The next chapter of Worthy of Love and Loyalty is coming along well! Here's a little something to wet the appetite!
"It really was just the questions, p'Kim. They made no sense. That professor is always such an ass," Chay mutters irritably and Kim can't help but smile. The younger man curses so infrequently that it's a delight whenever he gets to hear it. He's sure that makes him a bad person.
"I'm sure you did fine, angel," Kim mumbles back. The nickname is new and Kim feels a flutter in his chest everytime he's allowed to use it.
"If you say so," Chay says but there is an unusual note in his voice, Kim would know. He's dedicated too much of his time deciphering what every minute variation could mean.
The line is silent for long enough that Kim glances over at the console on his dashboard to ensure that the call hasn't dropped.
"Can you keep a secret, p'Kim?" Chay asks and that note is still there, like Chay is suddenly distracted.
'Better than you think,' Kim thinks darkly. But what he actually says is "Of course!"
"My brother called yesterday, the one that's been out of town?" Chay replies and Kim's heart skips a beat in his chest. No one has heard from Porsche since the exchange and Kim would know. His brother is getting more and more insufferable the longer they go without an update.
"You only have the one brother, Chay," Kim replies with a lightness he does not feel.
Chay laughs nervously but continues. "Right, well he called and said some things had happened at his workplace and that he was worried I may not be safe? To be honest he wasn't making a whole lot of sense but anyway he said someone would be coming to get me tomorrow so I could stay with him for a little bit, and maybe I'm just freaked out by how worried he sounded but I'm pretty sure this van has circled our block at least 3 times,"
Kim's blood freezes in his veins even while his body reacts automatically. He twists his steering wheel to the right, hard, cutting off the guy in the turn lane next to him.
