In anatomical terms, how can we explain a cat chasing its tail? The neural activity in a cat's tail is primarily controlled by the spinal cord and consists of reflexive actions segmented by the spinal segments. It is essentially a form of non-conditioned reflex. Therefore, at times, the cat's tail movements may appear disconnected from its behavior, colloquially described as "not catching up." Additionally, as the furthest extension of the spine, the cat's tail has abundant nerve endings in the vicinity of the tail vertebrae. Hence, despite their seemingly separate nature, the tail is an integral and inseparable part of the cat's body.
So, what exactly triggers the fascinating behavior of a cat chasing its tail? It can be attributed to two factors: normal psychological factors and interests, as well as pathological factors that require the attention of cat owners.
Different cat breeds have varying numbers of bones in their tails, with most cats having between 14 to 28 caudal vertebrae. The cat's tail not only allows for temperature perception but also senses changes in airflow. Furthermore, the cat's tail is remarkably adept at capturing "vibrational signals."
In humans, the coccyx, or tailbone, is the most distal part of the vertebral column and represents a vestigial triangular structure formed by the fusion of three to four rudimentary coccygeal vertebrae during the evolutionary process.
