âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Thomas never asks you how youâre doing. He never asks if youâre feeling better, or if youâve gotten over your boyfriends. Thomas doesnât bother to ask because he knows the answers already. Your brother knows that everything is exactly how it was the day you arrived at his door even though itâs been two weeks.
Unfortunately, Thomas isnât the only person around you, and your other friends start to notice your sudden absence from the boysâ lives.
âY/N, you canât just ignore the problemâ Peggy leans forward, her distinctive yellow top making her stand out among her sisters. âAll five of you are miserable. John said that he tried to visit you at work the other day because you arenât answering any of their calls, but Washington says that youâve been working remotely from Jeffersonâs apartment!â
You let out a soft sigh, glancing at the other two Schuyler sisters to see if either of them are on your side, no such luck. âAlex works at the same place I do, John works at the marine aquarium only a block north, and both Hercules and Lafayette work only two blocks south of the office. Why the hell would I go to work when all four of my exâs are in the vicinity? I still love them, Pegs! And I thought they loved me, or were at least close to it! If I talk to them Iâll break down and Iâd rather not do that while Iâm at workâ
Eliza lets out a soft sigh, one of her small hands reaching out to rest on yours, âOf course they love you. Alex has always been one to say stupid stuff without thinking, you know that. Heâs kind of an asshole, he was even like that in high-school when I dated him for a little while, and he hasnât changed in all these years.â
The oldest Schuyler sister nods along with Eliza, âWhen Alexanderâs angry heâll say whatever will hurt the most. Heâs awful about confronting his feelings, so instead he hurts everyone around him. Alex thinks that if he pushes everyone he loves away it means he is less likely to get hurt.â
Letting out a soft breath, you nod and take another sip of your tea, âYeah, I guess youâre right. It still sucks. I just donât know if I can have my position in our relationship used as a weapon like that, it makes me question the past 10 months of my life with them. What if Alex isnât the only one who regrets me being a part of the relationship?â
âThey donât! I promise that none of them do! Y/N, listen to me, Lafayette has been inconsolable ever since you left, Hercules has been angry, giving both John and Alex the cold shoulder, John has been beating himself up, and Alex is either working himself into an early grave or trying to find a way to contact you.â Peggyâs eyes bore into yours, âYou need to talk to them. Itâs not good for any of you to leave things like this, even if you guys decide to end things permanently at least everything will be out in the open.â
âI guess youâre right. I canât exactly avoid work forever either, I donât think Georgeâll survive much longer without me there. Iâve already gotten a bunch of emails from him about clients, and having to deal with Jefferson, and even him asking where the coffee isâ You pull out your phone, âYou think itâs too chicken to just text Laf to set up a meeting?â
Angelica raises her eyebrow, âYouâre going to text Lafayette, the man who has been inconsolable ever since you left the way you did? The least that man deserves is a phone call. He and Herc didnât do anything and youâve been ignoring them, the only ones who you should be mad as are Alex and John, not Lafayette and Herculesâ
âI hate to say this, but Angelicaâs rightâ Elizaâs eyes flick away from yours, âLaf loves so deeply and he hurts so much when someone he loves is in pain, and now everyone that he loves is in pain and thereâs no way for him to fix it because youâre avoiding all of them.â
âI know, I didnât realize how much I was hurting all of them. When I get back to Tommyâs Iâll call one of them, Iâll set up a meeting and ⊠and weâll figure everything out.â
All three of the girls nod and flash bright smiles, âGood, youâll have to let us know how it goes. All of you are still our friends and even if you guys split youâre still our friend.â
âI know, and I will. Weâll have a girls-night and Iâll tell you everything that happens, okay?â
âSounds like a planâ Angelica finishes her coffee, âWell, weâre going to head out so you can get back to Thomasâ. You have a phone call to make.â
Staring down at your phone you try to decide who it would be best to reach out to. Alexander is out of the question, if he was angry before heâll be furious now and would probably refuse to meet with you on principle. John was probably the same, he and Alex almost always agreed with each other so if Alex refused to meet with you John would too. Especially if they had made up. Lafayette had always acted as the mediator between everyone, heâs the one who makes sure everyone gets along, but Eliza said that Laf wasnât taking the separation well, so he might be too emotional. That left Hercules, he was always willing to listen and he hadnât even been present for the fight, it seemed like he was the best choice.
The phone only rings three times before itâs picked up, âY/Nâ Herculesâ deep voice breathes down the phone, âAre you alright? How have you been? We havenât heard from you in weeks, sweetheart! Weâve been so worried!â
You let out a breathless chuckle, not expecting concern to be the first thing out of his mouth, âIâm alright, Herc, a little sick but the flu was going around the office before I started working from home, so Iâm not worried. I-Iâve been staying with Tommy, weâve been taking care of each other. Iâm sorry that Iâve been avoiding everyone, I needed some time to digest everything that was said.â
âI know, sweetie, you donât even know how pissed I was what I found out what happened. You donât deserve to be treated like that, and Alex always seems to say things when heâs mad that hurt the people heâs closest to.â
âI knowâ You take a steadying breath, âIâd like to meet with everyone. I donât want things to end the way they did. If Alexander meant what he said and really doesnât want me in the relationship anymore Iâll respect that, but we need to talk about this. I was wondering if I could come to the apartment âŠâ
âYes!â If Hercules was standing in front of you he would have wrapped you in a hug, you can tell by the sound of his voice, âIâm so glad you want to talk things out, God, Iâve been so nervous that you wouldnât ever want to talk to us again. Iâll set up a date for everyone, make sure that they know weâll be talking everything out and then Iâll text you, okay?â
âThat sounds good, Herc. Thank youâ The two of you lapse into a brief moment of silence before you stare speaking again, âHow is everyone? How are you doing?â
âItâs been tough without you here, sweetheart, Iâll admit it. Alex is working more than ever, Washington says that he is almost constantly hovering around your desk, waiting for you to go back. Johnâs quiet ⊠he doesnât seem depressed, but heâs not his usually happy self, he hasnât touched his art supplies since you left. And Laf, well ⊠Laf cries a lot. He hasnât taken you being gone very well, and heâs been cold towards both Alex and John. Heâs upset that you havenât come back, but at the same time he doesnât want to reach out, he wants to give you time.â Hercules lets out a soft sigh, âIâm doing alright. Iâm trying to keep everyone together and be the shoulders that everyone can lean onâ
You run trembling fingers through your hair, âIâm so sorry, Herc. I didnât mean to make everything such a mess. Weâll make it better, I promise. Even if Iâm not your girlfriend anymore Iâd like to stay your friend, no matter what weâll be there for each other, okay?â
âOkay, Y/N. You had better remember that when you come over, you were my friend first, so you have to stay my friend if the others want to end things romantically.â Herc lets out an empty chuckle, âWeâll just have to seeâ
âEverything will be fine, Herc, youâll see. Youâll see.â
Hercules texts you the next day to tell you when the meet-up will be. Apparently, everyone will be at the apartment this coming Friday, and they all agreed that they canât leave things the way they are. Even Alex agreed to be civil and try to listen to all sides of the story.
âTommy, Iâm not gonna home for dinner tonight, why donât you go out with James? I know you havenât been going out because of meâ
Your brother lifts his head up from the couch pillows to stare at you, âWhere are you going? Youâve barely left the house since ⊠that nightâ
âIâm actually going to meet with the guys. I talked with Hercules, and the two of us set up a meeting. We decided that it wasnât good to leave things as they were, and even if they donât want me to be part of the relationship anymore we need to clear the airâ
Thomas groans and sits up, his dark eyes meeting your own, âDo you want me to come with you?â
You reach out and pat his hand, âNo, this is something between the five of us and I want to keep it that wayâ
âFine, but you tell Hamilton that if he hurts you anymore Iâll kick his ass. And donât give me that look, itâs my job to protect you as your big brother. Weâve been protecting each other out whole lives, and I wonât let them hurt you anymoreâ Thomasâ hands clench into fists, âWe arenât children anymore, Y/N, we arenât forced into silence by our parents, forced to take the beatings and beratingâs. Iâd do anything for you, you know?â
You quickly stand up and sit next to Thomas, pulling his taller frame into a crushing hug, âI know, Tommy, I know. Iâd do anything for you too, you know that, right?â Thomas nods against your shoulder, âGood, now, call James and go out. I know you want to visit that new club that just opened, maybe heâll go with youâ
âYeah, maybe. A night of drinking and dancing sounds good right nowâ
âGood, text me the address of the place so Iâll know where to come get you after my âmeetingâ with the guysâ
Thomas grins and presses a kiss to your forehead, âAlright, I will.â
No matter how many layers you pile on as soon as you walk out of Thomasâ apartment building the New York winter wind pierces through them all.
âWhy did I ever move up here? Itâs too damn cold for thisâ
You quickly make your way down to the subway, with as much ice thatâs on the road itâll be safer to take that than to try for a taxi. Thereâs been nothing but car accidents on the news for the past few days, it doesnât matter how much salt they put on the roads the ice seems to stay.
Lafayetteâs ringtone blares out of your pocket causing several people to glare at you, but you pay them no mind any swipe to answer, âHello?â
âMon chĂ©ri! I have missed the sound of you!â
âIâve missed your voice too Lafâ You step onto the train and quickly find a seat, âWhatâs up? Iâm on the subway so Iâll probably lose reception soonâ
âI wanted to make sure you were still coming. I have been worried that you would, how you say, stand us upâ Lafayette lets out a soft chuckle.
âI wonât, Iâm on my way now. Iâll text you when I get off at the stop near the apartment, okay? Then itâll be a fifteen-minute walk and Iâll be there.â
Several voices raise in the background, âGood, I will wait for your text then, mon chĂ©riâ
âAlright, Laf. Goodbyeâ
âJust got off the train, omw to the appt. ETA 15 minutesâ You send the message to both Thomas and Lafayette before tucking your phone away and trying to navigate the slippery sidewalk without falling.
The entire walk is blissfully uneventful until you get within sight of the apartment. A large hand grabs you by the back of your jacket and yanks you into the alley that you are passing.
âHey! What the -â The knife at your throat makes any more words freeze. The man in front of you nervously glances at the mouth of the alleyway, waiting to see if anyone heard your shout before he turns his attention back to you.
âListen lady, I donât want to hurt youâ The knife pulls away from your throat, but when you glance down you notice that the man has a gun in his other hand that that itâs aimed at your chest. âJust give me all your money and no one has to get hurtâ
You nod, âAlright, like you said, no one needs to get hurt. My walletâs in my coat pocket, Iâm gonna get it, okay?â
âYeah, yeah, just hurry upâ The guys keeps his eyes on your hand as you reach into your pocket and pull out your wallet, pulling out any cash you have. âThis all you got? Shit, fine. You got some nice looking jewelry, gimme that too. And your coatâ
Nodding again you pull off your bracelets, rings, and the necklace that Lafayette had given you at your sixth month anniversary. The man snatches the jewelry from your hands, and you slide off the thick outer coat. âThere. You have everything. Can I go now?â
The man opens his mouth, his fingers tightening on the gun, âYou wonât say anything about this, lady. You look rich enough, you can replace this, and no one got hurt.â
You nod quickly, not daring to say a word. He looks like heâs about to let you go when Lafayetteâs ringtone starts blaring from your coat pocket again. Several things happen at once, the man lets out a shout, drops the coat on the ground, and his finger squeezes on the trigger.
It takes several seconds for you to feel the pain of the bullet entering your abdomen. âShit! Shit, I didnât mean to shoot you! I didnât mean to, I swear!â
Quickly pressing a hand to the gushing wound you slowly slide down the alley wall, âW-w âŠâ
âItâs your fault! Your phone startled me! I wasnât gonna hurt you!â The man shoves the money and jewelry into his pockets before he throws the coat back over top of you, hiding you from view. âDamn you, lady, no was supposed to get hurt!â With one last scornful look the man sprints to the mouth of the alleyway and is gone, leaving you alone and injured in the filth.
