Opis: "Każdego nowego kosmitę z innym nosem i czołem w obecnych seriach star trekowych zawdzięczamy Discovery", mówiła Tawny Newsome, aktorka podkładająca głos Beckett Mariner z animacji Lower Decks. I to właśnie od Discovery wszystko się ponownie zaczęło. Za sprawą tego tytułu dostaliśmy w 2023 roku trzy seriale aktorskie i dwie animacje. Daje to nam pięć nowych serii star trekowych – a zapowiedziane są kolejne! Co takiego wniosły te produkcje? Dlaczego warto dać im szansę? Jaki rodzaj nostalgii możemy poznać w każdym z nich?

Opis: Czy wokeness zniszczyło Star Treka, czy było w nim od zawsze? Co to właściwie znaczy, że serial jest woke? Kto i w jaki sposób może opowiadać historie grup wykluczonych? Czego Data, Dax i Quark uczą nas o podejściu do transpłciowości w XXIV wieku? Czego o postrzeganiu queerowości uczy nas Mirror Universe? I najważniejsze - czy Federacja to tak wyczekiwany przez wielu Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism? Na te i inne pytania postaramy się odpowiedzieć w ramach tej prelekcji!   Name: polcon smerle

Polcon is a piece of jargon used for police collusion and smerle is a breed of fancy pigeon

Polcon is ALSO one of the most extensive datasets about level of political structure conducive to reliable policy implementation, which is fun and I think goes really well with the whole civil servant thing, so I might implement a bit of that in the theme here. 

And Smerles are fun because they’re like… fast, fancy show pigeons. And the idea of her being Just For Show in some regards is fascinating wrt the Polcon Connection, so there’s a fun theme we’ll explore.

  Age: 8 sweeps (around 17 years)

  Strife specibus: she switches between tazerkind and batonkind

  Fetch modus: I have a few ideas but haven’t decided yet

How about Police Lock? Where there’s a REALLY powerful lock on the door and the only time she can get an item out is when it’s Directly Relevant to her Work?

  Blood colour: topaz

  Symbol + meaning: the columba constellation

Wait is the whole pigeon/dove thing a homing pigeon joke–

  discord: its-just-justice

  Quirk: a bunch of bird puns and adds 2 to the start of her sentences. I think it’s also good to mention she has an incredibly strong boston accent

Make sure to research Boston slang and try to keep any phonetic spelling of the accent to a minimum! But I love that, ties in the pigeon and cop theme well.

  Lusus: a large german shepherd-dove cross with fly-like eyes

Wh… why the flies? Is it a fly-on-the-wall joke?

  Personality: you can’t tell if she’s on hard drugs of just really hyped up on coffee. She speaks really fast and loudly and moves around a shit ton. She’s the type of person who seems really friendly but gives off some creepy unsettling vibes you can’t explain. She works as chief police (god knows how she got that position) and is big on bringing “justice”. Except her version of justice is getting her matesprit to murder anyone who does something she doesn’t like. She’s also completely clueless as to the fact she makes almost everyone uncomfortable. She barely understands personal space and thinks her position is the reason everyone does as she says, but it’s really the fact she’s in quadrants with a bunch of highbloods.

I think if you want to push the uncomfortable cop theme, you have to make her care a lot about the laws and rules and respect. Enforcer of the hemospectrum, bootlicker of the upper class. You have to make her the kind of person who’ll eavesdrop and then turn you in, so people really have to tread lightly and be very cautious around her. She could also not be all that uhh reliable when it comes to making changes beneficial to the people around her. Like, she could make promises and then not really make a habit of following through. 

  Interests: she collects swords and knives. She also has a small interest in hairdressing due to cutting her own hair. She is also an avid bird-watcher.

Maybe she can use birds to relay messages, too! 

  Title: another case of haven’t decided yet

Prince of Hope, maybe? Someone who actively destroys options. She severely limits what people are able to do, making them feel uncomfortable and getting rid of optimism. The inverse is Sylph of Rage, which means she’s passively creating negative emotions, inspiring fear. 

It kind of indulges the worst parts of her personality, but if she wants to learn to Destroy Through Hope that could be a good pushing motivation for her to change. 

  Land: land of Crime and Stations

Land of Crime and Suppression, how about? There’s a police state on her planet, and she can decide whether she wants to work with the law to maintain order or help achieve True Justice. 

  Dream planet: Derse

I think she’s honestly more prospitan? She needs a set of rules, she’s not pushing for any real change, and she’s pretty honest about her true self. 

Design: 

Hair/glasses: I poofed her hair up just a little and adjusted outlines around the horns? I liked the overall shape, but there were a few awkward tangents that I had to take care of. I also decided to keep the sunglasses around, but adjusted the color to be a bit lighter so I could have them pushed up without them getting lost in the hair. 

Face: I edited the eyes back to pure black because she’s a little on the young side? And also she just looked better with the pure black. I gave her undereye bags and also added a little shading on the teeth. 

Outfit/belt/symbol: Since she’s a cop and presumably a hemospectrum stan, I figured she would want to rep her blood family highly. So I put a darker topaz-adjacent color on her cop uniform, complete with pockets and belt with walkie-talkie and pouch. I outlined her shoes. And then her symbol is placed on a police badge on the front of her uniform!

Three days (we missed one) of full day contact with our dearest friends, lectures (some rather fine, some lousy), excitement, surprises, shopping, some mehendi, award ceremony, drinking, late-night kitchen discussions about everything and nothing, and all this culminated with my husband checking at 9:50 the programme and asking “So, your lecture is on the agenda after all?”

MY HEART SKIPPED A BLOODY BEAT.

No, nobody informed me that the lecture had been accepted, so I had about 2 hours to finalise the presentation and I feel I failed the people who came to listen, because I was so angry I wasn’t very coherent and the slideshow didn’t have as many examples as I would wish to have.

Which meant I didn’t manage to attend any other interesting lecture on that day, because I was too shaky at first and too angry at myself later.
