms.

Rowan was returning later on in the day and Aelin could barely contain her excitement. Hoisting herself up onto her horse and turned to the guards by the doors to the castle.
âTell His Ancient Majesty to bathe before he comes to see me,â she said, a broad smile on her face. All the guards were used to her taunting of Rowan and would repeat her order word for word. Rowan always grumbled about it, but that didn't stop her.
âOf course, enjoy your weekend away, Your Majesty.â Nodding, Aelin joined the small party that she had gathered to set up the royal tent and its contents, with baskets of snacks tied to one of the horses.
Aelin decided on privacy for when she told Rowan, to have this weekend away with him. She wouldn't be too far from the castle, barely an hour away but far away enough for her desired privacy. She and Rowan had a spot in the forest that they liked to visit from time to time, full of wild flowers and by a lake that they enjoyed swimming in.
It was the perfect place to tell him. No one figured out that she was carrying their child, for which she was glad, although Fenrys did give her a look the other day that had her tensing and ready to deny the truth of what lived inside her.
It just turned out that he was giving her a headache with how heavily she sprayed her perfume that morning, which had Aelin telling him that he would benefit from wearing some cologne himself. Fenrys simply rolled his eyes and yammered on about something that, truthfully, Aelin didn't pay attention to, just glad that Fenrys didn't out her secret. She knew that he wouldn't have said anything to anyone, but again, she wanted Rowan to be the first to truly know.
When the setting up was done, Aelin laid down on the big picnic blanket and read her book and almost dropped the book on her face when she heard Rowan's hawk call. Standing, she watched him fly and willed her heart to calm.
Rowan shifted and landed gracefully, a warm smile on his lips, as he started to say, â'His Ancient Majesty'?â
Aelin opened her mouth to respond when Rowan went still, his pine green eyes taking her in, landing on her stomach. He was in front of her quickly, taking her face in his warm hands, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.
âAelin,â he breathed, âare you?â
The answering smile she gave him was the most beautiful Rowan had ever seen as she nodded, tears filling her eyes. âI'm pregnant, Rowan.â
Rowan's joyful laugh was music to her ears and he kissed her lovingly over and over, peppering her face with kisses as Aelin finally let her tears fall from her eyes. Rowan pulled back and Aelin wiped his tears away, kissing him and wrapping her arms around his waist. Rowan pulled her in tightly, his face buried in her neck, breathing in her scentâthat was now mingling with something new and indescribable.
After long minutes, Rowan pulled back and dropped to his knees before her. Aelin tugged up her tunic as Rowan rolled down her pants until her lower stomach was exposed before him.
Fresh tears filled her eyes as Rowan kissed her stomach, his thumbs tracing circles onto her skin. He kissed the entire expanse of her stomach.
âI can't wait to meet you,â he said. Aelin leaned over and kissed his forehead. She indicated towards the picnic blanket and they made their over towards it. Rowan laid down beside her, one arm behind her head and the other on her stomach.
He kissed her cheek. âSay it again.â
âI'm pregnant.â
âAgain.â
Her cheeks hurt from smiling so widely, but she didn't care. âI'm pregnant.â Rowan kissed her lips and moved down until he was again face to face with her stomach. âWhat do you think we'll have?â Aelin had found herself wondering the last few days; ultimately, she didn't care as long as they were healthy.
âA girl,â Rowan said without hesitation. âWith your hair and my eyes.â
âYou're very confident in that assessment,â Aelin mused.
Rowan gave her a private smile that made her curious. âI am.â
She wanted to press him on that, but as she looked at him, and she found herself saying, because she could trust Rowan with everything she was: âI'm a little scared. I don't know the first thing about being a mother, about raising a child.â
Rowan moved back to his original spot and took her face in his hands again, his gaze open and full of love. âNeither do I, but we'll figure it out together, Fireheart.â
Aelin nodded, her throat thick. âI love you, Rowan. To whatever end.â
âAs I love you; to whatever end.â
Aelin wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him with everything she felt for him. She let one arm drop from his neck and laced their fingers together on her stomach, excited to start this new journey with him.
