Various locations on the waterfront were names “Logical Point _____” in support of this bid, where New Orleans was promoted as the most logical trade point for the newly opened Panama Canal. What would an Asian-theme exhibition be without jewellery? After all the wealthy loved gold, precious stones and silver and it has resulted in beautifully hand made crafted jewellery from the last two centuries. There's a fabulous selection on display at the @acm_sg exhibition "Port Cities: Multicultural Emporiums of Asia, 1500 –1900". . I learnt of the fabled "Tiffany of the East", jewellers and watchmaker to the wealthy, the Dutch company of VAN ARCKEN & Co, BATAVIA & SOERABAYA (1861-1958) that stood for a century. They produced these beautiful brooches; that actually vibrate as I was looking at it; in the style of "En pampille" - it refers to a style in which a series of gems, typically diamonds, are arranged as a cascade. The gems descend in size and terminate in a very small "icicle-shaped" pendant. Found on brooches and earrings of the nineteenth century. . The Coromandel Coaat, India, has a long storied history, not least that in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was the scene of rivalries among European powers for control of the India trade. Everyone was there - English, Dutch, Portugese, French Danish......
