Summary: While running away from Genesis after stealing Loveless, Mithra and Sephiroth find themselves alone. It’s the perfect opportunity for some confessing...
(A/N: this was heavily inspired by a work by XXXXBECCAXXXX over on DeviantArt. Check it out here if you’d like: https://www.deviantart.com/xxxxbeccaxxxx/art/For-Sephiroth-Lovers-2011-252316128
It was a typical day of business here at Shinra’s headquarters. I had just finished training with Angeal, Zack’s session was in a half hour, and Cloud was on a mission with some Thirds in the outskirts of Midgar. Zack would’ve went back to his apartment to freshen up after such a tedious session, but I still had pent up energy from the simulation room. I desired some mischief at the moment, but not simply in the form of pranking a recruit. No, I decided to pull one of my favorite stunts: stealing Genesis’ beloved copy of Loveless.
I made my way to the 1st Class lounge where I found my target slumped on a couch. His prized possession sat on his lap as he scrolled on his phone. I crouched and silently made my way towards him; thankfully, his back was towards me. He was so busy looking at his phone, that he did not notice me as I reached over the back of the couch and snatched his book.
“Yoink!” I exclaimed. Startled from his trance, Genesis whipped his head around to see me waving Loveless in my hands behind him. An amused smirk appeared on his face.
“Hello, Mithra,” he replied, and he tried to gently take his book back, but I moved so that I was out of his reach from his spot on the couch. I giggled as I twirled Loveless in my hands.
“Hey Gen-Gen,” I said innocently. “You sure seem to read this book a lot. It would be a shame if something bad happened to it...”
This alarmed him, and his eyes went wide. He got up so that he was standing in front of the couch, facing me entirely.
“Mithra, give me Loveless,” he warned. Unfortunately, in the meantime I had slowly walked backwards towards the door, with his book tucked securely under my arm.
“You know, Genesis, I wonder if you’ll be able to read Loveless... after I flush it down the toilet.” As I finished speaking those words, I turned my back and began sprinting away from him and down the hallway. I could hear him shouting at me.
“Mithra, give me my book back now!”
It did not take long for him to begin chasing after me. Luckily, I was much faster and more agile than him. I easily turned several corners in an attempt to lose him. I checked back to see if he was still following me. He looked absolutely enraged, his face red and his expression making me imagine steam leaking from his ears.
I chuckled to myself and sped towards the elevators at the end of the hallway. By then, Genesis had slowed down to catch his breath. His delay was just enough for me to run into an open elevator and press a bunch of buttons. I grinned as I saw him leaning against the walls panting, and the elevator doors closed.
As I waited for the lift to stop, I flipped through Loveless, once again wondering what made it so appealing. He’d practically drilled it into my head, and as much as I wanted to forget it, he’d just recite it again, and the cycle would continue. To myself and the others, it was just another book of poetry. Yet somehow, Genesis thought it was gold.
The lift stopped, and I ran out as soon as the doors opened. By now, Genesis would definitely be looking for me. It wasn’t long before I spotted Angeal and Sephiroth standing in the middle of the corridor having a casual conversation.
“Sephy!” I exclaimed happily as I jumped on him, as his back was facing me. My arms loosely wrapped around his neck and I laid my chin on his shoulder.
“Mithra,” he replied, smirking as he turned his head so that his green eyes made slight contact with mine. I made sure to glance at him and then avert my eyes towards Angeal before I could start blushing.
“Hey Angeal!” I hopped off of Sephiroth and went over to the tall, black-haired First to hug him. That was my way of greeting my close friends, hugging them. The habit stuck because Zack used to hug me whenever I felt discouraged during SOLDIER training.
“What about me?” Sephiroth questioned, holding his arms out. I smiled shyly before wrapping my arms around his waist as he pulled me in for a hug. I was hopeful that he couldn’t feel my heart beating rapidly and the millions of butterflies in my stomach. I pulled away from him and looked down the hall to make sure that Genesis wasn’t around. Angeal noticed my actions, and he followed my gaze, his eyebrows raising.
“What are you looking at?” The hallway was pretty much empty apart from the three of us.
“I’m making sure Genesis isn’t coming,” I said, Loveless still tucked under my arm.
“What did you do?” Sephiroth asked, his beautiful eyes rolling.
“I stole Loveless again, and this time I told him I was gonna flush it down the toilet,” I said guiltily, further attempting to hide the book behind myself.
“Mithra! You know that Genesis hates that!” Angeal said sternly. I looked up at him and gave him the same puppy-eyed look that Zack had on a regular basis.
“Sorry Angeal,” I muttered, and Angeal chuckled at me before mussing my hair and giving me a proud smile. I grinned back at him knowing that he was secretly satisfied with my mischief. He then checked his phone clock and sighed.
“I better be going now. I have to go and train the puppy. Hopefully he doesn’t give me any trouble,” he said. “I’ll see you guys later.” He then walked back towards the elevator I came from earlier.
“Bye Angeal!” I waved to him as he left. Now, Sephiroth and I were alone, and this was much more awkward. I looked back at him, and his eyes were fixated on me. His voice came out more casually than his stare.
“So, how mad was Genesis this time?” His smirk never left his face and his eyes were still locked onto me. I brushed it off at first.
“Oh, he was livid. His face was all red and there was steam practically leaking from his ears!” I replied gleefully. I peered down the hall once again on instinct. Sephiroth stepped towards me.
“You know, I was talking to Zack last week. We just so happened to be talking about you,” he said, his expression never faltering.
“Y-You were?” I asked, becoming more nervous as he continued to stare at me intensely.
“Yes, he let me in on a very peculiar topic.” He was still inching closer to me, making my face flush. My eyes widened, fearing that my secret had been blown.
“He said that you have a crush on me.” I clenched my eyes shut when he said that and made a mental note to kill the puppy later.
“Oh...” I quickly bowed my head and stared at the floor in the hopes that my hair would hide any indication of embarrassment. I had no idea how I would get out of the situation with my dignity intact. My eyes widened once again as I felt Sephiroth’s hand slip under my chin and move my head up to look at him. I avoided eye contact by focusing my attention onto his chest, which didn’t help very much.
“So, is it true? Do you have feelings for me?” he asked, and I could detect the slightest hint of anxiousness in his voice.
There was no point in hiding it. I clenched my eyes shut and nodded, fully expecting to feel the most humiliated I’ve ever felt. Sephiroth had taken to caressing my cheek with his other hand. He gave me a small smile, and I quickly glanced into his eyes to meet his gaze.
“Good.”
“What d-” I was cut off as I felt him crash his lips against mine, his hands eagerly yet gently cupping my cheeks. His lips were incredibly soft, and I could not help but kiss him back, our lips moving together in a synchronous rhythm. I quickly tucked Loveless into my belt and wrapped my arms around his neck, tangling my fingers in his long silver hair. After a few moments, I pulled away to breathe, and he lightly pecked my nose. I couldn’t hide the wide grin that spread across my face. His smirk had returned as well.
“I’ve always wanted to do that,” he chuckled. He kissed my forehead and leaned his head against mine, hands still cupped around my face.
“I love you, Mithra Valkyris,” he said, making my heart nearly leap out of my chest.
“I love you too, Sephy,” I replied, my smile never faltering. He responded by pressing his lips to mine again and wrapping his arms around my small form. I leaned into his hug, taking in everything that had just happened. Because of the significant height difference between us, I had to stand on my toes and he was crouching slightly. I laid my head on his exposed chest, listening to the steady thump of his heartbeat. I never would’ve believed that he reciprocated my romantic feelings. Now, he was mine. There was still the issue of dealing with Zack, but I’m sure Sephiroth would be more than willing to help me with that.
I was so lost in Sephiroth’s arms that I almost failed to hear the sound of heavy footsteps storming down the corridor towards us. I peeked over his shoulder to see a very red-faced Genesis coming towards me. He did not seem to realize that Sephiroth was still hugging me.
“Mithra, give me my book back now!” He shouted. Sephiroth pulled away from me and turned to face his friend. Now was my chance.
“I’ll see you later Seph, I’ve got a book to burn. Love you!” I quickly kissed his cheek in full view of Genesis, and the redhead seemed to stop for a moment in surprise before continuing his mission to get his book back. With impressive speed, I had bolted away from the two of them, much to Genesis’ annoyance. Wonderful, I had killed two birds with one stone.
Don’t worry, I gave Genesis his dear book back eventually. I’m assuming that Loveless is the closest thing he has to a partner now. I also could’ve sworn that I heard Sephiroth whisper something under his breath, maybe along the lines of “That’s my girl,” as I ran for my life.

“They won’t have any trouble,” the magus had said sadly, not knowing how strongly my father had desired me to become a soldier and not a thief.
I don’t know why my brain does what it does, but something about the rhythm and construction of the last portion of that quote makes me brain read it in the exact same wistful, melancholy intonation as
“For who could ever learn to love a beast?” from the intro to Beauty and the Beast (the Disney cartoon, not this new nonsense.)
And I don’t think this line was supposed to be sad, but every single time, it makes me so glum. I think about Gen and the Minister and the fights they had over his future. About Gen’s refusal to kill. About the Minister’s pride and grief and fear. About their relationship. About Gen’s innate talent for so many things. About the path he chose and the journey it led him on.
